trade idea to help carlton

With Nick Stevens set to pull the pin , and need to pay him out $400,000 (going by the media)

Could a Bottom Team trade for him to help out the blues and pay him out - even though his not going to play for that club .

so it free's up some of the cap the blues.

ex Melb or Tigers could offer up a very late pick for him which the blues could pass and then use it in the pre-season draft

but if this was to happen (which 99% wont) what would Carlton have to do to return the fav.

p/s before people go on why in the hell would you wanna help Carlton , its just a random thought idea.

Carlton could then turn around and buy a $400K ticket to Rich/Melb B&F next year. Rich/Melb get there money back and Carlton have freed up space in their salary cap for what ever they were freeing space up for.

actually trades like this happen in the NBA, teams virtually give players away to dump salary.

if its that much concern to the blues they could offer stevens + draft pick for a 6 runder or something noone is likely to use. basically a team with cap room like melbourne are buying a draft pick for 400K. unlikely but could happen

Why would anyone do it?

Quite apart from the cap space, he'd also occupy a spot on he list that could go to a speculative late pick player.

Not sure about other clubs, but I suspect Richmond is frontloading contracts at the moment, to keep players happy and provide maximum flexibility in the future, so we may not actualy have that much space 'free'.

I suspect Carlton would need to offer certain 'inducements', be they draft picks, cash, or an accompanying player of actual value to the degree that the club taking him would have a noteworthy benefit, and even if they did that, I suspect the AFL would investigate as it's a manipulation of the way the cap/trading is supposed to work.

Assuming it was all allowed, I'd want at least 800K cash to do it, or a swap of picks ( Carltons 2nd for Richmonds 3rd )...might sound a lot, but really there has to be a lot there before we'd bother ( and a lot of need before any club would ask ).
