Ryan Gardner is a far superior player to Lewis Young. He even has a better (lower) contested 1-on-1 loss percentage than Young, which is supposedly a weakness of his.

Imagine what he could possibly do with a solid defensive structure where he’s not in a shocking spot to defend (5m in front of opponent or in no man’s land) (same as Keath)

Putting aside the ability to back up the ruck and any question marks over Bruce, Lobb is a point of difference for the forward line. Naughton, Bruce & JUH are all sub 200cm. He poses a different threat and there’s a potential knock on effect to which defenders the other forwards get. E.g McKay or De Koning may have to go to him, instead of having a size advantage on Naughton, with a smaller defender going to Naughton.

Do you think Matt Spangler could set up a forward line with 4 talls?

How is this going to work?

Sam Darcy.

We already have this type of player.

Darcy is 19 and so far isn’t as good a forward at VFL level as Lobb is at AFL level.

I don’t think they’ll all be fit or selected for all 22 games so it’s probably a moot point. But Melbourne made Brown, McDonald, Jackson/Gawn and Fritsch work, as have Brisbane with Daniher, Hipwood, McStay & McInerney/Fort. JUH may just have to keep running laps until he can be at least as defensively competent as other mediumish forwards like Fritsch or Georgiades, for a couple of years, or until Bruce doesn’t warrant a spot.

If Lobb does come in, I reckon Brucey may be the one forced out our best 22. With Lobb playing very deep, his structural importance becomes less of a factor.

Arguably he's a better player than Lobb, but Lobb's capacity to fill in as a 2nd Ruck is presumably the attraction.

Naughton, Jamarra and English/Lobb as a starting tall forward unit, with Bruce and Schache as depth and Darcy in development looks pretty healthy

When it comes to Dunkley and his value, I can't get a particular shot at goal by him last year. He was about 30 out directly in front and kicked it out on the full. Elite players don't do that.
Dangerfield, Fyfe, Petracca, etc have all had those kicks from memory

If we get Lobb, I see thats how it goes too, unless Bruce next year in the pre season game shows his ready to be back at his best. Having Naughton, Juh and either English or Lobb down there as the third with Garcia, west and Weightman would be awesome, and to have that happen while Darcy develops with Bruce by his side in the 2nds would be great too.

I think all 4 could work if we’re happy to reduce English’s ruck minutes a bit and utilise him around the ground (behind the ball to help out defence, hell even a wing or a roaming on baller at times) and increase Lobbs minutes in the ruck (he spent a lot of time in the ruck last night from the limited time I watched IMO, wasn’t too bad against Gawn)

We don’t seem interested in doing that though so if Lobb was only to be rucking 10-15% I wouldn’t want 4 talls.

Maybe we’d be more interested in doing that if we had a good back up in Lobb? But we wouldn’t even do it with Sweet whose a better ruckman than Lobb, so not sure why that would change.

It’s something we should consider, would be a big benefit having Timmy sit back in the hole a bit more often than we currently do

I dont see why we are going after Lobb. Opportunistic, we wouldnt want to pay very much. I guess there are just zero decent key defenders available? If we get him, we play try to turn Shack into a defender permanently, rather than throwing him around, surely?
We need a replacement for Martin and Bevo seems to like rucks who are good around the ground. That and Lobb is available and seems willing to come. A lot of people seem to forget that recruiting established players is not as easy for us as it is for bigger clubs. Bevo also doesn't seem keen on Sweet.

So our ruck division next year appears it will be English, Lobb, Sweet with Darcy set to replace Sweet at some point.

Or delist Schache? He just has no consistency to his game. Cordy is our depth

Jones, Darcy & Keath is a good trio round 1 next year. Jones will release Keath to be much more effective and Darcy slotting in alongside two experienced big bodies would be brilliant as early as next year IMO. Gardner first back up.

I’d love a big name but if there’s no one available and ready to come I’m comfortable with that.

Build our defence around Darcy in defence. Bloke would be an absolute super star and a multi AA there. If he goes forward after Lobb in 3-4 years all good but right now - he is as good as it gets for young talented key defenders in the league

Agree. Schache is done imho.
I do feel for the bloke this year.

Trains all pre-season in defence and then plays round 1 on a wing against Ed Langdon. Gets back in playing forward but is dropped after 2 goals against Adelaide. Comes back as a forward/ruck and is ok before COVID, but loses his spot to Bruce who is delivering much less. Then last week in the VFL he was literally starting on-ball in the centre square while Sweet and Martin took the ruck. No wonder he didn’t have big numbers.
