It is not just leg speed otherwise we would never have delisted Ash Smith.

It is speed in decision-making, football nous and speed and cleanliness by hand and foot. When you get all of those combined with leg speed, then you get someone like Chris Judd.

I am feeling blah about Hogan for next year. He is not going to address our deficiency and hence I would like us to have our first and 2 second round picks for quality mids this year, need to trade someone for an additional second. Given Hogan is "getable", then keep our first round pick for next year as we might be shopping for him. Timing is better - get to see whether we get development out of our current midfield draftees (Nelson, Duggan, Partington and Mutimer), get a could of decent ones this year and improvement out of our recent midfield trades (Wellers, Yeo, Redden and Jetta).
Yeo might have the tools but I don't think he's got the football brain to particularly good
I think Yeo is far better suited forward than midfield.

All about what Ballantyne wants, he hasn't said anything about what WCE wants

If Ballantyne wants to stay in WA he can stay at Fremantle

Based on the the Cransberg comments you posted we shouldn't be looking at him because at 29 he would be a short term fix not a long term solution - the long term solution would be Liam Ryan who would be available at the pick Fremantle would ask for Ballantyne

So you are conceding we aren't getting near a flag before JK and NN are done?

I think we have a flag capable spine right here and now. We need midfielders to fix our area of glaring weakness and hopefully a crumbing type forward to add to our forward dynamic. Getting Lobb will likely cost us opportunity to address these areas before it's too late.
Lobb could play FF freeing up Jk to play CHF where he would basically be a big roaming midfielder/forward

Found this interesting:

SB: What sort of season review will you preside over?

RG: The review will be over the whole organisation. We’ll look at every part, including the football component. Adam (Simpson) will come and present ... while I don’t think it’s correct for the board to sit around and play shadow match committee, the board will ask hard questions about the strategy he is going to put in place.

If that opportunity cost is pick 12 and something else like MacKenzie then I don't think that's going to cost us the chance to fix our midfield. Pick 12 would probably get us a decent player but not an elite midfielder - look at Duggan and Sheed who were both taken at 11.

If the opportunity cost was getting Lobb ahead of an established mid like Coniglio then I'd agree with you. Short of Swallow (dependent on his knees) I don't think that opportunity is there this year.

If Swallow decides he wants to come home and if the tests on his knees come back OK then I'd definitely prefer chasing him to chasing Lobb.

I think ultimately that is where the rub lies. The problem we have...none of the solutions want to come here. We are going to have to develop our own midfielders, the way we have always done. Will trading out of consecutive first rounds leave us with too much load on Sheed and Duggan in 4-5 years time when Shuey, Redden and Gaff are slowing and Jetta, Priddis etc are retired.

I don't have the answers but history is strongly in favour of good midfields carrying so-so rucks and forwards to flags rather than vice-versa.

Have not got time to go through every page so apologies if this has been discussed but yesterday on the SEN Podcast it was rumoured that Adelaide have offered Dusty martin a 5 million over 6 year contract.

Why would a club like us who is in desperate need of a gun mid not be doing these things or at least making noises on these things. He is exactly the type of player we are after.
Probably doesn't fit the clubs community look which should be irrelevant but we all know its not.
Of course it is rumour at this point but strong enough to get the SEN media talking about it.

definitely
Boyd and Bontempelli are the driving force behind the Bullies.Great footy brain and hands as quick as NN and just beginning to realise how big he is.So i guess as a key forward maybe but as a pure footballer hes leagues better already.

Every year Fremantle makes a public play for a big forward and every year they get rejected. Who really cares if media people have heard about other clubs making offers. All that matters is getting the deal done. Adelaide have only really recruited one big name, Eddie Betts. Even if they land Dusty it's probably because they've lost some pretty big names along the way, so they would have a fair bit more cap room to play with then us.

It's a rumour and just because SEN are talking about it doesn't give it any more legitimacy

Adelaide probably have some cap space after losing Dangerfield last year so can afford such an offer. I don't think we do although it's concerning that our salary cap is that tight Vozzo is saying we are waiting on what the cap for next year will be before making a decision on some current players on our list

All the more reason for the club to develop holistically so that it is a destination. We have the money but lack the creativity.

This could include bases interstate for, match prep, rest and rehab, etc.
What can be done to reduce the impact of travel?
what an be done outside the salary cap?
How can the conditioning and medical support be worlds best (hint we are in a networked global market). I have said enough about medical of later - it is a closed shop and Perth is as closed as you get.
Similarly where can we get the best support staff from, need all assistant coaches be ex players / hacks? EG Sky Team Cycling conditioning coach is a hand picked Aussie swimming coach.
Can we us virtual staff in some roles to ensure we get the best and avoid the relocation issue.

Could someone tell me the keys date for trade period this year, like trade week, draft night etc. Might be worth adding to the first post in that other thread?

I couldn't find on afl.com

I've mentioned it before, but Dusty isn't likely to move to Adelaide and he's definitely not moving to WA for one simple reason, his father.

For those who missed it, his dad got deported to New Zealand and Dusty often flies over and visits him mid-week.

If he moved to Adelaide he would get less chances to do this, if he moved to Perth his chances of doing this are virtually nil.

If Dusty moved it will be to another Melbourne club or maybe Sydney or Brisbane, something that is within reasonable flying time to NZ.

Regardless of who you pick from a list strategy point of view a first rounder is the smart bet for the long term success of the club. I don't think you trade in players in the middle of their careers and give away a first rounder unless you expect the player you trade in to make a significant contribution to your club fairly quickly

What is the first rounder blows hard? The depth of an average experienced player could be much more valuable.

What is the first rounder blows hard? The depth of an average experienced player could be much more valuable.

That logic doesn't really hold up because in that instance why would you ever use a non top ten draft pick when you could continuously trade them in for serviceable players? I think if you have a first round pick, as a recruiter you should be backing yourself to pick a player likely to be a best 22 player for a long period of time.

I'd like us to put a deal like that together for a gun midfielder ..Sloane anyone or suggestions .

Sloane won't be leaving Adelaide with the money he's already on.

Wells, Mitchell, Swallow, Ah Chee and Conca are all possible targets that would most likely join the Eagles.

and what did dangerfield take one year did he?
That's a pretty extreme example though. The best player in the comp. he was already a star before they traded him and look what they gave up. As good as it would be there's no way we are trading in a Dangerfield quality player this season so there's no point in even comparing that. Im talking about the Swallow type players. Guys that are yet to breakout but have potential. They are the only players we stand a chance of landing

I hope not would rather draft if that's the case unless they were bargain buys .
