What is the general consensus on Matt Suckling....
Bit of talk on the Hawthorn board about who has any trade value that we might be willing to trade out.

My personal feel is that he is a required player, but if we was on the table then the best we could hope for would be a straight 2nd rounder, an upgraded first round pick (no greater than pick 10), or packaged up with our first round pick for a semi-decent young mid.

Thoughts......??
I'd love his kicking skills and run and carry at the kennel (he'd be a Bob Murphy replacement), but would he want to go from a contender to a side who is still a couple of years away even though we have a lot of kids on the rise, probably not I'd say. We'd definitely do our 2nd for him though, we might lose Higgins though as well through FA so hhmmmm maybe Higgins compo if it's band 2? I'd look at Taylor Duryea too, but he'd be the obvious one to step into Sucklings role if he left.

yeah we're very lucky in this regard. We'd be even richer if we could ever get Pears to stay on the park for more than 10 minutes at a time as well.

I've got a feeling the plan is to keep Steiny and basically just slot him into fletcher's spot whenever he calls time, but he's killing it in the VFL, so he's got currency, and we could in theory use him to climb back into this draft.

Only drawback to him as a player is he's probably 4-5cms shorter than what you'd call 'ideal' key defensive size

I dont think steinberg would have any currency. We had a similar size key defender kill it in the vfl, tom simpkin. The only thing is when called to play afl he was just too short to match it with the afl key forwards and with the key forwards these days getting taller and taller recruiters will look to get key backs that are tall. So with all this in mind plus the fact that he hasn't even played afl I don't think you would get much, if anything, for him.

With Maxwell apparently calling it quits…Ariel Steinberg for the pies 3rd rounder or Stein + 3rd rounder for a 2nd rounder?

Similar sizes, similar styles, Maxwell obviously the better leader and organizer, but Steinberg is better one on one imo. Very good intercepter and distributes fairly well

How can a bloke who's never played a game be better one-on-one than an established defender?

Fair comment. I can tell you if it wasn't for the excellent from of our defence, Steinberg would be getting a game.

He'd actually be playing AFL for most other sides ATM.

Keep him around for when Flectcher (one day) retires then seems like a sensible option

I have a sneaking suspicion he'll be trade bait - not because we'd like to get rid of him, but because he'd get a senior spot at more than a few clubs (similar to Jenkins a few years ago).

Believe me I'd like to keep him. Has been great in the VFL this year.

If we could secure a third, or even second round pick for him I reckon it'd get done.

Talia won't get aa unlike mackenzie.

And Hooker will be the AA FB.

Your comment was imbecilic, regardless of whether you refer to Talia or Hooker.

Scharenberg will play that role next year. He is a huge talent and Steinberg does not get games ahead of him.

If Collingwood went for Steinberg I could see it being a swap of depth players.

I seriously doubt Steinberg will get you a second round pick. Third maybe. He's a rookie who has never played a game at senior level. We have a similarly sized rookie defender killing it in the VFL, Ben Darrou. Doubt anyone would pay more than a third or fourth rounder for him.

Has Steinberg been put on the senior list at any point?

I don't want to turn it into a shitfight based on the team you support, but I dare say breaking into Essendons defence is a downside harder than Richmonds.

I think a third rounder is more likely, however its not totally beyond the realms of possibility - teams have paid 'overs' in the past to secure what they need.

Fair enough. I haven't seen Steinberg play at all so I've no idea what I'm talking about tbh. Just looking at numbers, he's very similar to Darrou. Who I rate pretty highly btw.

I got a look at Darrou early in the year (granted it was only one game), and he actually looked ok.

Steinberg was initially used as a forward and they shifted him back last year (no idea why) but has really blossomed into the role - fantastic intercept mark as far as defenders go.

First year was Bendigo's leading goal kicker.
Second year got moved back to aide development.
Third year stayed back to continue development.
This year stayed back because he was too ****ing good at it.
