From the outside it seems that the AFLPA is dead against transfer without player approval and the AFL feels a fight with the union is not worth it. The player nominates one club and the home club is disadvantaged. With Free Agents the AFL says it has expertise is assessing the value of the player. As a minimum when a player wants to move not as a free agent the AFL should provide a similar assessment of player value and that establishes a base level of trade value at least. I would prefer the AFL requires a player to nominate more than one club but don’t see this as possible given the AFLPA

You wouldn’t need to argue that. Dunkley doesn’t qualify as a player who’s off field issues weren’t worth his on field performance.

Stringer was still contracted I think (???) but we shot ourselves in the foot by publically shopping/slagging him - I remember something like that.

With JUH, id probably ultimatum him - resign for a few years and we can work thru this together - show some fith in both directions. Otherwise we cut while the cutting is good

The picks would've netted us Nik Cox and Zach Reid and unless we traded them out again would've been useless picks regardless

Dunkley left for money and leadership opportunities, and a little bit less of not getting along with certain team mates(culture). He was always going to be behind Bont and he always wanted to captain, don’t be surprised if he ends up captain at Brisbane. Dunkley had big problems with Hunter but so did most of the group in that last year, he was genuinely off the rails and didn’t improve at Melbourne.

Smith is a different story, the club did alot to support him, but going from what I know, he was certainly disliked by certain members of the playing and leadership group and that only got worse in the last year of being on our list. Not many people at the club were upset to see the back of him, think we are more upset we got screwed in the process.

As for the rest of the “rat pack” that didnt retire, Dal, Stringer and Hunter, they weren’t wanted and were actively pushed out / shopped around.

I believe we have a really solid culture at the moment amongst all the playing group bar one member, and I also believe the club is and will continue to move hell and high water to support him over the next 18 months, but if no signs of improvement, maintaining culture will ultimately prevail and don’t be surprised if he does leave.

The ball is squarely in Jamarras court.

Smith leaving really leaves a sour taste in my mouth and I hope the clubs as well.
We supported him through the mental health battles, the party drug saga’s and the ACL / accommodating for time off club duties in season etc

To then just leave us high and dry, doesn’t sit well.

I hope I’m right but I feel as though JUH will be the opposite and actually want to repay the clubs faith and support.

Dunkley had the opposite of attitude issues. He signed a bigger contract elsewhere

I can confidently say that the Dogs won't (willingly) deal with Geelong after the Bailey Smith stuff around last year. A lot of inner sanctum people at the club still feeling burnt over that whole

It’s karma, you deal in bad faith, it comes back to you.

For all the knashing of teeth, we usually come out of these situations ok.

Go right back to Nathan Brown’s defection to Richmond, we have a bit more context, offered less money from the club etc,
broke his leg was never the same again.

Hunter, only lasted a year delisted, coincidentally when Melbourne imploded with accusations and players going off track (Trojan horse theory)
Dunkley, requested trade to Essendon, denied, went to Brisbane who happened to be top four, but they gave us two first round picks and a second?
Sniff, screwed around by Trump Mackie, one first round and a third round pick which got us Kennedy (thank god) Cooper Hynes who looks to have something. Jury out on Sniff, one game is not a season.
We need to maximise the situation with Marra, either trade him at the end of the year, or he knuckles down and recommits.

Funnily enough even future picks then became redundant as Darcy shot up rankings the next year as well

Don’t care much about Stringer (although we handled that in a very extreme way), Dahl or Hunter. The last 2 in particular we got the best out of some time before we lost them.

We cannot lose Dunkley, Smith and then JUH for the pittances we continue to get from these players selecting winning teams with crap draft picks.

You’re taking known talents that we invested a lot in, right before the peak of their powers, and trading them for hopeful draft picks that we are yet to benefit from.

When you have prime Bont you shouldn’t be in fire sale mode with young talents. Not only does it make us worse in the short term but the long term consequences will be dire.

It also signals an inability to retain talent in the face of bigger clubs - why bother at all then?

I would not trade Jamarra for pick 1 straight up. The talent is evident and you may not get a player as good as he is from that exchange. Almost impossible to do well from a trade involving Marra unless you get multiple cracks at top 5 picks in the process, and that’s still speculative.

He has issues for sure, but we aren’t really serious if we keep on doing this. It will be Sanders next.

we don’t get trade requests or free agents - our A grade talent comes from the draft. If we can’t retain them once we find them we will essentially turn into the Suns.

He is only "young talent" if he chooses to be if its this current form of him for his career he is no talented enough EF case in point

Wouldn't be the worst thing if he did go to Tassie and we got a few of those early picks. His 2nd half was a step in the right direction but
