Also what happened to the roos and they are still paying for holding on to an old list for far too long. Can't make the same mistake that they did.
Except they have now traded old guys back in again and are right back where they were when they kicked the quartet out in one year….except they are shitter than then

Haven’t followed the players in the draft this year much….but just saw an article about a kid who fooled Essendon and idolises Merrett and Bont….his name Jack Ough…..tell it’s a joke and his parents didn’t call him Jack with a surname like Ough….

Don’t care how you pronounce it….its as bad, if not worse than Callum Murray

It rhymes with plough, but yep I've been making jokes about Jack Ough since the u17s futures game last year.

Shouldn't be looking other clubs about age and such and look at the rebuild dogs did in 2011-2014. Delisted and traded everyone except the leaders in Bob, boyd Morris Wood & Roughy. North delisted all their leaders in 1 swoop and it shows how bad that went because now they're bringing back in leadership type players to repair the damage. They tried previous years with bringing in fringe players and it didn't help.

It was a bit of a happy accident we even retained those leaders. The only one McCartney rated was Roughy.

Cooney spoke about it a few weeks ago and, while it aligned a fair bit with what had been said here over the years, it was still bizarre hearing how close to total self-immolation the playing group was when he left.

We did sort of get it right though. Kept enough leadership to guide the emerging players and backed kids in in important roles.

There’s a transition happening whether we like it or not, but if you look at our run with first rounders as against North and Adelaide’s in the last 10 or so years it’s night and day. We’ve picked good players every time (hard to judge Buss and Croft but other than that all the others are at least capable).

Continue to nail the first rounders and don’t hold onto list cloggers and we’ll be ok.

On 450k a year….for the lifestyle…..it’s ****ing Geelong people not the Sunshine Coast

Apologies to all Geelong residents here but you get my point
It’s the hidden Cotton On money in Geelong that ensures they get who they want and don’t lose any players that they want to keep. Since 2016, when Cotton On came on board, they have only lost Tim Kelly and that was for a homesick wife.
These ****wit footy journos need to do their job and uncover it.

Geelong is basically an extended suburb of Melbourne these days.

Was never leaving once they won the flag and he played his part with that super important role in the prelim.

Was never happening once we realised we don’t get to have Cotton On money

Rayner would have been a great fit and nice fish to land, but I also would have shuddered at the apx 900K (at least!) we would have had to pay him to lure him over...

Goes back to the question of whether money is enough to prise a player out of a club where he is happy and there is success, with no other motivation.

Business contacts to set them up after footy, marketing opportunities for players, sponsorship dollars etc. We have good honest sponsors, but none from big corporate companies with a billion dollar annual turnover.

I would have liked to see KWW use her Disney contacts to swing a few things, maybe in conjunction with our megastar supporters from Hollywood.

We need to be smarter with things.

Example Graeme Wright to Carlton as Deputy CEO?
You really think Cook needs a deputy?
Wright will be all over the football department without his wage been in the soft cap.

The Caleb Daniel article made me chuckle a bit, nothing wrong with what is being said, but they are making it out like Bevo had him locked in a drawer all season. Nothing being said of that fact Caleb got 2 extra years on his deal in this trade, we did him a massive solid.

It is moving towards more of the high endurance types rather than just speed and agility because of the limited rotations on the bench. It is why clubs aren't too concerned about Langford running a treacle paced 20m at the combine because he covers the ground so well for long periods of time with his elite endurance.
I remember another guy who was in the bottom 10% for acceleration at draft camp. Marcus Bontompelo or something. I think he ended up being ok.

Bit of you don't have repeat speed efforts or an elite yoyo test, you need to have endurance and be big enough to win contested ball. Langford does that and if you ignore stats and rely on the eyeball I have him at the pointy end of the draft.

The headlines made out he took a swipe at the club but reading it all in context he didn’t say anything that bothered me.

Hope he plays well.

I'm not bothered by the comments, but I hope there are some coaches thinking about them and reflecting on whether they are always communicating the right message. Daniel was still best 23 for most of the season, and a best 23 player shouldn't be left feeling like they weren't trusted... let alone a club champion.

sometimes nobody loses. Not much of a news story though
