I feel like, if we thought ourselves a really genuine chance at landing Butters next season, that we would be clamouring for some future picks from any of the players we’ve just traded
We’ll have a first and future first as a starting point if we want to make a big trade. If a big fish really wanted to join us we could make it happen. It’s the likelihood of someone like that wanting to come that I’d be concerned about.

Another reliable poster who has good sources, just posted a few posts ago that Butters is unlikely. As he is happy over there, and the club is looking to tie him down in the near year.

Two conflicting posts. Also, who a player supported growing up, is largely irrelevant. Haven't heard of any players requesting a trade to a childhood club for that reason alone.
Not saying its a done deal, but we will throw everything at him. Mail was that we pitched to him for 12 months time. Clearing a significant chunk off our wage bill certainly helps our chances.

Childhood club doesnt get the deal done but it doesn’t hurt. Just ask Nick Coffield.

A better finals series combined with stability on and off field, natural improvement out of our young stars and hopefully a port adelaide slide and he would seriously think about it.
We wont die wondering

Imagine if we get another Bont at #17, it can happen when you think of where Butters, Fyfe and others have gone. Come on Milesi, time to do your thing.
I would love nothing more than to get an absolute gun kid with pick 17 and stick it up everybody just so that we can say look who we got with the smith pick, positive vibes people.

Smith, Macrae and Daneil out.

Replaced with Kennedy and two draftees. That'd be about $1.5M/yr saving. Wonder if we have a plan for it beyond bigger contracts for Richards and Darcy.
Though it'll never be public, we'll probably renegotiate the Naughton and English deals and front-load them first and then we can always move money around and re-sign for 2026 onward once we've shifted the bulk of that money in those contracts around.

Though the melts on this board will be pretty funny if people realise that Tim English will be paid over a million dollars next yead

Yeah I think this is where the club stuffed up. We knew likely, that Smith would potentially entertain a trade the year after. We should have been on the front foot. Could have gotten two first rounders for him last year. But we didn't anticipate the ACL, which put the ball back in Geelongs court. But also, I think the system is ripe for manipulation. I bet $100 that the Cats told him to ride out his contract, as they knew they could get him for cheaper next year. To me its a form of tampering.

Club needs to make sure they are on top of contracts, and also in deep contact with those who are expiring, and see where their head and heart is at future wise. We have been shot ourselves in the foot on both the Dunkley and Smith deals. Slightly overpaid for Lobb. Thats three times we have caved in to the other teams demands at the last minute.
There is no world in which Smith could ever fetch two first rounders outside of the day after the 2021 prelim. Also he was running down his contract even pre ACL, he wasn’t requesting a trade to anybody this time last year.

It's a great outcome. We dug ourselves a hole by signing Daniel and Macrae to lengthy and lucrative contracts and then realising that they weren't part of our future plans. That was going to be a lot of our salary cap tied up in two players who were playing VFL and sub a lot of the year.

Smith wasn't worth a top ten pick as an uncontracted player but it was worth asking for one to see if we could shake anything extra than 17 loose. The Cats saw through it, good for them.

People seem to have severely inflated the value of draft picks recently. They are always hit and miss.

Smith is a proven performer, in his prime, and definitely worth our asking price. We should have held fast.

In order to gain credibility at the trade table you need to be prepared to walk away from bad deals. We don't know how to say 'no' and stick to it!

That is why we get low-balled year after year.

He would have as recently as after his BOG Round 10 2023 performance vs the Crows which came off the back of a decent enough start to that season too.

Of course, that's a season and a half ago, but his 2021-22 form is not irrelavent, just reduced, surely.

The reason Smith didn't "agree" to a trade is largely because he wanted to himself turnaround his forbad 2024 form to get more money.

In the end while he's still getting paid a million or so a year there was some discussions that Geelong would have offered him like one of these 7-9 year contracts doing the rounds and/or well over a million a year - ultimately the ACL not only made him a more risky player but he never had the chance to prove that he could turnaround his form.

Ignoring the pre-season reports before the ACL that he was apparently training well, it is curious to wonder if his output was identifical in 2024 to 2023 if we would have still gotten the same trades.

Might be some decent DFA this year?

Or are we not in the market?

I'm not sure we are in the market, although I think we'll have one spot free?

We've had five of the list, brought in one, have four draft picks. Don't think any of the rookies got upgraded. Think we're more likely of picking up someone post draft like we did with Bramble.

Is there anyone in particular you like from the DFA market?

About as good as Sam could do to clean up the mess left by Bevo and the disconnect with list management.

Smith's attitude may have opened the door to leave but Bevo made sure of it by playing him out of position prior to his knee and not managing the midfield rotations. He was stuck at half forward after tearing it up mid and on the wing. We discussed this every week in autopsy threads. The time was last year, no doubt the club knew shit was going on, everyone else did. Along with others, this time last year i posted people at Cotton On knew it would happen eventually. The time was then.

Bev changing the roles of Macrae and Daniel this year, which was fair enough. But Macrae has never been able to play other positions and this should have been obvious to Bev and communicated to Power to explore trading last year. Knowing a rough year not in his preferred position would see his value drop. Similar with Daniel, the time was then.

Now with Kennedy ear marked for that half forward mid role. Doesn't look like Bev will be changing much

I'm really not sure what people think Power should have done instead.
Happy to be enlightened.

One thing I will say is the seeds of this were sown with our less than satisfactory outcome from the 2023 trade period where we traded out a lot to get a top 10 pick and to secure Croft against rival bids. I know some people will say oh not that again but it meant that we came in this year with picks 35 and 48 (or similar).

We've just made the final payment on Croft and Sanders. Can't be changed but I wasn't happy when that trade went down last year and I'm still disappointed in it.

This year I think we did as well as could be expected. No better, no worse.
We don't have a top 10 pick and when the bids come in we might only just have a top 20 pick but I'm pleased we do have 3 picks in the first two rounds. By definition that's better than the average of all clubs.

Sam Power can now take a short break. Dom Milesi's turn to step up ... and make this work.
We need to be patient with Sanders. He could be our next captain. One thing our club does better than any other is allow our young stars to develop properly in the reserves. I trust that the development time he is having in the 2’s will stand him in good stead.

And what?

Play Macrae and Daniel as rotating subs again next year?

Smith had clearly checked out long ago. We made the best of a s*** sandwich and Smith, his manager and Geelong made it s***. The best thing we can do is avoid drafting Smith types and go through draftee's character with a fine tooth comb.
