With Sam Power stating that he’s talking to a bunch of clubs trying to get into the first round with our f1, what are the chances Essendon get involved?

Geelong’s first (20) + our f1 for pick 9.

They have Kako, and he’s looking like he may be bid on before 9.

Yeah it’s probably overs. I wonder if we can get that bombers pick 9 (which will blow out to 11-12) without using Geelong’s pick.

We aren't sending him to the draft, nor do we need to. Geelong will cough up their first plus something. The draft threat is hollow. Geelong also know they courted him and have to pay something fair (not "bulldog's supporter fair") otherwise future players won't want to nominate them.

People like to say use the fact that players never get walked to the draft as evidence that the draft threat is hollow but it works both ways, if being out of contract actually made such a big difference we wouldn’t see clubs regularly playing very close to full value for out of contract players.

The threat of letting a player go to the draft is a viable negotiation tactic to hold the buying club to what he’s worth and trading back into a pick somewhere in the teens ahead of Geelongs pick only strengthens that leverage.

Yep, and it's clear that the draft threat actually works when teams are requesting trades to bottom teams on the ladder, such as Dawson to Sydney (went for only pick 18, because Adelaide could take him with pick 1 in the PSD).

The fact that Adelaide paid anything at all for Dawson for a player they could have taken just with pick 1 proves how much clubs are willing to avoid the ickiness of players being redrafted, if anything.

Good list management IMO.

We have a glaring deficiency in players named after English counties, and with Keath's likely departure, a deficiency in a player with 'x' in their names.

So Devon Robertson and Xavier O'halloran make sense.

If only there was a gun young wing in the draft called Essex, we wouldn't need the other two!

By the sounds of the trade radio, we aren't letting Daniel and Macrae go for nothing. They even suggested the pick in the 40s wouldn't do it. Might be an interesting couple of weeks.

I feel like we’re one of the few clubs who refuse to delve into any information if it’s a contracted player?
I do remember someone mentioning Bevo won’t even meet with anyone in the middle of the season.

There is nothing that he has produced at AFL level to suggest anyone offer him a 4 year deal very worrying indeed

It's the same with 2 year deals for Scott Baker ect it's our biggest issue list management wise

I expect Sam will first try and get other clubs who want our players to solve our problems. Ie he could be signalling thinks like:

- We want to be in top 15 of the draft this year. So if you want Smith take your first round and something like a F2 and get us pick 13 from the GC

- Find a way to turn Smith into Houston - we have said we are interested in him.

- Geelon On - we might consider pick 17 plus XOH - so got get him.

- Or trade SDK (not a need but a clear best 22 for a clear best 22). Some forget that a fit Smith doesn’t play VFL for us.

- If you want Macrae St’s - either get us a second rounder or a third and a player like XOH

- If you want Caleb D - get us into the second round.

Other than Houston - I think the only interest we have expressed is in Houston - so that sounds like Sam is looking for a first and another second round in the draft. In the draft thread you can see very good players up to pick 40 in this years draft - today we have one pick and will miss out - addressing this would be top of his list and he is letting everyone know what he wants and the he has a star player and two AAs as collateral.

Ooh I wouldn't mind Sharp as a young developing Wing / HBF option. Elite runner + endurance player who gives us another option at a position of need, likely a bit more future upside.
