2 years?!?!

He wants the Big Dog money but knows he won’t be getting that yet. Smart move.

Hopefully it’s just $$$ related and not because he’s still a chance to piss of back to WA.

The positive is we’ll probably see Timmy hit beast mode within the next 2 seasons to bump up his next contract as much as possible.

I don't think it's money related, it would definitely be a flexibility situation. His partner is obviously in WA at the moment but the reality is that they might not know where their futures lie. Their priorities in 2 years time could be a lot different to where they sit now.

No need to worry. By the time English's 2 year extension is up, he'll have developed to combine the best elements of Dempsey, Purser, Wynd, Darcy and Hudson, and will be an unstoppable force. I'm not sure what the record for most AAs is, but he will be the most decorated Bulldogs player in history, our first dual Brownlow medallist, the first ruckman since Madden to win the Norm Smith, but due to Bevo still coaching, also the first 200+ cm player to play in separate flag sides as both a ruckman and a wingman. In years to come, there will be statues outside VUWO alongside EJ of Bevo, Bont and English.
There will also be a sequel to The Big Chill movie featuring Tim as Jeff Goldblum's son, and a spin off series, both set in Australia.

This is a consequence of the AFLPA demanding a free agency policy that was heavily slanted in the favour of the players.

I cant think of too many emerging players who dont take advantage of this and sign a 2 year contract before being eligible for FA.

We'll see it with Naughton, we'll see it with Smith, we'll se it with Dale and we'll see it with any potential long term players.

Thats the landscape the game lives in.
I don’t actually mind the short term deal with English. Either we’ll be in the thick of a premiership tilt in which case he’ll likely want to extend or we’ll be looking to reset the list and we’ll likely get good draft compensation.

Looking at Collingwood’s issues with Moore and Grundy I am not too concerned.

I agree, but the difference between Grundy and English is that Grundy was almost 26 when he signed a 7 year deal, while English is 24, and only a 5 year deal was touted as being on the table. Moore's 6 year deal also signed as a 26yo. Anyway, we seem to manage our deals better than the Pies anyway, hopefully one day they may pay for Darcy Moore to play for us too!

Don’t like bashing Ryan Gardiner because the kid has improved greatly, but I could never understand the reasoning for giving him games ahead of Young who showed from his first game he had ability.
Gardner is a better player than Young, and was last year too, especially for the role we needed each of them to be playing. Might have been nice to give more consistent games down back to Young over Cordy, but it was also extremely obvious at times why we weren't giving games to Young when we were a team in hot contention for the flag.

Not sure anyone can accuse Collingwood of being great at list management at this point, given they also re-signed Treloar for six years at 900k each.

Interesting how he’ll be used by Carlton now they appear to be in contention.
Perhaps he is only playing because McGovern is injured but I look forward to seeing how he goes if he holds his place for whatever reason.

McDonald and McGovern both injured but preferred first Marchbank back in the next couple of weeks too

Dogs list was full by that time. It also was impossible for the draft as dogs needed 3 list spots and Gardner needed to be upgraded.
I clearly mean in leiu of a player on our list. Could've delisted Martin and moved him to the rookie list/not drafted McComb, traded Schache for whatever we could get/paid him out, traded West etc. There are a million ways we could've gone about it, but the point I was making was that there was a clearly identifiable gap on our list, and there were options available, and we didn't act. We're now paying the cost.

Have a guy at work that cannot believe we gave up Lewis Young based on our current situation with Key Backs... they got a bargain, we just didn't develop him!

You lose players and other teams benefit when you play players in positions with a flexibility mantra

Stubbornness and confusion reigns at the Kennel.

Bev will take the battler that has a Bev-like red hot crack over the more talented player that needs some work every time.

Young's development was a dog's breakfast from the start. From leaving him exposed against good teams too young, to then banishing him to hardly be seen again the next year when we should have been getting games into him while we sucked, to exlucding him from the side to pump games into Gardner and Cordy, to bringing him back only to use him as a human shield in the ruck, only then to drop him entirely after doing the role as well as he could in two finals wins. No wonder he bailed.

I like Gardner as a player but I hate his lack of mongrel. He almost seems “too nice”. His efforts against Port were very soft and we never see any frustration in him when he loses a one on one.

I think Gardner has really improved the last two years, but I suspect Young will be clearly ahead within a season or two of consistent games.

I'd probably rather Young to Cordy in any of the roles Cordy has played this year. it's bizarre how Cordy has plateaued or even slightly regressed since 2017/18 when he was 20/21.
