Kappa I’m not disputing “the real world”.
My issue is the inference we would take advantage of him.
We ask our players to give their heart and soul to the club and then rip them off at the first chance?
Not how I’d like to think we treat our players.
In fact, (as I have stated previously) I know players/negotiations are treated with a lot more dignity.

Ripping off is the wrong word, but make no mistake the club will be trying to be the best possible deal for themselves... And so they should.

Tonnes of players that don't have big demand get "ripped off" every year, it's how we can afford to offer guys like Grundy 1 mil per year... You don't think that happens?

The club won't take advantage of him... Wink wink nudge nudge.

We have seriously bad list managers if they can't take advantage of a young guy with no contract experience or qualifications.
How in-depth are these contracts really? I reckon Jordy would have a reaosnable idea of what he's doing, surely players don't leave all the power to the managers to score a good deal, they'd be deep in discussions too. He signed a lucrative deal in 2018, so he'll know how things are done and he'll push for something similar.

Considering this contract will probably be worth many millions of dollars it will be very complicated. Contract law is a mess at the best of times.

In 2018 his manager did the contract and he signed it when he was happy..

Libba is certainly an interesting one to bring up. Could only really ever work if he’s being selected to play purely as clearance, inside mid role to release the likes of Pendles, Treloar and Sidebottom (and allow us to use JDG more inside 50). We’ve seen the bulldogs try Libba in other roles around the ground and he doesn’t have any versatility or knack for an alternate position. Contract expires end of next year so would have to be a trade this year.

In terms of free agents from the Dogs, Jackson Trengrove would be one I’d look at. Pretty versatile big man who’d offer us a lot of flexibility in structure or at worst be solid KPD depth.
That's true, Libba is very one dimensional and in my fantasy De Goey is going to hopefully become a 70%-80% game time midfielder so having thought more about it, Libba probably wouldn't be a great fit, given I see the Brown boys' midfield time increasing also. I'd just like the club to have a little more strength around the footy, as we've been beaten by bigger and stronger midfields in our last two finals defeats, and I don't think Rupert Wills is the solution.

Trengove is in a similar position to where Jordan Roughead was in his last year at the Bulldogs. As depth, he's often dragged into roles which aren't his best fit. They're past using him as a forward which he's hopeless at, and playing him most often as a relieving ruck and tall defender, but with adequate height down back following the acquisition of Keath, you can probably expect his minutes to be minimal. I think he's a serviceable defender and he'd be available for chips, however he also will be 30 years old come the start of the season so that works out of his favour.

My question is with reduced list numbers, how many rucks and key defenders can we carry on our list? I'd imagine the club will be looking at cutting numbers in those areas. We're well stocked in those positions, it wouldn't make sense to say, trade Scharenberg and then go and pick up a 30 year old Trengove. If 2021 was looking normal, he'd be a decent player to pick up who could potentially contribute to a finals side, but due to age and our depth in his two positions, I wouldn't go for him.

They may be able to go into the academy at a young age (14, I think) and develop them. But given the game is growing over in those areas, the more exposure to the game and programs the better. Plus out of all academy players, only a small percentage even get picked up. But at least the program is there to give kids a chance.
I’m with you.
keep the academies if at all possible.

Really great points regarding Trengrove and the list size reduction. Clubs are going to have to make very strategic moves and changes to lists to avoid being caught short half way through the 2021 season and beyond.

However in Trengroves favour, looking at our list I think any KPD you can confidently pencil in for their bodies to provide 1+ games, if required, should get a run on the list. Looking at Dunn, Reid and Shaz (and evening Darcy if we’re being honest), I’d be swayed to taking Trengrove into the list in 2021 over at least 2 of Dunn, Reid and Shaz.

In the rucks, is possibly where I see him as the best depth. Going into 2021 having only Grundy and then Lynch and Cameron (neither proven) as the back ups doesn’t fill me with much confidence if something were to go wrong, and I think moving Cox their full time would cause a lot of problems to our structure. In hindsight losing say Dunn and Lynch for example and replacing Trengrove could be the smartest play as we have one player who can provide depth in 2 areas compared to two players on the list providing depth for the same areas.

Its a cut throat industry, impossible to win premierships if youre weak at the contract table. You don't build dynasties overpaying players, it's the opposite.

Its how the real world works in a highly competitive environment.

I've been part of CBA negotiations before, every inch is bitterly fought over by both sides, that's what a manager is there to do for players... Their entire role is basically to stop players getting screwed in terms of money or conditions/fine print.
I’d have hoped we would have learned from the whole Cloke fiasco.

Poor o

Poor old Clokey gets a bad wrap around here. He did stay with us when Carlton were offering $1 million more over 5 years, mainly because he loved the club.

Hes a premiership player and one of the best forwards we had had in the past 30 years. sure he went downhill a bit quickly but people are very harsh. Was a great contributor and a key element in our 2010 success.

i heard directly from a player manager (not david!) that travis never had any intention of leaving the pies.

however david was furious that he felt the pies signed up trav to his previous deal for unders. it was the week before he won the b&f and the pies prob knew he was going to win, david felt it was rushed through as winning the b&f as a young key position player would have meant a bigger contract.

the next contract the clokes decided they would push it out as long as possible.

David was too busy getting trav and the boys to do handball comps and sign autographs at shopping centres.

Brayden Crossley has just received his doping ban and has been given 12 months ending on 28 June 2020. I reckon he is definitely worth a punt. Already shown a bit as a tall aggressive key forward and in the right age bracket for us. Would give Cox plenty of competition for his spot.

Yep definitely should be looking into him. Especially if the Irish boys can’t come back this year.

Cocaine metabolite on match day. No thanks.

Without looking at the specific details it seems that Crossley is very lucky to get just 12 months. Murray copped 18 months and Sam Gilbert got 2 years for testing positive for the same metabolite.

From what I know of him, Isn't he more of a Ruck?

The footy he has played has been both forward and ruck. I liked what he brought as a forward because he attacks the footy hard. I think at 200cm that is a perfect quality for our system.

Can we ever have enough Braydens?

Id pass as it were, not sure it’s adding something we don’t particularly have.
But there are better judges than me that’s for sure.

I think he is worth a shot on talent. I believe in second chances provided his attitude is okay. It's hard to judge that from the couch.
