Hugo was not a beanpole ruckman

Yes, but I just reeled off another Norwood ruckman sir. Went off track I guess. Apologies to you.
Let's have a look at Neil Hein vs Parsons from North in the eighties. Neil had tap but Parsons smashed him around the ground.

The one name I took from that list apart from Pruess is Himmelburg

Anyone old enough would remember Sturt's Premiership ruckman Tony 'Doc' Clarkson....now that was a beanpole Ruckman.
Lovely guy. Was the head of the RAH renal unit for many years & was always good person to deal with.

Before my time as a footballer, but my Dad as a Sturt supporter speaks fondly of him... though was a huge Bagshaw fan.

do you know why he's not getting more game time?

I'd say Majak turning into a handy footballer has a bit to do with it, and Goldy rediscovering form.

TL;DR

I don't think it has anything really to do with Preuss, we generally do not give KPP much opportunity when they are younger/inexperienced unless there is a vacancy caused by injury/retirement. It is very difficult for ruck/kpp to get into the side and very easy to get dropped from the side.

Long Version:

If Pagan was coaching the club Goldy would have been traded out at least two years ago and Pagan would have given the rucking duties to Daw and eventually to Preuss. Pagan was a risk taker, Scott isn't. Pagan was a great educator, Scott isn't. Pagan basically raised much of our 90s era team when he was coach of our U19s, he was very good at getting the most out of young players and he demanded high standards. We had a lot of fantastic players come from the dumpster, like Bell, Abraham, Scott, Pike, etc. Despite having a very strong team, Pagan had no hesitation thrusting Harvey into the middle of the side. If Scott was coaching in 96, Harvey wouldn't have debuted for 5 more years.

By contrast Scott is a very stodgy coach who values certain defensive traits, it is why he loves Waite and why he wanted him to go on despite being 35 years old, in terms of forward line defensive pressure, Waite was still very good. That is something that doesn't come naturally to most players at a young age and is something that has to be developed over time. While Preuss loves to tackle and ragdoll players, what you don't see in the highlights reel is what is naturally ball watching, lack of defensive running, slow to get to a position in a defensive zone. These are very unnatural football instincts and it is something that comes from repetition and experience. We focus on what he is good at, Scott looks at the weaknesses that comes from inexperience. It is why he has been extremely conservative when giving any younger KPPs any significant game time.

We have inherited a problem in that we have a lot of important players that have been compromised since the cap on rotations because they never had a great tank to begin with and despite improvement in that area, will never have great tanks. In order to compensate for that, Scott has developed a convoluted game plan which focuses less on one-on-one accountability and utilises a zones, which usually has at least one extra player pushed back to give greater defensive coverage. When you rely on that kind of game plan, you can't really afford to have a number of younger KPPs not executing all the defensive requirements, because that just leaves the opposition in space under no pressure.

When Plan A is working, the team goes okay, when Plan A doesn't work due to execution then it is anarchy and there is little to nothing Scott can do during quarters because he usually needs a major break to attempt to get everyone re-focused on executing the game plan. It is very inflexible and prone to failure, it needs a constant even contribution all over the park, all the time. It has often been let down by KPPs who can't execute so Scott doesn't trust them, and is reluctant to play them.

The problem isn't Preuss or other younger KPP, it is the game plan. You can't rely on such a fragile system. I think we are trying to address the player side of things which is forcing us to play that type of game plan, the restructure of the midfield from last year to this year has already made some improvement, it has been something Scott and the club has been slow to address and I don't think the KPP attitude is going to change until the restructure is complete and the game plan changes to a more natural one.

4 Port players to 1 for the Crows... yet we had a horror camp & season.

Hope there isn't too much movement at Port & they hang on to Wingard as this is not the year we want them to have too many early picks to compete with ours...

You have a coach who values experience over ability?

Every supporter on the Adelaide board knows your pain. Actually, pretty much all you wrote, we can identify with, if only you had said "we have a midfield coach who has survived 5 coaches, never gets moved on and has an obsessive love affair with a mid who gets 16 touches a week" and it would have been scary, really scary.
