On the Hall trade, we either take a 1st round pick, or a 2nd round plus decent player.

There is no point in us trading for the sake of trading.
Once you get past the top dozen or so picks (I would almost argue half dozen) it is a lottery.

If we are not going to improve our list, we are better off keeping Hall (and O'Keefe for that matter) in Sydney.

Even within the top dozen (or half a dozen) it is a lottery, albeit with moderately better odds than lower down in the draft.

With a top 5 pick over the past decade you could have got a Pavlich, Riewoldt, Franklin, Judd, Hodge or Cooney. Even a few picks lower you might have found a Bartel or Selwood. Whoopee!!

You'd still be pretty happy with a Deledio, Roughhead, Pendlebury or Griffen.

But how about with a McDougall, Sampi, Michael Stevens, Fiora, Fitzgerald, Walsh. Yes, injuries are to blame in some cases but that's something that has to be factored in.

Go down to the next half dozen or so picks and there are even more misses - Cole, Egan, Brandon Hill, Angwin, Molan, Roach. Not to mention most of the rest who are GOPs but are only going to be a small part of the puzzle in putting together a top side. Too many people think a top 10 pick is a recipe for a superstar. It really isn't.

That wasn't you on the SEN quiz today was it Tom, missed out on the Paul Kelly who am i question.
By the way i agree with your last response

Reading Kell's book at the moment, not sure if it was asked on the quiz but was surprised to read what his first number was, does any-one know it.

What I see is round one and two are vital most make the regular 22 care taken only trade for very very required and likely types

Super duper good at picking late rounders that have the hunger that is what I think they mean by NO D'head Policy....

Rocca and Grant did Sydney a favour, they have obviously focused on compensating for late order of picks to concentrate on blokes who want to play in Sydney are stayers and not big heads!

Any comments you wanna make welcome!!!!:) ....with interest;)

Ted Richards was actually traded for our pick 19 (and late round rubbish).

Nick Davis was for our pick 21, but significantly helped by the fact Collingwood feared losing him for nothing in PSD.

We also had to give up Greg Stafford as well, as our first rounder for Hall.

But your point that we have picked up some gems in the late rounds is absolutely correct.

To offset that some of our early picks, 1st & 2nd rd, haven't been howling successes, eg Willoughby (#16). Powell (#28) and even Fosdike (#3) hasn't, IMO, lived up to that billing.

Of course the fact that we have so readily traded early picks means that our recruiters needed to deliver with some late gems.

EDIT: Indeed of a notional top 10 players; C. Bolton, Micky O, Hall, Jolly, McVeigh, Goodes, Malceski, ROK, Kennelly, Kirk only 1 (McVeigh) was actually selected in the draft with our first or second rounder.

Ted was something like 19 + 51, right? We wanted him pretty badly, even though Sheedy rated him very little. Probably could've gone lower.

Thanks for the corrections guys/gals:thumbsu:

Seems though when they go after a player they are relatively generous and know they have quality, especially recently

I was really disappointed with how Willoughby & Powell turned out! Both had big raps (I had seen Powell as jnr and was sensational!)...but both so slight! as were several failures that just never could put on the muscle!

just regarding trade talk, I would use the fact that ryan o'keefe wants to leave to lure kerr from wa. and i heard today that bazza wants out and would like to go to the dogs, maybe a swap for one of their many running players eg griffen if we get lucky. I also think jeff white is a good option if he comes cheap, remember our club policy is never to bottom out. currie is still 2 years away, and jesse white is more of a forward.

Part of the issue was the lumpiness of trade currency available to clubs. A first round pick (it was 18 IIRC - our first round pick as reigning PREMIERS after two clubs claimed priorities at the start of the draft) might have been a tad high but it was rumoured that another club (Carlton?) were willing to give up a mid-second round pick for him. So our pick 18 was all we had available to trump that offer.

It was Ted and pick 54 for picks 19 and 50. I remember thinking how galling it was that Essendon not only managed our first rounder, but also made us let them move 4 places up in the 3rd round.

I couldn't remember the details too lazy to find them !

BUT

Every time I see Ted have a good game I can't help chortle aloud wondering about what Essendon are thinking when they are watching it!:D

I seriously thought he was a dud too in his first season!;)

Chris Egan

COLLINGWOOD has delisted Chris Egan, Sam Iles and Brodie Holland. Holland is a prat, Iles looks good at VFL level but Egan has always promised a lot, was a high draft pick (9 or 10, I think) and is early 20s.

Would anyone here rate him worth pursuing?

Re: Chris Egan

Egan has played 3 games in the last 2 seasons.
Injuries, attitude held him back.

Sure he was a top 10 draft pick, but it was a very surprising pick.
Don't think there are too many tears at the Magpies forum.

Can't see any reason to take him.
