Yep. Sort of feels like he’s looked at the league, decided which team is the most desperate for a tall forward and said “I want to go there!”

Honestly the only way I’d be comfortable with the club taking him is if he trained with us over the summer and we considered him as a supplementary rookie selection.

He's more of a 3rd tall forward then a traditional kpf though. With Mihocek being perfect for that role, Kelly also possibly playing that role until he puts on the necessary size, there isn't really a spot for him in our forward line. You combine that with the fact he hasn't shown any decent form in years and his apparent attitude issues, there's simply no chance we take a shot on him. I kind of feel sorry for him, as you said he comes off desperate in that article.

DFA or not, the point is not the cost of Cam McCarthy... the point is the odds on likely result. And as I said, with smaller list sizes the risk being taken only increases.
Sure, but the potential payoff is huge if it hits.

We’ve been betting gorillas (as the Gimp likes to boast) on $1.10 shots that have failed, e.g. Beams.

Why not bet $1 on a $1,000.00 shot who has a better chance than that of hitting?

He plays much taller though. He’s different to Mihocek.

Kicked 35 goals in his 2nd season in a rubbish team.

If he comes cheap, absolute no brainer.

I am not huge on McCarthy. But I don’t mind it simply due to the fact I’m over continuing to have Dunn, Broomhead, Lynch and Tohill on the list. We constantly rerookie and get nothing while Richmond constantly get Pickett, Stack, Arts etc

If McCarthy comes in at the expense of the above 4, the upside is much higher and we lose literally nothing.

If he plays up and acts like a fool just boot him out back to WA. Last chances sometimes can do wonders, and unlike Bennell his body isn’t cactus.
Amen to these two posts.

id take cam mccarthy if he came cheap
unless we can snaffle another cheapish tall like 2MP
Not outright against 2MP but he won’t be cheap, tradewise or salary.

We have enough injury prone and debilitated players on our list without actively recruiting another in the hope, despite the evidence on him, that he finally comes good
Did we ever find out what caused his collapse at training recently, and what the diagnosis was?

Two very different players. Even if we got 2mp McCarthy would still be worth a look as a rookie.

As I said, the only way I’d feel comfortable is if the club took him as a supplementary selection. If he trained with the squad over the summer and the club were satisfied with his standards, commitment, and that he could fill a role in our forward line then fine. Otherwise I’d say no way.

Bloody great news! Get on the phone to he and Longmuir, due diligence needs to be done, but that should be a no-brainer if he’s willing to put the work in. Who would you rather have on a list, McCarthy or an inanimate carbon rod (of whom we have a few)?
How tall is the rod you have in mind?

Mental health issues - check

Can’t get a game at a bottom 8 club - check

Cracked the shits and Left halfway through a season - check

Third Afl club after first 2 not working out - check

Na sounds great

What have I missed in the story as I recall him being homesick and so wanting to return to WA not that long ago?

Everything has a price - McCarthy on the right deal is worth the punt.

I was right against him when I heard he was leaving Freo, but risk v reward.
Having now seen cox is on 550k, I realise we have no money to get a genuine readymade KPF. On that basis McCarthy is worth a crack cheaply as a 2nd tall, and hopefully we can grab one in the draft to develop along with Kelly.

our poor list management and paying overs puts us in a position of having to take cheap risks unfortunately. We def won’t be in the ball park for luring a big fish.

Bring McCarthy in on minimum wage on the rookie list. Harley Bennell style. If it doesn’t work out so be it, the reward so much greater than the risk

Normally perhaps so... but next year the list is looking at being 40senior listed plus 2 rookie spots plus CAT B players.

Smaller lists change the dynamic of the risk vs reward here

Finlayson gettable again this off season.

Adding Finlayson and McCarthy would ease our KPF woes.
Neither are a KPF nor play like one. Would be handy 2nd talls perhaps and finlayson is a swingman so adds depth. But def doesn’t solve our main target issues. Adding both would mean we would have checkers, finlayson, kelly, McCarthy, prob a few to many 2nd/3rd talls especially considering we have Degoey. Kelly the only one that may develop into a key target with time, maybe.

one of our issues is our forward structure. Can’t have to many 2nd/3rd marking forwards, need a good mix of KPF, 2nd talls and crumbers for a good forwardline

Just don’t get him at the expense of losing a shot at a more reliable key target. Take the punt if it can be done for as good as nothing.
He’ll be a delisted free agent, so basically a list spot, or more likely, a rookie spot as a supplementary selection at the end of summer.

We have enough dead wood to cut that it shouldn’t be an issue tbh.
