More likely we'll have teams doing a Gilbee and playing someone who can run off Lobb and eating the one or two he'll kick the other way in order to help stop Naughton.

Change in midfield coach should change forward line entries.

For a Lobb type, we need to get it in quick and high. Allows him to be one out and use his strength and size to get to the ball. You can then have fast crumbers arriving late to the contest.

The key is to have an excellent CHFs, who can mark the ball consistently and then be instructed to kick long to Lobb. Naughton & JUH could easily be the best in the league at this.

It’s really just a matter of having a focal point forward and using him.

IF the play is slowed up, then by all means look for other options but we could change tactics to a faster transition without a big change in personnel.

There are pros and cons of Lobb and it's heavily price dependent - but there is no way he allows teams to get away with not playing a body on him like has happened with Schache/JUH/Sweet/Darcy. He's no world beater but if you don't body him he will kick a lot more than two goals imo.
That's fair. But also to be fair that's why I said it was a more likely scenario than pushing Naughton down the pecking order. My point was that if I'm an opposition coach I'd be putting far more of my time into stopping Naughton than Lobb.

How longs trade period this year? Is it wishful thinking that we might actually get some action early on in the piece? Seems like there is a LOT for clubs to get through and I’m sure still more to come, and then cmon clubs might not * around and get things done early for once…. Maybe…
Lot longer than it should be, its 10 days this year. Starts this Monday than ends the following week Wednesday 7.30pm

You are playing vs Geelong who do you match up on Hawkins or Cameron? Naughton the mobile one who can move up the ground Lobb will be the one to stay deeper as the target usually the deeper defender is the teams better one i.e Weitering, May ect
Opposition teams coaches and defenders don’t and won’t lose sleep over Lobb but they will over Naughton and hopefully soon they will lose sleep over JUH also.

He is also someone who can take contested marks around the ground and long down line, it's been a while since we had a second ruck who could do that. This year when ever English wasn't on the ground we got out marked so often in between the arcs.

He will add a lot of value to us, as long we don't overpay.

Why? they did this year when he was at Freo. He is 6'9" and moves like someone a foot smaller.

Oh yeah, no way in hell teams prioritise Lobb over Naughton. Colin doing what he does best: talking shit.

Naughton worries defenders lobb does not and never will.

Lobb can play a role and if he comes will help but can’t see him worrying defenders like Naughton does.

Lobb will benefit more from Naughton been there than the other way round

They'll both benifit from each other. Lobb isn't surrounded by duds like he has all year and Naughton will get more 1 on 1s as he isn't getting Sweet/Schache/Cordys defender on him all the time too. Naughton obviously worries them more but if you think defenders aren't worried about a bloke that can reach the ball at 3m in the air you're kidding yourself

I wouldn't say he's talking shit Hawkins and McKay are their respective teams "focal" point as they're the one they dump it long too when under pressure however Cameron and Curnow are the ones the teams prioritise defensively

I think you are missing the point here. Nobody is claiming that Lobb will be a better forward than Naughton, nor that coaches will be more worried about Lobb than Naughton. Lobb's inclusion will mean that Naughton and JUH will play different roles - roles that will be harder for coaches to negate with Lobb in the team. If Lobb plays out of the goalsquare and opponents play a third tall against him, Lobb will kick some bags while Naughton and JUH are roaming the forward half at will. Lobb makes us better without him needing to be the best or even second best forward - it's about the role he plays - that's where we derive value from him.

Yes defenders are worried about a bloke that can reach the ball at 3m in the air BUT THEY WILL NOT PUT THEIR NUMBER ONE DEFENDER ON HIM WHEN NAUGHTON IS AROUND REFERRING TO YOUR "Lobb will take the #1 defender which gives more opportunity to Naughton"

I agree with what you are saying but the trail of replies refers to Lobb taking the oppositions Number 1 defender therefore Naughton getting someone else.

I wish that would happen but I don't see it.

Lobb will help but he will not take the oppositions Number 1 defender IMO.

Their number one defender will have to get used to playing at CHF and up on the wings...that's where Naughton will be with Lobb in the team. The number 1 defender will go to the most suitable matchup,...not to the opposition team's best forward. It's not 1990's footy anymore. The game no longer sees the best defender on the best forward every game.

