Looking at our midfield and our lack of a defensive midfielder/tagger/run with player. Do you think Harmes can fill this role? Biggest question is will Bev play someone in this role?

Unless he plays this role I can’t see him getting a game in our current midfield rotation.

Wouldn't make much sense. A while back McLean was used as a tagger and absolutely killed it. Not just keeping his opponents quiet, but also racking up possessions.
If they really wanted a tagger, they already have one.
We also had the best tagger in the game when bev took over (Picken) and he got a change of role.

Not keen on Harmes to be honest but one thing he does have which a fair few of our boys dont is mongrel

People overrate our list so much

Scott and Vandermeer were walk up starts to get 10 touches and do **** all. We rolled out either Baker or Poulter on the wing each week. McNeil doing God knows what out there. Harmes is a giant upgrade on all of them if he doesn't cost anything in a trade

Interest in Harmes confirmed, who called that again? Man we’ve been getting some good info this year.

I dunno what to think about this, can’t stand him cos he’s a Melbourne flog and can’t say I know a huge amount about him but he’s got a bit of toe a bit of campaigner and could play a defensive role? Makes sense I guess

Went to school with my son. Great kid, works super hard and is a bit of a joker. Was Melbourne supporter as a kid.

As an alternative to getting 4 - why not trade our 10 to Melb for their 19 and 25 (not sure of exact number.

We could then get Croft, pick 17, pick 19, 25 and two in the 30’s plus Sweet compo. Trade for Billings and Coffield with 30’s.

Would be something like Croft, Wilson/De Mattia , Tholstrop and Sullivan, Coffield and Billings and a good ruck with remaining 30 and then some roughies?
I'd be OK with this.

17 - Croft
19 - Tholstrop
25 - Collard
3? - Lual
4? - smokey?

I've cried for it for years but.. Baz...has the speed and aggression, forces him to be defensive, cant help but still rack them up and attack.

Closest we've got was a role on Cripps which he did brilliantly!

I'd be laying down the challenge to him - you want more midfield time - put your tackling and defensive boots on - run hard in defense and lock down on someone.... You'll get the time you want...

He's no better than any of these guys though.

Indeed he had a statistical worse season than ever one of the motley crew that you mention. McNeil being the obvious outlier with his average being ~ 50 worse.

Harmes looked a long way off the pace at both AFL and VFL levels this year.

If we we are going to use Scott and Vandermeer as a metric for what constitutes average.

Then Harmes' 12 disposals a game fits in as snuggly as an unlubed butt plug with our dark passage of the average.

Harmes is exactly the type we should be looking past.

Pass.

Harmes Season average stats... So for the most part, he's averaged between 17 and 24 possessions per game. 24.5 being a probable outlier season, but 17 - 21 per week typically. 0.5 goals per game, 4 tackles and all importantly - the occasional hit out !!!

I cannot believe that people haven't realised that we are targeting him as Sweet's replacement !!!

As I tend to write a lot, I’m very cautious about loading up on other clubs’ fringe players.

Coffield was not fringe before his injury so might be worth a punt. Harmes was at one point best 22. In isolation, maybe you could give him a go.

After taking Baker and Poulter for ‘23 taking both of these guys is going a bit far for my liking.

We do... Bailey Smith. He did two weeks in a row (one on Cripps and killed him).
I just cannot fathom what Harmes does in our side. If Libba misses, Macrae goes straight into the centre.

West did a reasonable job on Sicily in a defensive fwd/tagging role. Baz had a couple of games showing something as a run-with player and has the strength + speed to match most mids we could throw him on. Macrae - slower but big bodied and could attempt to use him in a more defensive role to save his career.

Harmes could probably play the role for us but really don't see the need to further muddle our midfield rotation that is already upsetting Baz and putting Macrae out of a job - or at least not at the expensive of a 'meh' caliber player. We also could have set up our midfield more defensively if we were worried about the impact of losing Dunkley on that side.

I have no idea what Melbourne want for him but it'd want to be next to nothing.
