Seems our madness has caught on.

I don't mind it, to be honest. Definitely helps attracts quality players to the VFL team which makes our VFL team more competitive. We don't want 11 plodders playing alongside our developing youngsters, do we? Besides, obviously not every pick from our VFL team has been a huge success but we've had Gardner, Scott and Poulter all be best 22 at various times, and may well be going into 2024. Rookie picks are always a huge shot in the dark, anyway.

Poulter specifically came to us because we had a mid season spot and like to promote guys from the VFL side.

So if we are taking 3 or 4 in the draft, I am assuming Scott is included in that

I don't mind Scott but would like another kid
Scott isn't taking the spot of another kid though?

Literally opens up a spot on the rookie list to draft and develop one

That's true.. forgot about that.

Hopefully take 4 including Scott at the national draft and a few rookies (not sure how many we can take)
I'd rather we start using our rookie list properly and develop Ruck/KPP/X factor players with high upside,

Use the main list spots for more known quantities

There are not enough quality players in Australia to use the rookie list properly. It is more a crap shoot now than ever before. Covid removed development time from many young players, so they are more raw and the increase in teams means less players available.

In two years the Covid effect will be gone but then we add Tassie and potentially another Perth based team…. Again diluting the pool even further.

Too many teams, too few players and it’s really really hard to tell who is going to improve enough from u18 level as rookies to become solid AFL players.

Yes it is a crap shoot sure but it's low risk high reward so why if it is low risk would you continue to go with McNeil/Scott types when you can do what we did this year with JOD?

JOD is a unicorn. A 0.001% fluke.

Yes, I would love to keep rolling the dice and I have called for this many times in the past….

But

There just isn’t the depth in talent. Even with the Talent, there are other considerations:
I live in Cairns and one of the local boys here is a freak, an absolutely devastating forward…. but he would never cope in an AFL environment. It’s hard enough to keep him from unhealthy habits, let alone get him into an environment where he would have a lot of money, time and nothing to spend it on but unhealthy habits…. it would break him. I enjoy watching him play soccer too, it’s just a shame he just can’t leave here. The leg speed and the low trajectory kicking to advantage while on the move…. wow!!!!

I would love for us to ask the AFL for another 4 rookie list spots, exclusively for our Academy kids. Those guys already in our system are the ones we should be rookie listing each year…. They are in Victoria and being more involved in the club would be awesome.

I don't agree at all that the talent isn't there,

Is it harder now to identify and develop sure they missed 2 years of football but that doesn't make their talent disappear just means they haven't reached their potential yet

It’s really hard to find the guys who are willing to put in the work. That is the key to the whole thing.

M Boyd and Picken were highly driven individuals who didn’t quit until they retired.

Identify players like that, who have potential and then rookie list them. That is going to take a lot of scouting time, to identify kids with that mindset.

It’s all in the mind. Everything in life. Control your mind and choose your direction.

Anthony Scott is like that. Roarke Smith. Very hard workers and great trainers, who become whipping boys because they don't have an exceptional talent.

They didn’t have a high enough potential. That is their only flaw…. But then when you have talent, many times you don’t put in the work.

Seems like when you do take a rookie , they identify themselves as potential AFL quality players pretty quickly. So by a pure numbers game, you should be turning them over regularly to have more chances to find the successes.

We seem to do the opposite - hold onto guys that blind freddy can see aren't up to it...for years past their use-by date.

Cant think of many instances where a player was on our rookie list for 4 years and became a regular 22. JJ maybe? there are always exceptions.

Jeremy Sharp was just delisted. That kid is a natural wingman.

Just under a goal

Strange decision.

They didn't have the list space to keep him, and I think Freo figured there was no point trading for him when the Suns would have to cut him and they could pick him up for free.

I agree it is but we seem to keep going guys in their mid to late 20s not early 20s

Scott is fine. At times last year he was one of our best wing options, at other times the only forward who could kick straight.
He's the exact type of cheap, versatile foot soldier you want on a list. I'd argue we want more guys who can play at AFL level and do the job, not fewer.

People here seem to love Buku or Benendo but Scott cops heat. I don't fully understand it.

I have no issue with Scott as a player at all and prefer him on the mainlist as he is solid depth my point is more rookie list spots we should be going for the 20-23 year olds who had for whatever reason had issues in their draft year but are playing well at state league level not 26 year olds like Scott or McComb who are just role players

I'm convinced people who have a problem with Scott being on the list have simply confused him with McNeil.
