Yes, so taking on Bowes contract to gain pick 7 is worthwhile IMO vs trading him to someone else for a pick in the 40s. Then send Bowes to Freo lol.
They're getting rid of 7 and Bowes to create cap space why would they then bring in Hunter who takes up the cap space right away?

Nah man the game has gone past hard running, intelligent players with great hands who get plenty of the ball.

There is no stat for intelligent players and hard to measure but Hunter has very good game sense and in a side that needs intelligent players I would not be too hasty in getting rid of him.

Sure he has his issues but he is not the first and won't be the last.

Hopefully whatever the future is for him he sorts himself out and I hope that is at the Kennel

I’m assuming if we’re considering throwing out Hunter he’s broken promises and rules etc to such an extent they would look toothless if they didn’t get rid of him.

I’m sure he’s still very fit, but his several long absences (mostly unexplained in public) probably follow intolerable behaviour.

It’s sad, and I hoped it was behind him, but given the momentum it’s getting I doubt he’ll be with us next year. Just hope we get something out of it.

Suns need cap room for 2024 so if Hunter contract ends in 2023 it would make sense
Since Bowes ends in 2024

Putting aside whatever off-field issues Hunter has had, he was regarded well enough by the playing group, and ratified by the coaching panel at the time, to be made vice-captain. Obviously has leadership qualities, and has been evident in the past with his on-field directions and positioning. If he clicks at another club, even with his slow looping kicks, they will benefit from an experienced premiership player and BnF winner who is also a smart on-field operator.

I'm resigned to his departure, and sounds like it is better for all concerned. It's ultimately sad, and an indictment on current leadership within the club and of Hunter himself, that he/they couldn't get himself back on track.

I wonder if his link to the McVeighs (first cousins) will facilitate a move to Sydney or GWS to get out of the Melbourne AFL bubble as others have done in the past? He'd be fairly anonymous up there - as long as he avoids parked cars.

Some snippets from his Wikipedia page (we often, myself included, forget some of his achievements in the rush to write him off):

I dont think its a failing on behalf of himself or the club that he seemingly finds himself on the outer. I Just think its a case of the limitations in his game catching up on him. For all of his smarts, defensive running, experience and achievements. His limitations with the ball in hand, his propensity to stop whenever he is in receipt and his inability to lay an effective tackle of mark over his head are just too glaring to ignore in a game where offensive wingman are coming back into vogue. It may seem a little counter intuitive that we would let our best wingman go, but I think its the correct decision to move the side forward.

Gaining an experienced proven player who maybe just needs a fresh start for a side who struggles to keep talent, never made the finals, on the cusp of finals, not much experience, u would think could possibly appeal to them.

They don't want another player with poor off-field issues it's what set them back initially when they had the types of Hunt and Bennell

Cal Twomey just reported that we won’t be getting Adam Tomlinson

Id rather Bowes over a 700k Lobb any day off the week.

As nice as it would be to kill 2 birds one stone with Hunter for Bowes, as has been stated not really logical with their salary dump. But then again this clubs logic is give pick 7 away so easy while chasing pick 5 off Adelaide.

Bowes is on 850k next year.. that’s a huge contract. Clubs with a ton of cap space will be onto Bowes. Can’t see us being involved with our stars.

Bowes is 850k Lobb is 500k

I do agree with that... however I'm saying that I'd rather use any Hunter cash to take on that contract and pass on Lobb.

Lobb is on much less coin and will genuinely be handy for our other fwds.

It’s also the impact on current players. If I’m Macrae, Naughton etc getting paid less than Bowes, I’d be a tad filthy.

There is no world in which Lobb will earn $700k a year with us on average. If you believe the Freo fans his contract was heavily front loaded anyway, so his current deal is nowhere near $700k, But those fans also believe Lobb is staying a Docker.
