Trade Period 2023 - winners and losers

Winner, Sydney. They got decent players in positions of need cheaply.
Loser, Fremantle. Just keep losing players.

Bombers and Port could go either way. I don’t rate any of Ports pickups much but all were targeted for needs so if they come off it could win them a flag.
Bombers brought in two decent players and Duursma has huge upside for absolutely stuff all. We’ve seen this story before though.

We ****ed up our draft hand for 2 seasons last time though.... this year alone is better than what we had for 2017/8

Last time - 2017 = Pick 49, 66 & 76. 2018 = Pick 11, 60 & 72
This time - 2023 = Pick 9, 31 & 35. (2024 draft hand intact)

In 3-5 years time its not Stringer, Smith & Saad vs McKay, Gresham and Duursma, it's SSS vs McKay, Gresham, Duursma, Pick 9, Pick 31, Pick 35, 2nd and 3rd Round pick in 2024.

Winners:
  • Brisbane adding Doedee for free to a grand final side, and adding a bargain ruck-forward who has already shown signs.
  • Sydney adding four best 22 players whilst keeping their first round pick. Puts them in a position to ideally contend once more.
  • St Kilda were clean by adding speed in Henry and Dow for good prices. Billings and Gresham were expendable and they got a good pick for Gresham.
  • West Coast couldn't do much in their position, but Flynn can play from what I've seen and Brockman will be a gem. Supporters should be happy.

Meh and worth commenting on:
  • Adelaide did really well in their Burgess and McAdam trades but their failure to attract any best 22 players despite numerous attempts is a bit ordinary. Will need improvement to come from within.
  • Collingwood acquiring Schultz is big but the future first round pick will be an interesting watch if they don't go top four. Probably should have recruited a depth defender given the uncertainty on Murphy
  • Essendon we've seen this episode before 6 years ago when they picked up Saad, Stringer and Smith. I like McKay but not at the price. Gresham will be a whipping boy in no time and Duursma is less than ordinary.
  • Melbourne covered their areas of need fairly well in my opinion without bringing in any clear guns. Keeping Petty was the biggest win.
  • North added some serviceable depth and improved their draft hand. However with Toby Pink and Tristan Xerri as their best key defender and ruck going into 2024, they could have done more.

Losers:
  • Port Adelaide do not have a premiership quality list and just gave up on almost two whole drafts to recruit three players who could conceivably play SANFL next year, and Esava who is a below average key defender. Looks absolutely horrible.
  • Fremantle's inability to neither acquire good players nor hold onto key players has killed what they had building in 2021. Another year of nothing looms.
  • the Hawks got a good deal for Ginnivan but they butchered their work by trading Ryan and getting little for Brockman. Gunston adds nothing beyond sentimentality. Also overpaid for Chol.
Agree re port. Think it’ll come back to bite them.

Winner:

Me, for choosing this year to not pay any attention at all until it was all finished. Trade period seems very long these days.

Did I miss the constant repetition and misinformation and endless speculation radio? Did I miss the BF posters taking personal offence to every suggested trade?

Nup.

How so?

And not sure how Dee's fans think Petty I the next Buddy. Your club was the one offering him Buddy level money. We just help a required player to his contract.
In the petty thread, some very ott hype. Im glad we haven't paid that

Panicked in regards to McAdam and Billings. I think they wanted to be seen as doing something even if that something isnt all that good

Turned Brandon Ryan a player we picked up 5 months ago into chol who is the same age and gunston, then slid back 2nd round picks for ginnavin . Good result.

I’m really scratching my head with what they’ve done.

traded a future first and Duursma (a former pick 18) for a bunch of fringe players.

can’t wait for Kane Cornes to explain why this was such a good trade period for the . Because it looks like a car crash to me.

they are one injury to butters or Rozee away from having traded out a 2024 top 10 pick.
Or just loss a lot of close games they won this season.

Winners were Sydney and Essendon for me. North to as lesser extent due to the concessions rather than who the added.

Lot of clubs added players but Sydney and Essendon are the only two who definitely improve their lists. Jury's out for most clubs on whether their moves will make any difference.

The big difference between this year and 17-19 is that we retained and actually upgraded our draft hand for the year.

I think Brisbane had a good year, Collingwood too. Geelong got overs for Rat, as did Richmond for Soldo.

Short Term Freo are losers but could end big winners next year if they manage to lure Logan McDonald to the club.

I also think The Crows were losers in a way, Burgess is just an okay player that may be a good back up, but they spent too much time chasing Harrison Petty that they dropped the ball in trying to improve their midfield (their main weakness)

Granted there was not many quality ones on the market (who would want to go to SA) but they should have done more to try bundle their way into the top 7 or so of the national draft (which admittedly could still happen on the night of the draft)
Laying the ground work for Petty next year ;) Burgess would have been the better need at Port Power instead of BZT or Sav, they would have gotten him much cheaper as well.

We took 4 picks inside 22 last draft, have 2 first rounders this year. Last time the club was in this position, we traded in Ryan Griffin, Stevie J, screwed the cap and culture and ended up losing quality kids like Steele. The biggest difference this time round is the guy steering the ship.

Surprised at a few clubs lack of action. GWS not trying to improve their list, Geelong and Richmond not really doing anything
My Catters will wait for next offseason when we have all of our own picks and a buttload of cap space from retirements.

Hi Bailey Smith and Ollie Lord ;)

There was no one decent on the trade or free agent market that was worth The Giants time chasing anyway.

I don't believe clubs (esp with ones with exciting and talented ones as GWS) need to makes moves just for the sake of it.

Its probably a good thing that GWS have stability and continuity from a list management perspective, seems like almost every season you have lost at 2 or 3 quality/required players to other clubs, but that didn't happen this year, which is really positive and refreshing for The Giants

Absolutely this. We will take on the Oral Fantasy as a rookie and unfortunately missed HHs little brother ... but the list is looking solid
