AFLW Trade, Draft and list changes 2024

I beg to differ on Alice Edmonds. I said at the time of here DELISTING, the signs were there, that she was worth getting some more games into. Her kick was neat enough at that stage, her hands just needed to start clunking marks, and that was always going to be a confidence thing for her around her young body.

Monahan played out her last season at Port, came in for the odd game. She went from match winner to unwanted in quick time. Dare I say one the hardest things to manage in the AFLW is personal relationships, and we are not just talking between players.
AFLW semi pro league, 11 week seasons, lots of 1 year contracts, maybe $70,000 for low tier player.

Swings and roundabouts. Edmonds behind players at punt road slotted in for the dogs well. Tam Luke retired from Hawks and made an OK comeback with us.
We lose Molan ~ still getting a game at EFC. Small fwd tough position, Yassirs better.

Monahan went to Brizzy and wins 2 flags.... dime a dozen small defender.
Woodward did nothing at the aints, picked up by Sydney.
Greiser good pick up from the aints ~should be kicking more goals.

Sheerin? GWS reject. Killed it.

Know Edmonds was behind most, but she did show some signs is all I'm saying, and it turned out OK for her, as it did for Bulldogs because like most of the taller players, it takes time! And just to prove it, she got All Aust Squad once at the Doggies.

Its all the moving on of players, trades and delistings that have resulted in very little gains.
Sure we can say its been a small talent pool, unfortunate personality conflicts and disgruntled players, being forced to open up a list spot and shuffle spots to get the room to bring someone of a certain type who can only play a certain role and also really confined in the effort to develop younger players.
It’s just been so slow building a list.
It’s adds to the arguement to develop players in different roles and create more versatile options.
We’ve played about 50 games as a club and we’ve gone through alotve players, if Yassir hadve walked it’d be touch and go to say we’ve had more good players leave than we’ve brought in after the startup team.
That’s no good.

not to mention the players we prelisted over gregan, who we then traded pick 18(vic pick 9) for

trigger warning for those with weak stomachs:

it's rough looking at our initial list

She might’ve been just below the top level but it was a great to read how the commitment to being a paramedic and working some nights of the week and getting to training and playing.
She was sweet kick of the footy if she had the time.

Yeah I remember reading that too and thinking I'm exhausted just reading how Hannah was trying to combine footy with night shift work. Great example of how difficult balancing work and footy was in the first few years of AFLW.

Still a long way from being able to retire off the earnings off an AFLW career but a more adequate pay structure means they don't have to blow their financial position up to play.

I betya without even looking that pic 9 has played less games than Greg’s,,,this year is the first that the draft ran deeper than first 3-4 players

Yeah but the point is that she was under our nose and we could have had her for free but our recruitment team didn’t do that and instead we had to fork over pick nine for her
Sliding doors moment. In hindsight we went with Grace Campbell as a pre-list signing over Grace Egan in the midfield. Campbell played 5 games as a Tiger, then departed for North, Greg has notched up 34 games as a Tiger to date. (Could've been 57 games).

Interestingly, the month we did the Greg trade, the player that in the recent trade period we enquired about, Georgia Gall, was drafted at Pick 72 by the Demons, and our own Jodie Hicks was also drafted at Pick 82 by GWS. Both former WBBL cricketers.

Re: List builds.

Realistically if we are 3 - 4 years behind in getting to the required list build where the Roos are at, it’s not all because of what is in our control. Consider the tinkering (read fairness) that has occurred with AFL/W run expansion program at Head Office that has so far helped or hindered club builds. North are the winners for sure.

At the first expansion there was only one Melbourne team, North, obviously a big benefit, as was being the first expansion cab of the rank. Re player movement, North could sign as many players as they wanted. Geelong, the other first expansion club, not surprisingly were not seen as a premium destination with the part time nature of the game and the low monetary rewards on offer, Tier 1 $ 24,600, Tier 2 $ 19,000 and Tier 4 just $ 13,400) so the influence of primary income in a work-sport balance decision, meant that Geelong were seen/encouraged as the inferior choice of the two clubs at the time.

North Melbourne attracted the bulk of the talent, as any other Melb. club with that inaugural expansion license would have.

In 2018, and to our club’s and Peggy O’s surprise, North and Geelong were granted licenses. Our bid, and also the Saints, missed out on expansion. Here is the reason.

North Melbourne's biggest selling point was its connection to Tasmania, with the club keen to play some of its home matches in the state (as its AFL team does). In fact, they have been running talent clinics in Tasmania over the past few years. North established a connection to VFLW club Melbourne University in 2010, and its football operations manager, Laura Kane, is also the president of Melbourne University.

North went on to poach incredible talent, at least 8 high end talent walked in the door, so compare that to our expansion where we shared a watered down version of expansion with St Kilda + 2 interstate expansion clubs. Those still remaining at North are Tahlia Randall, Jasmine Garner, Emma King, Emma Kearney & Jenna Bruton. You can then add in Ash Riddell, VFLW team of the year & captain of Melbourne Uni under Laura Kane. 11 players were poached from other clubs.

As expected there was a huge amount of griping and protesting by those clubs that North raided, and around the comments at the time around youth as replacement players for those established clubs, mainly quantity of youth, as the top quality were seen as future AFLW players, those in clubland knew however that there was not nearly enough available young talent.

