My thought is if we can pick him up as a DFA or for a negligible pick and on minimum wage then McCarthy is worth a punt. Still think Peter Wright is worth a look. Out of favour at the Suns and they suggested on the First Crack on Sunday night he may want to come home.

Obviously would be nice to be able to get someone like Cameron or Daniher or one of the highly rated juniors, but just not sure we will have the trade currency to pull that off (both Cameron and Daniher are restricted free agents I believe, so you can bet that Giants and Essendon would match and force us to the trade table).

No point discussing McDonald, only way we get that high in the draft is losing Moore or de goey which won't happen. would be happy to try and sneak up towards 5/6 somehow to possibly get barrass if he is still there. reminds me of naughton. Does not appear any stand out tall forwards after the first 2, starting to get that bad feeling hyne and co will pick mid again and then reef and then KPFs from the 3rd round on. maybe Reid around our first pick. Twomey has Cox around 23 so no real push for tall forwards early from him.

Sounds good. Few big boys there. Hopefully Reef slides so we get him just after our first pick with a tall!

The Beams deal should not taint other list building opportunities, simply because of mental health issues being a possible commonality. Beams cost exponentially more. The two situations are not even remotely similar.

I also agree with this.
If Beams doesnt scare us off then the fact he's sat out an entire season, walked out on 2 clubs and never delivered on talent at freo probably should

That’s absolutely fair enough, as long as it’s looked at fairly objectively.

I'd lean towards a No for McCarthy. Seems to have pretty much packed it in at 2 clubs now and hasn't played footy at a decent level for a number of years.

Plus, I don't necessarily think he is the sort KPF we are looking for.

We have done well getting players who gone Backwards and Made them at Least Solid AFL Players

Could get Both

Interesting to see how we approach this years trade period. Do we go all out for the flag and plug holes, or try and stock up on draft picks and replenish young talent.

I'd love to come out of this trade period with Polec and Ben Brown, and would be dipping my toe in the water for Jack Lonie and Riley Collier-Dawkins.

But that would probably cost us most of our picks.

Polec is in a reported 600-700k till 2023. Not a chance we can cover that and he’s not worth anywhere near that. Brown they will play hardball, but we’d be asking questions atleast

I reckon they'll pay part Polec's salary to get rid of him
I think he’s an upgrade on Phillips, but how much would they really be willing to pay, who knows.. It’s a weird situation cause I didn’t think he was playing bad, Pittard was. That said I see our defence and lots of pace, crisp, iq, Murphy I see a lot of potential for moves to the wing.

I’d rather our trade focus be on KPF, and crumber.

I see us more trying for a Flag and Plug Holes because of Eddie want Bucks to win a Flag.

Going to the Draft slows that down

The question is whether the Kangaroos want Polec off their books from a salary cap perspective, or whether they want it from a list management perspective.

If you take on the salary, you typically get them very cheaply in terms of a trade. Ie how Hawthorn have picked up Scully and Patton, and why we traded guys like Marley Williams for pick 100+. It's basically just salary dumping. The trade is more about getting the money off the books than it is getting compensation from a trade perspective.

On the other hand, if the old team is still picking up a large chunk of the salary, then that increases trade value.

I dare say the Roos aren't in any salary cap strife, so would probably prefer to pay some of the wage but get a higher pick.

I'm thinking a package of Brown + Polec for our 1st and 2nd rounder, with draft picks offered back in return.

Both are 27 so in my opinion a good age for a flag tilt. It would solve both our key forward and wing issues. How much better would we look with Polec on a wing, as opposed to Phillips or Mayne. This would allow us to use Sidebottom more as a forward or inside mid.

Brown has his limitations, but is still a 50+ a year goal kicker, and is hard to stop on a lead. A huge upgrade on Cox at a minimum.

So, it all comes down to whether the Roos take on a portion of the salary, or whether they want to salary dump.

I agree that we can't afford to take on those salaries.

With treloar, Howe, Degoey and sidey back I don’t see us having wing issues. I think we have a plethora of talent to cover Phillips especially given daicos form.

That said if they willing to pick up his tab, sure!

I like Polec. He’s the polish you add to a good team which is where North have made the mistake.

He’s not a guy you build around. And that’s on the North higher ups overstating their list thinking they’re in flag contention. It’s all a balls up on their part really.

I think they’d be open to full rebuild mode and parting ways for picks.

and Some of his Salary as I doubt we can afford his Full Salary in our Cap

I think he ends up at Collingwood next year. Will be instant best 22. Appearing in the scratch match for the Pies was no accident. Reece let the potential buyers have a good close look at him.

The only question is the price. Ned Guy is probably already in discussion with them about it

Instant best 22?
I have our best 22 next year as:

FB: Maynard - Roughead - Howe
HB: Crisp - Moore - Quaynor
C: Daicos - Adams - Sidebottom
HF: Elliott - Kelly - Mihocek
FF: Stephenson - Cox - De Goey
FOL: Grundy - Pendlebury - Treloar
INT: Sier - Noble - Greenwood - Madgen/Langdon

I could see Polec pushing out Noble maybe, but considering his pricetag, age and the fact that he's looking to join his 4th club despite only turning 28 in a month I'd be very hesitant.

Would North take this years 1st, next years 2nd & Phillips for the
2nd pick?
Maybe if they were able to move Polec on? I don't know enough about their needs (not even sure their list management does), but Phillips and Polec are likely too samey

Fair point. That 18 looks set. Not that we’ll ever have all those players on the field at once for long at Collingwood. The I/C looks much more open to conjecture though.

It’s just more that I see Polec taking Phillips, Thomas or WHE place at half forward... you don’t have any of those 3 in your lineup. Whereas Bucks has all 3 of them usually

Yeah, not sure why I'm trying to trick myself into thinking we'll ever have a clean bill of health, lol.

I would definitely take him if North pay some of his salary though!
