Where is Jayden Shorts contract at? I don’t care how many cheap stats he gets he is exactly the type of guy we should be using for a pick upgrade and relieve some salary for future targets. Great player in a really good team but in an average/poor side he is not worth having around. Refuses to defend and 3 or 4 times today just needed to put his body on the line to help out his teammates and wouldn’t do it. Sure that’s not his primary role in the team but when it’s your turn you go. Look at a few guys of similar size, Rioli X 2, baker, mansell they are going back every time.

Agree with this.

Gets a lot of cheap footy. Was at the game and noticed he ran into Banks space quite a few times to chase the kick.

Watching Baker today getting into a scrap with a few players, I'll say this now he isn't going to Freo. Seemed a bit heated especially the convo he was having with Emmett.
Getting into a scrap with opposition players in a game where frustrations boiled over doesn't necessarily mean he won't go there at the end of the year.

Stopped and walked when Freo were running in numbers. Lefau was miles back and chased after them while short chucked a hand out as the went past and then stopped.

Even if we get high draft picks I have no confidence that they will bring in the right players.
If the kids that Toce recruited at the Saints are anything to go by, I'd expect we're going to land some good young kids.

If we lose to Bulldogs and Brisbane, our round 10 win rate and percentage for 2024 will be worse than at round 10 for every season since 1917 (including every season of the dark days and all wooden spoon years in the last 107 years).

Let that sink in.

Naaah that noodle armed kid we picked instead of

1. Matthew Pavlich (2000-2016)

6 x best and fairest (2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2011)
8 x leading goalkicker (2001, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2012)
6 x All-Australian (2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008)
353 games, 700 goals, 1.98 goals per game, 126 Brownlow votes, 0.35 votes per game

And then Lennon over Cripps!

Don't want derail the thread too much but...

Dees got Trengove and Scully - who they picked instead of

1. Dustin Martin (2009- Current)
3 x Norm Smith medals
1x Brownlow
Likely to end up being the greatest finals player of all time.
Don't even need to list his other accolades.

This is rubbish. In pre draft rankings both Scully and Trengove were ranked higher. I’m certain Richmond would have taken one of those 2 if available. We lucked out that Martin fell into our lap. Melbourne did nothing wrong. Richmond’s history of stuffing up in the first round of the draft is hard to beat.
This is just classic "other clubs do everything better than us" bullshit. Applying this logic, how certain are you that Freo didn't have Fiora higher? Not saying they did, but I guarantee that you have no idea.

Yes, we've made some shockers, but we've also nailed a few first rounders too. Built a ****ing dynasty around Cotch, Martin, Riewoldt and Rance. Brace yourself, as this may shock you - but most clubs miss more than they hit.

Every club in the comp would eat their own shit to have had the team success we had in 2017-2020.

Don't think so, I also recall West Coast were very keen to trade for our pick 3 at the time because they also wanted Dusty.

Sorry, other posters like TigerImposter and RJK Tiger usually ignore facts, so I just assumed everyone did :(

enrich me with some facts about today mate

I told you in 2021 this team was going down the stinker & the club needed to rebuild ASAP, hardcore. Tell me some facts about how that worked out for us.

Worst group of 26y.o's and younger in 40 years now. This team is screwed

How old are you?

As a 43 year old i can assure you that outside of a 4 year period, being a supporter of this team was a "worst case scenario" for choosing a team

If you remove the 2017-20 years, we have won 2 finals over the past 41 years.

Tambling over Franklin humm beats the others hands down but yeah Cripps now would be handy and pav back in the day. We got lucky with Dusty as we were hoping Scully would drop. It's just football ifs and buts.

Yeah Lennon over Cripps. Tambling over Franklin. Fiora over Pavlich. Even Jarryd Oakley Nichols over Mitch Clarke, Shaun Higgins, Grant Birchall, Shannon Hurn & Nathan Jones. Its actually embarrassing we are trying to act like we are good at this. Outside of the Cotchin & Dusty drafts, we have never really smashed it in 30 years have we?

Short like a few others was going through the motions yesterday. Stats wise looked a good game, but defensively he was terrible.
I’d rather Brown become our distributor off hb, he also needs to work on his defensive game, but his kicking and decision making is excellent.
Probably time to move on and get the back 6 in place that with any luck will be part of our next finals thrust in 3 years.

Playing footy in a team that keeps losing sucks. Everyone starts kick-chasing and can't be ****ed playing their role in the team. That's at amateur level.

I can't even imagine how difficult it must be to coach professional athletes in a losing team. The senior players will want to avoid injury, boost their stats and try and get name in the best (even in a 60 point loss) because it boosts their chances of getting another contract or trade. Remember how bad we were in the second half of 2016?

I'd be careful about simply throwing out all the players we've got to start again. That's no guarantee of success. A few leaders (like Baker) can quickly drag up standards and build a team.

One guy we should look at trading is Shai. He's not a leader. I'm not sure we're the right club for him anymore. His trade value is huge. It's worth exploring.

Do not disagree with this take on Bolton.

However, we're already likely to be stacked for picks this year, do we really need more? Are we sure it's a good enough draft to trade so heavily into?

Wrong.

“In the third of a special feature series leading into the 2014 National Draft, Richmond’s Recruiting Manager Francis Jackson provides a fascinating insight into the 2009 drafting of Tiger young gun Dustin Martin.

No Dustin doubt
“2009 was a very interesting year, with the close finish (for the wooden spoon). Melbourne finished below us, and qualified for a priority pick. We weren’t quite sure (what it would do with the top two selections), but we were very, very strong on Dustin.”
“We were ecstatic when we found out that Melbourne had committed to Tom Scully and Jack Trengove“