So we alongside, Gold Coast, West Coast, and St Kilda as the 2nd installment of expansion had limited numbers of pre-listings, compared to unlimited, we had limited access to youth, compared to later expansion, both which has had some media at least acknowledge this by questioning the depth of talent available, as well as the rate of expansion, all this alongside the reigning in of the assistance package after the experience of the first expansion. Lucky us.

not saying who we would've picked is good, but there's no guarantee we would've taken the current pick 9

i was a big fan of gatt in that draft year (might've been the last women's one i actually watched games during the season of) and she only went a couple of picks after and played in this years grand final, and played 1 more game than greg

same with tripodi but wouldn't have taken her with that pick, although we did well enough with our later picks in that draft (would've liked her over cox)

also i just checked, the girl that got taken with the greg pick played 11, 1 less than greg, but idk how good she actually is. could've had both is all i mean

Great post.
There where grumblings about the players we took also, poor old Bulldogs they still haven’t recovered.
It’s true and I agree with what your saying, however…
Sure the parameters where shitty compared to other startups and “the timing of things” has a huge influence on opportunities but it’s also about our choices and us being locked into building around Brennan.
This may be a little controversial but in an environment where growth is slow and there isn’t a huge talent pool. The decisions about the Teir 1 players and contracts have huge ramifications and consequences.
Brennan is a very talented footballer and there’s no doubt to not go after her at the time and bring her in would have been the wrong decision and we set ourselves to build the team around her, definitely the forward half.
Shes had an interesting career at AFLW level, it’s probably only Randall who has missed more games and Randall is 6 x most courageous, 3 x premiership captain, 5 x AA.
it’s a bit odd that someone who has a strength and conditioning enterprise has had so many soft tissue injuries and also a stress fracture in her foot which are most often caused by over training.
Hard to find players comparable to KB that aren’t in the inaugural teams.
Gemma Houghton, has played four less games than KB last three seasons but kicked more goals, though Richmond have won 8 more games.
Cora Staunton
55 goals in 50 games in a struggling team. KB 63 in her last 50 games. 8 more goals though GWS lost 7 more games.
Mind you Staunton debuted at 37.
I doubt very much if those two are in the Teir 1 category.
I do think Tier 1 players should be players that dominate and are very hard to defend and if you want the big bucks you need to produce the goods.
This trade period and prior to it Taylah Harris was available, I think Harris is a ruthless competitor who can dominate and is coming into her prime years.
We signed Brennan for an extension in Aug and I think we would have known about Harris.
Is KB still being paid as a Teir 1 player? Probably, but if we missed out on Harris because she was looking for a contract that would allow her social media income to come in and instead we arranged it with Brennan, and I am speculating, I think there’s a good arguement Brennan has benefited a lot more from the relationship than the club has.
I’m disappointed we still can’t bring in that sortve level of talent.
Someone who is a ruthless competitor who wanted to be successful and win more games very well may have been pissed off about that and chose to go to a Team where she can experience more success and playing in more high level games.
Consequences.

This is spot on. It all boils down to very poor football management of our AFLW team. For too long we've let the tail wag the dog in that building.

Brennan is on a downward trend (as to be expected with her age) but has certainly delivered on her side of the bargain with us. Clearly one of our better players every year

I’d rather Brennan than all the baggage of a Harris if that’s the two we’re comparing

Agree, We could only go with who we were able to extract out of their current club at the time, KB was a big time signing and a huge win for us, so the next best thing we could do is to position ourself to target and bring in that talent in subsequent years.

On form only 2 of our players would be in the top 50 or so A graders since then playing the game up until now, being Mon Conti and KB, and If not for injury possibly Ellie Mac. It would be great to have an Alicia Eva, Brit Bonnici or an Ally Anderson on our list. Caitlin Greiser you could have considered would have been close to one of the better players in 2020/2021 before her form dropped off.

We had plenty of time before last expansion, and there are very good players that have moved clubs. Tayla Harris, Chloe Molloy, Olivia Purcell, Maddy Prespakis, Jaimee Lambert, Emily Bates, Libby Birch, Gemma Houghton, Jesse Wardlaw, Isabel Huntington, Greta Brodey, Ash Brazill and Kalinda Howarth this year, to name some. Only a couple of these players would be tier 1. Both Houghton and Harris that you mentioned have moved clubs in that time.

If you look at how have we done in that the proof is in the pudding, then we have not traded in a top 50 player. If Caitlin Greiser can return to the form she showed early in her career then that would be our only one.

Are recent arrangements around KB an impediment to us not signing A grade talent worthy of Tier 1? or something else. I’m of the opinion that surely the club would have a contingency in place to make a trade of this type happen.

Also you would think it would be highly probable that a Tier 1 would place the success of a club over their own monetary gain, and be willing to give up something for the club’s future success. KB's ongoing injuries are a problem for everyone at the club and if we have to manage her game time to extend her career then the decision to move her to a comparable Tier because of this then an easy decision as the club comes first. Mon is our only one worthy of Tier 1 at the moment. Ellie is the future in waiting. Both Mon and Ellie are young and hungry for success.

It’s not about Brennan or Harris who would you rather.
You’ll never know what could have been and KB is probably the most talented key fwd in her era.
But I dont think she’s had a career that’s head and shoulders above all other key fwds and I think that should be the criteria for Tier 1 players.
I think Harris is a real Talent and we need more of that to win a final.
For what it’s worth I dont think Harris is a Tier 1 player.
