Gaff, shuey, mcgovern and yeo will earn a pay rise. Gove could potentially be 700k atleast and shuey, yeo and Gaff could fetch 600k in the neare future.
And you wouldn't consider trading out one or even two of those players for the player who is fast becoming the best forward in the league? If they are all 600k plus then just one would provide a lot of TPP room to attract Hogan. If Hogan nominated West Coast as his preferred destination I am sure we'd find some TPP space.

Our trading history would suggest that it's unlikely we will get involved in a bidding war with Fremantle should hogan seek to come back to WA

Since our inaugural squad was formed we haven't chased a really big name with wads of cash or if we have the club has done so very quietly

No doubt we will have a look at hogan but aren't going to offer the money freo will or look to satisfy Melbourne in a trade given what they'll ask for

McGovern + Darling + Hogan.

How do teams stop that?

Hogan will be a perfect replacement for Kennedy in 2 years. Darling and McGovern will be starting to hit their prime.

Melbourne can have Tom Lamb in return.
I suspect Melbourne would be asking for Duggan and 1st round draft. Dees are pinning a lot on Hogan leading their resurgence so will be top price. If McCarthy is woryh 2 first rounder, Hogan is higher.
Question is how much would we prepared to pay?

i would love to have hogan at the eagles but Mcgovern wont be traded as he is fast becoming one of our best players (and of the comp). which probably leaves us with gaff and shuey. i wouldnt want to trade either of them but could see shuey being traded. But i think duggan would be high on melbournes agenda.

Yes I think we saw that with Jetta and Bennell. But suspect there were plenty of conversations we weren't privy to before they nominated their preferred destination. If Hogan was to decide to come home then it would likely be the same. I'm just curious we are using a 38-6 profile in the coming season. I don't understand that unless we are freeing up TPP for some purpose with the new rules - the trading environment is changing all the time now. Could amount to nothing but BigFooty is all about creating speculation.

Freo offered 2 shit first rounders for McCarthy .
Not like either of those picks would be close to top 5 or 10 .
If hogan was available I would think we would be all over it and not really giving a shit if freo were keen .
In 2 years freo will be on the Ross Lyon scrap heap and hogan will be chasing success , meaning we will be in the box seat .

I think things have changed a bit since simmo has moved into the top job. First time i can recall that we entered the draft and selected 4 victorian kids and didnt really go for local talent (except for waterman). Then we have specifically targeted Redden to fill a gap on our list. we are known to be a very conservative club but i think hawthorns success shows that conservatism doesnt really lead to success and i think simmo is bring a fresh outlook to this side. Hogan could be a once in a generation player and i think we would be stupid to pass up an opportunity like that. But like i said, we will have to lose some quality talent for Hogan. It most likley will be on of our gun victorian mids.

Can someone tell me if we were interested in the two mini drafts?
2011 Mini Draft
>Jager O'Meara
>Brad Crouch
2012 Mini Draft
>Jesse Hogan
>Jack Martin

3 out of 4 of these guys have been bonified stars and have had an impact from day 1. Jack Martin looks to be heading that way aswell. Just sucks that injuries have affected all for and in particularly O'Meara and Crouch.

I'm sure we were but the asking price for those guys was ridiculous. Needed top 3 picks to get them and then some. The system was flawed because GWS/GCS only wanted picks when I'm sure the AFL hoped they would go for mature aged stars.

True, crows gave pick 10 and end of first round pick for crouch. and suns gave away a pick 4 and end of first round comp. funny how WA produced three mini round picks and now they struggle to produce 1 genuine top 10 pick.

We could of got one of those picks if we had traded away Beau Waters, at that stage he was AA and future captain of our club.
GWS wanted him big time but WCE obviously didn't want to trade him.
Hindsight we should of done it, but glad we didn't I love Beau Waters being a one team man.

From memory GWS were wanting Beau Waters as inaugural captain and we could of had 1st pick in the mini draft. Beau was asked if he wanted itvand was told we wanted him but would not stand in the way. He stayed. Looks like a mistake but we would all ge billionaires with hindsight trading.

doubt beau wanted to leave either. he loves the club too much. we just have to land some of the young WA talent interstate. Hogan, cripps, coniglio, martin, swallow, pickett and o'meara to name a few. some of these guys are just entering their prime as well. bit disspointed to see coniglio re-sign this year, thought he wanted to come back home.

Seems odd now but Jack Martin was the first pick that Suns took lesving Melbourne the "runner-up ". Hogan is the same cohort as Boyd - all the crap about Boyd being the stand out would have been interesting if there was no mini draft.

Let's not go into the missing the weekly pasta night with the family. According to some he was ready to come home. Then signs up for +2

well suns rated Martin the next big thing at the start of last season and said he will be better than O'meara. Unfortunately both had injuries but he could become an elite player. Boyd would have gone number 3 if both martin and hogan were in an open draft. To be fair Hogans a freak an does make Boyd look piss weak. But to be fair key forwards take ages to develop and boyd will too. Boyd should have played a lot more this season but the dogs like the structure of having redpath be a forward/ruck )monstor type forward and stringer be the mobile key position player. Most teams implement 3 tall forwards but dogs wanted a more mobile forward line. Moving on, Boyd wont get to Hogans level but when he develops, he will be scary. 200cm 104 kgs already and in a few years time will just be too strong and too big for too many defenders.

whats this. Im fairly new to big footy so im not sure what you mean by it. Even he left he wouldnt have gone to GWS like they wanted him to. H ewould have gone to crows.

Hogan was always and will always be a better player than Boyd. Recruiters get caught up in size and potential. Hogan has all three things required to make a truly great key forward. Amazing hands, Great reader of the flight of the ball and a great kick at goal.

Boyd was taller and seen to be the 'modern prototype' and victorian. Hence Boyd was seen to be better......

could also add to that hogans more versatille, could play CHF and FF while i cant see Boyd in anything other than a FF. Could make him a decent back up ruck tho.
Boyd will still be scary good but wont dominate like Hogan. Hogan is the buddy of this generation (not in the way they play but the way the dominate).

If we'd traded Beau Waters at that time, as a heart and soul type player, he might have gone but it would have been reluctantly. You can be sure that we would have lost a few more players since then though. That sort of trade hurt a club in the medium run I think, it erodes the confidence that particularly interstate players have that the club has any loyalty towards them.

There would have been such a bad uproar from the fans. i dont think i have seen an interstate player thats been the heart beat of the club. Even if we got hogan, it would have take a bit of time for the club to gain that trust from the fans.

The way the Eagles managed it was to be open about it. My recollection was it went:- GWS want you as their inaugural captain. We still want you. Preference is for you to stay but given the opportunity, we would not make it hard. Over to you Beau.

There was never going to be any forcing out the door. Beau was VC at the time and it was more not standing in his way.
