Much like Callum Mills move last year?
Yeah not a bad comparison, although Mills had much more midfield experience in juniors. I don’t think he’d move their full time, or if it would work out but just think we have nothing to lose by throwing him in there for 20% of a game and seeing what happens. The upside is high and if it doesn’t work nothing lost really.

Need to shake things up to get out of this rut

I’d be more inclined to push Dale into centre square than Ed. Need Ed’s intercept marking down back. I think Dale’s ready as he’s shown he can take body contact and keep his feet the past 18 months.
I love Dale but not sure he’s gonna help our midfield which is being bullied by bigger, stronger and quicker midfields!

Dale is not known for being a physical player. Midfield would not suit him, assuming we are talking about the center and not the wings. Personally if we have a game where we lead by 10 goals going into the last quarter. I would give Richards a crack in the middle. He will be lost a little bit with positioning for sure, due to not playing there. But I would like to see how his physicality, ball use and pace hold up both ways.

Agreed. I also think Dale’s kicking is so good from defence because he has the time and space, which he wouldn’t get in the midfield. Like how Boydy was a rushed, hack kick as a midfielder but was excellent when he moved to half-back.

If we’re out of finals contention late in the year, I’d like to give Ed a few games in the middle just to test out how he goes. I think he has the potential similar to how Laird has progressed.

Exciting youngster Arthur Jones will remain in the red, white and blue for at least the next two years, after penning a contract extension this week.

The 19-year-old from Mount Barker, WA was drafted with pick 43 in the 2021 National Draft and is a product of WAFL side Claremont.

Jones broke through for his senior debut against Brisbane in round three and has played every game since so far.

Prior to his debut, Jones bided his time with Footscray in the VFL, playing 16 matches across his first season in red, white and blue.

Bulldogs’ General Manager of List Management and Recruiting, Sam Power, said it was pleasing to lock Jones in for another two years.

“Arthur has had a taste of senior football this year and has shown some exciting qualities across the forward line with his pressure and pace,” Power said

“He has an infectious personality and loved team member that brings energy and enthusiasm to the group on and off the field.

“We look forward to Arthur running out in the red, white and blue for years to come.”

Jones has played three games in 2023, averaging six touches and two tackles per game to begin his career.

Western Bulldogs free agent Bailey Williams is happy to wait until late in the season to assess his future despite his happiness at Whitten Oval.

When players hit free agency status rivals increase their interest given the ease with which they can poach them.

The Dogs have already locked away free agents including Tom Liberatore and Ryan Gardner but as a dependable rebounding defender Williams will have interest.

A longer-term deal given his free agency status rather than a huge contract is likely to keep him at the Dogs.

Ryan Gardner was able to secure three years given his free agency status so the model is there for a similar deal for Williams.

Based on nothing more than a hunch I suspect he's off to SA next year.
Seedsman (wing / defender) has his career ended with concussion and Bailey slots straight in as a replacement.
Some talk that Bergman comes back to Vic - after losing Amon previously, they could be tempted by a free hity at a mature wing who can roll back into defence if required.

I suspect that Williams is SA bound, just depends on who offers him the better offer. Adelaide will probably offer a token trade if it's likely that we're chasing Doedee as a FA.

That would be disappointing as I'd always thought Williams would be a real asset. He was tracking that way in 2021 but has never been the same since a poor GF (although the team hasn't performed well either).

Would need to reluctantly agree though, if he's looking for a longer-term contract at decent money I think there are better ways to spend it and target someone else.

Williams is a solid player but he hasn’t delivered on his potential. Would not sell the farm to keep him.

With 4-5 (at least) of our older players to go, it will help with the turnover of the list and with Dale, Ed, Caleb and JJ all still around, would just be happy to get some draft compensation.

Might not be much, but would be great to go in with a great draft hand for the first time in a while.

I wouldn’t lose sleep if we lost Williams, but it’s far from ideal seeing as he’s young compared to the rest of our fringe players and there’s plentttttty of older deadwood that needs to go before him. Would significantly weaken our bottom 6 which we all desperately want to improve.

Why are we lamenting our lack of solid role players all throughout this board but then being OK with losing Williams? I don't quite understand. He is one of very few guys in that tier slotting in and playing his role to a consistently solid level. We need more players doing that in other areas of the ground, not less. He is clearly, unanimously best 22 and would be in our 15 best performed players this season. I'd hate to be replacing him while also trying to add more in that C-B tier.

I was going to post the same thing. I can't see why we should give up on him so readily. He's not a game changer but is pretty handy.

He's an RFA isn't he? So we can match any reasonable bid, especially as he claim he's happy at the kennel.

Let's see how his form goes for the rest of the year but should be worth keeping in my view. Prefer no more than a 3 year contract but if somebody offers 4 we might need to match. Alternatively he might settle for a 2 year contract to take him to UFA status.

Yeah pretty strange tbh, I think people are just doing the standard, from SA will go home etc

He doesn’t make sense for either SA side, and there’s zero indication he’d want to leave. He’s playing full time footy and is very ingrained in the club best mates with CD etc and no one’s going to lure him out with big money.

I’m 95% confident he stays on a 3yr deal on an average wage

I wonder what draft picks we could get for our underperforming experienced players…. It won’t help short term but longer term we can bring in more kids to attack the 2025 season.

I know it will weaken us short term but IF we are bringing in midfielders, then we need to move midfielders out of the midfield to another position or trade them. There only so many centre bounces and midfield spots available.

We could spend our draft picks on more outside midfielders but we will still be being beaten inside, so I am not sure that would be worth the picks.

I know he is likely to re-sign but would have loved to have a crack at Mason Redman

SFA - Schache and Hunter were token deals to get them to their destination. Roughy the same.

BZT hasn't re-signed yet, he's been amazing this year.
