I'd argue that defence wins premierships but that's the responsibility of 22 players not just 6.

Putting a score on the board also helps the defence.

Long story short, in our case and at this this time, Butters is the best thing that could happen to us .... imo.... and it's not even close.
If we can’t have one
I’d rather have the other
But I’d be over the moon happy with either personally

I think we need a more experienced BP
Someone in that 23-25 age range and not coming to the end of their career
Someone suggested Bergman from Port Adelaide but I think he’s more of an offensive defender than a defensive first mindset
Think we’re doing on okay on attacking play but a bit leaky with the defense
I don’t really expect us to make a major play at any defenders though, but I guess you never know
If starcevic didn't have concussion worries he'd be a great FA target

Time to part ways. Absolutely fed up with him. What a distraction this bloke is.
Trying my best to have sympathy for him but he’s really throwing it in our faces. Was happy to go to Perth with the indigenous team but can’t stay off the piss for one night to be at our 100 year game.

If you'd rather play pool in the pub than go and support your teammates in a massive game there really isn't anywhere to go.
Cut him loose ASAP.

Until Bev and Co acknowledge some of English efforts in the ruck are poor there will never be pressure on his spot

Was not long ago Sweet was going really well at VFL level and English spot was never in question we know how that ended and the script continues
I get people are frustrated with what English is serving up right now and fair enough, but I think there are some false memories about Jordan Sweet's time at the club and the selection decisions. The TLDR version is:
  • 2021: a 23 year-old Sweet was being monstered in the VFL by Rhys Stanley, Tom Campbell and Callum Sinclair
  • 2022: a 24 year-old Sweet was being meaningfully outplayed within the Footscray team by a cooked Stef Martin
  • 2023: a 25 year-old Sweet had a great VFL season, but at the same time English was the AFL All-Australian ruck
We wanted to keep Sweet around but he made the very sensible career decision to move clubs and has done well. English at the same time has struggled. I'm not pretending he was a previously a brute ruckman, but he didn't do any contact training for 2-months of the 2024 pre-season due to migraine symptoms and I don't think he's been the same since.

At the end of 2022 I was hoping we'd go for Brodie Grundy and tell English he was going back the the tall forward / 2nd ruck role he played at the start of the 2021 season, but we surely would have missed out on Lobb if we went down that path.

==//==

Detail:

2021 Season: Sweet's last month of the VFL season, as a 23 year old, against some AFL experienced rucks included:
  • Rhys Stanley: Sweet had 21 hit-outs, 7 disposals, 2 marks and 4 clearances, while Stanley had 24 hit-outs, 23 disposals, 6 marks, 9 clearances and kicked 1.2
  • Tom Campbell: Sweet had 23 hit-outs, 11 disposals, 2 marks and 2 clearances, while Campbell had 48 hit-outs, 26 disposals, 9 marks, 6 clearances and kicked 1.1
  • Callum Sinclair: Sweet had 31 hit-outs, 10 disposals, 4 marks, 2 clearances and kicked 2.1, while Callum Sinclair had 26 hit-outs, 21 disposals, 2 marks, 12 clearances and kicked 1.0
  • In fairness, he did have solid games against an inexperienced Melbourne ruck (Jack Bell) who went on to play 0 AFL games, and also against Coburg up against Nathan Mullenger-McHugh
2022 Season: He was certainly better than the prior season, but even still he was being meaningfully outplayed at VFL level by a completely cooked Steff Martin. Comments on here from VFL watchers in August 2022 (so late in the season) included:
  • "People have been crying out for 2 rucks and here it is. Martin is undoubtedly a better player than Sweet right now."
  • "Yeah I understand the development of Sweet but you can’t both call for selection integrity and also call for Sweet to play ahead of Martin."
2023 Season: Sweet had a very good VFL season and was rewarded with selection in the VFL Team of the Season. Obviously though this is the year that English really stepped up and was the All Australian ruck at AFL level. Despite Sweet's strong VFL form it was not unreasonable for English's spot to be absolutely cemented that year.

Agree with Hird (as much as he's hardly the one to be talking right v wrong).

But on Jamarra, don't care what the excuse is if you're going to the NBL and NRL you can drag your arse to our 100th birthday celebrations - a huge night for the club that pays you handsomely.

Marra’s manager might be the most overpaid person in Australian sport.

Wth is he doing?

Connors Sports Management. The same as Sniff, you say?

Funny Face Wow GIF by Tennis TV
"Hey mate maybe don't post yourself looking off your tree out at the pub with your mates when your team is playing especially after you were posting at the NRL and NBL the 2 days prior"

Where can I claim my millions in commission fees?

The Jamarra situation is insane. It’s like the Bailey Smith drama on steroids. Or coke.

There’s nothing I’d love more than for him to pull it together and get back into the side for a string of games so clubs will come to the party.

Something tells me we’ll be parting ways for not very much. A friend of mine is close with a fairly recent ex-player - his view is it’s long past the point of no return. Depressing.
