It's been a build-up DD. Tried to give the benefit of the doubt for years but am struggling.

Will always cheer and see some reason to be positive. Naughton, Marra, Darcy and Smith is an amazing young core to build from. Need some class on the wings, some good young mids and a developing key defender next. I also live in hope that Bont and Macrae can play until their mid 30s.

But don't quite and never will get how we ballsed up a golden opportunity.

I hear you, but I also think that we're fortunate.

My Grandpa was born in the 1920s, saw us win in 1954 and died 10 years ago. A flag when he was in his mid 20s and died in his early 80s before seeing another (just seven prelim losses).

In my life (I've seen us play in 17 finals series - 1992 onwards, six prelims, two grand finals and a flag).

I think back to the 70s and 80s and that would have been hell. Smashed regularly, finals out of reach and having to sell players to put money in the coffers.

We're not perfect, far from it, plenty of room for improvement, but we have a lot to be pleased about and look forward to.

I think if we picked up liam shiels to teach Cody to play that true small forward position it would be a good pick up. Cost nothing.

At 11 we need to pick-up the best in and under, defensive oriented and hard at it midfielder left in the draft pool. We have just lost our only elite midfielder with these attributes.

Libba is our next best. He turns 31 early next season and has a banged up body. I have serious concerns about our midfield. People complain about our defence, though when the pill is coming in at lightening speed through the corridor due to poor pressure ... it's no wonder we leak goals in a hurry (like in the 21 GF).

Can anyone work out how many list spots both main & rookie we currently have available, assuming both Martin & Butler get delisted & Wally gets 1 more year.

Also on Stack if he’s really interested in having another go Id sign him to Footscray and let him show us he will work for it, if he puts his head down has a good year then reassess next year - similar to Stengle & McCartin - let them earn it with a season at the lower level showing their dedicated to giving it another shot. If that’s not something he’s interested in so be it.

I’d be interested in one of Rowe or Frederick so long as we still have room for 3 picks & 1 rookie (providing it’s not Sullivan) I remember Fredericks first game off half back was great but tbf haven’t seen a lot of him since - but it is something we could still use in defence IMO with a real running mindset & a pretty nuggety guy who seems to try hard & compete defensively. I don’t think Dale & Daniel fit as they both have similar styles whereas Frederick could compliment Dales kicking with some speed and add another running option to Richards who has more of a defence first mentality.

I wonder if he’s ever been tried on the wing or more likely due to his height forward? Might suit him as finding the ball in the forward line is less of a concern so long as he’s using his speed to chase & tackle and his skills - but dunno if he’s ever been tried there. Otherwise Rowe as a specialist goalsneak could get a lot of opportunity in our forward line front & centre of the big blokes - but the lack of defensive pressure is a concern in a forward line which already struggles defensively and is now even taller.

Surely we don’t keep Martin? We have two rucks in the side (and Darcy who can help if things get desperate) plus Sweet who is the perfect, durable back up which you know what you’ll get from him. There is no use for Martin he’s just hindering development. Let’s face it there’s no point Sweet playing forward at VFL level, he will never be a second ruck but he can still develop his ruck craft to be a better first ruck back up, which is what he’ll be whilst he’s on our list.

We need to draft another ruck late/rookie to start coming through under Sweet, you should always have one of these types developing IMO as you can find gold cheap
If Butler and Martin both get delisted (and no-one else) we will have a total of 4 spots only available. The split up between Main list and rookie list depends on which current rookies are upgraded.:)

What the hell is he even trying to say? That whole interview makes no sense. "There should be a blanket rule that if you're out of contract you're free to move on" is how it already works!
He's trying to copy the NBA and NFL model where there's no distinction in being out of contract and being a free agent. It's one and the same.

Issue that Dunkley has in making this point is a) NFL contracts are a joke and even "guaranteed" contracts aren't b) NBA counterbalances this by giving benefits to teams that draft players. If Dunkley wanted this system, it would operate in a manner in that Brisbane wouldn't be able to offer a contract anywhere neat as comparable as us and he wouldn't leave anyway and c) he conveniently ignores the MLB (as do all AFL players who are "American Sports Fans") who operate a similar system with players not becoming free agents until years and years into the league.

It's just dumb to hold this view anyway. The AFL is only tangentially related to those leagues in a draft and salary cap. But those leagues have private owners making a profit and who are adversarial to the players, squeezing each other. The AFL isn't that it goes without saying.

At 11 we pick up the best player available. Our next picks we look at needs over the next 3 to 5 years and next season we really clear out further to build the list stronger utilising not only our 2 1sts but each and every pick after that including the rookie list to ensure depth and development accross the board

It's likely there will be 2 upgrades. Sweet and Khamis. So it might mean dogs draft 2 and upgrade 2. Unless Khamis can be upgraded to a cat A rookie. It's hard to tell now because the rules have changed so much in 2 years around rookies and what clubs can do.

If I was getting a mentor to to teach the art of a small forward, I'd be throwing money at Stevie J, C. Rioli or, and I couldn't stand him as a player, Milne.

If C. Rioli was interested in coaching I'd get him in our ranks asap.

So in 2016 we win the flag with the youngest team ever.
Six years later only five remain and we've done f-all in the interim.
Surely this is an indictment on the club and its leadership?

A significant review is long overdue.
We made the Grand Final in 2021, do you think we should have won every year? we have done as much in the last 6 years as we had done in our history previously.
Hard taskmaster.
