Our ability to score so well outside of clearance/stoppages is BECAUSE of English? He does do the around the ground stuff well, and I know you love him, but that can’t be what you mean haha
Yes. Because opposition teams often expect their ruck to run with/match up with English, it's a head-to-head battle we often demolish the opposition in more than other head-to-head battles around the ground. English has a capacity to intercept and drive the ball forward and spread the field relative to the opponent that's also trying to do the same thing, more than any other head-to-head position on the ground.

And not just that, our ability to score so well from clearance wins and outside of the stoppage itself is because English remains a top ruck in the league in his capacity in all elements of the game other than the hitouts (which basically nobody continues to recognise on this board, except for me and a few others).

Last time I did the numbers was about Rd 18 and against the opposing first rucks English was +2 disposals, +3 marks, -1 clearances, +1 tackles, +5 UPs, -3 CPs and -9 hitouts.

Tim doesnt win too many loose balls at stoppages, which is where more physical/slower rucks tend to collect possessions, and that shows in the CP/UP numbers. And thats OK. +3 marks is pretty good.

Id like to see score involvements

Last year was quite unstable from a playing style and playing group perspective. We dramatically changed how we played, particularly at stoppages, but also shifted our press back, and we changed some of the players in key roles. Hopefully this year is for consolidating rather than large scale experimenting.

...we have been like this for years. Large scale experimentation until around round 12 then we scramble to make the 8 from there. The only year I can really remember us being stable at the start of the year was 2021.

2016 we blew Freo out of the water in round 1 at Marvel. I remember that vividly.

Libba’s first game back from an ACL, when he kicked an early goal you just knew it would be a domination

Large scale experimentation or just bad football?

FYI

2015 started 4-0
2016 6-2
2017 5-2
2021 9-0

What the experimentation been in the years outside the above?

I mean sure but since 2018 with 2021 excepted there's probably something to the fact that we've typically played better football as the season's gone on, and not necessarily played our best football since.

I'm a sceptic like you but it's probably true that this version of Bevo (which has different people around him and is a different coach to the 2015-17 one) seems to have either the weakness of not doing well at starts of years or the strength of doing well in the second half of years (whatever your interpretation).

Brew is in Ballarat with the team in full kit. Says a fair bit about his chances making the list

I suspect the tipping point for us taking him was his attitude following pinging his calf. He's knuckled down and didn't give up so the positive attitude is big.

We have chopped and changed structure and personnel most years early in the season. The general vibe (in my opinion) is that we don't know what the best 22 or structure is going into rd1 most years and change on the fly up until mid year.

I'd like to see way more stability at the selection table and less of the whacky experiments.

That's my main gripe with the current coach. He may not even care about making top 4 and only cares he's got the right team and structure heading into a finals campaign but early losses from own goals at selection start to add up quickly.

Given rumours of issues with another player, a super-dedicated guy who barely scrapes on the list might just make the group better.

What wacky experiments ? Please clearly explain what they were - with specific examples.

The only “wacky” experiment I can remember was putting Woody down to full forward, it only lasted two or three games.

Unfortunately, that has been the story for us in finals since 2016.

Why does it continuously happen and how can we fix it?
2021 we did ok, but ran out of legs in the last half of the game. Considering the shite we had to go through to get there after the Brisbane time keeping error saw us drop to fifth when we should have been fourth, it’s not really surprising, but I enjoyed the finals series up until then.

I feel like we gave been hamstrung by an inferior system that we had to rely on brilliant performances to overcome.

I thought our Defensive system has improved in recent times but our forward craft and entry is garbage

You forgot to put 'error' in single quotes.