Rayner looked fantastic in the finals series and looks like he’s slowly starting to live up to the pick 1 status.

He is an absolute yes for me if he wants to come back to Melbourne. Him, Baz, Naughty, JUH and Darcy. Our future will look great.
I thought he was pretty damn quiet in the 2 finals he played but you watch him against the Saints in round 22 and that performance alone is a huge yes.

Brisbane-bound midfielder Josh Dunkley says he is confident Chris Fagan will be his coach at the Lions next year as he denied a culture issue was at play in his second trade request in two years.
Dunkley will move to Brisbane if the Lions can broker a trade with the Western Bulldogs, but says after 18 goals in his outstanding 2022 season he is prepared to play mid-forward in an onball unit that includes Lachie Neale and Hugh McCluggage.

The Herald Sun revealed last week Dunkley would sign a six-year deal worth $750,000 per year, and Dunkley said he had genuinely been unsure about his decision until last Monday when he officially asked for a trade.

He told the Herald Sun at the TAB Spring Racing launch that while Fagan could not go into details about the accusations from First Nations players about conduct in his time at Hawthorn, Dunkley believes will would coach the Lions next year.

“It was a tough decision and something I had to think about a lot,” he said of his trade request.

“Weighing up my life here (in Melbourne) and in Adelaide with my partner Tippah and my life in Brisbane as well. So at the end of the day I feel like it’s a good lifestyle decision and they have an exciting list up there.

“Fages was really good. He is really disappointed and everyone knows that. It’s been on the public record that he has been struggling with it, but he’s a great person and we didn’t talk too much about it. He just wanted to reassure me that he feels like he hasn’t done too much wrong and with the situation that is going on, it’s hard to talk about.

“It definitely didn’t make me second guess. Everyone has backed him in and all the news reports have backed him in, and from what I have had to do with him in such little time he’s such a good human being and he’s really cared for me, and I am looking forward to that relationship and getting up and meeting him.”

Treloar’s great mate Adam Treloar’s partner Kim Ravaillion is in Brisbane playing Super Netball, and he is likely to join her once his AFL career is finished.

It means that while it will be difficult for Dunkley to leave his best friend, they will be reunited in Queensland in coming years, with the 25-year-old adamant the decision was based around lifestyle.

His partner Tippah plays Super Netball with Adelaide and while all contracts in the league are up at the end of next year, she loves the exciting young side she is playing with.

But in the long-term they will settle in Queensland, with 2016 premiership player Dunkley describing it as an offer too good to refuse.

Dunkley asked for a trade to Essendon at the end of 2020 amid the turbulent finish to the club’s hub experience in Queensland, but is adamant the Dogs culture is sound.

It is no secret the ultra-professional Dunkley led the charge on that front at the Dogs, but he said his relationship with coach Luke Beveridge was good.

“I think that was never an issue. It was more for me the on-field stuff and my role and the lifestyle. I feel like I can improve my footy again in the team up there. The culture stuff never came into my decision making.

“The culture is really good at the (Bulldogs) footy club. The boys are really close

“This year has been the best year out of all of them. It was a good step in the right direction after the grand final, so there is no bad blood.

“Bevo was really good to speak to on the phone. We have had a great relationship from day one and before I was drafted he spoke to me about how much I can be a role model and leader, so Bevo has been great for me and he’s like a father figure.

“I said to Bevo it was more of a lifestyle choice. He backed it in and said he completely understands the long-term deal was appealing.”

Teams will always put more time into Naughton and he will be more of a threat closer to goals.

Yes having Lobb will mean the opposition needs to consider match ups for him and others in our forward line but Naughton will be at front of mind for opposition coaches and they will sort his match up first then JUH then Lobb's in my opinion.

Kicked more goals than Naughton in the final. IMO he needed to stay particularly if we are losing Dunkley and Hunter
Macrae-to-Hunter was a constant for a few years, they were a perfect clearance team. The chemistry has somehow been lost.

How to say a lot without saying anything at all. $$$.
