What is his contract status at the moment?

Can we get him in a trade?

I would give up anything for him, exactly what we need.

Not sure what his contract is like but I couldnt see him leaving Brisbane. Especially as he is a Queensland native. Maybe we shoud scour the VFL, SANFL and WAFL a la Geelong and Harry Taylor.

Sucko is effective when he is clear, like when he plays off his man at HBF & when win the ball & then feed it to him. Put him on a wing & he'll be cut to pieces by his opponent. His game isn't the gut-runner style of a Bateman/Young or to a lesser extent (for now), Smith.

I agree that Stratts plays well on smalls, but he neither runs nor kicks like Goo or Burgoyne. If Sucko plays then Stratts would have to be forcing out either of Goo/Burgoyne & either a runner or a kicker. That's before we even consider Hodge moving to the backline.

* I actually agree that a KPD like a Mitch Brown would be a welcome addition indeed, I just don't think that adding a 4th stopper is the answer; more likely he'd replace one of the other 3 stoppers in Stratts, Gibbo (no way) or Schoey himself (at least as a defender).
But he's not good enough defensively for my liking. If what you say is correct about kicking under pressure (i don't agree) then maybe he needs to start learning how to play under pressure.Burgoyne should be in the midfiled and not defence. I am so sick of Clarko playing him back there when he is a gun clearance player and is good for a goal, especially when we have a ready made defender in Murphy to play defence. Too much swapping players around from their natural position for my liking.

Anyone want David Rodan? Wants to come back to Victoria apparently. Might cost a bit but wouldn't mind seeing him in the forward pocket. Injury prone is the big worry though. He's also one of the few Port players that consistently carve us up.

No thanks, going to be 29 next season and we still have Whitecross and Osborne to come back into our forward line. What we need to do is have Bailey play ruck, Hale support him and play forward a small bit with Roughie to play forward. I would much prefer that. Some might say we are too top heavy then but i really don't think so.

Thing is we tried the 3 ruck strategy and we looked very slow. This was also with McCauely I think who is a lot more mobile than Big Max. I think our current structure of Hale/Roughy is pretty good. If we can get Gunston to bulk up and become and add an extra string to his bow and become stronger in body contests then that will be a good win for us.

I think we need to take a look at Pup though. He does good things but you can't just rely on your tackling to get you games. He needs to either get more of the ball, crumb some goals or at the very least diminish the impact of the opposition rebounding defenders. I still have my doubts on Ozzie though, unfortunately I think he is cooked. He looked pretty slow prior to his injury this year.

Contracted til the end of next year.

Agreed that he would be perfect for you guys, but I can't see him leaving.

Is he up for Free agency? I don't have that much knowledge on Free agency, havn't really read into it. He seems old enough to qualify?

Yea its probably just me overreacting from the loss and how Mike f*cking Pyke was able to take crucial marks.
Puopolo though is a real worry. Has not played well really at all this year and to be honest his tackling pressure has been nonexistent in a lot of games.

He isn't, no, and he's contracted so it wouldn't work anyways.

I think unless you guys want to have a crack at him after the 2013 season you'd probably want to look elsewhere.

Thanks for the information, much appreciated :thumbsu:.

Even if he was uncontracted pretty sure he has to have played at his current club for 7+ years. I could be wrong though

I think he'll be up for FA next year, but not 100%. He's been with us for 10 or so seasons but didn't play for the first two (inexperience and then glandular fever). I'm not totally sure why he isn't listed as one already, it might be something to do with being contracted or being an AFLQ scouted player.

The next 3 weeks will now be very interesting....some tough calls to be made as we clearly have our deficiencies.....many of them in the mental toughness category!

I just don't know where to start anymore. It's not as simple as securing a gorilla defender. Those problems start by losing the midfield battle unfortunately.

For all those ( including Shane Crawford) who said our current team is better than our 08 team...I seriously have my doubts!

Is our list really as deep as we are led to believe?
Clearly the rest of the competition has caught up with us and we haven't forged ahead since 08.

It would surprise many that Tom Murphy has played 96 Games for Hawthorn. I think that through those 96 games he has showed character so befitting of our club.

He really left nothing on the field in the Prelim. Frankly, he should have been in the team today ahead of Puopolo.

At 26 he is really at his peak, or coming close too and in many teams he would be in their best 22. He is not a playmaker per se, but he is a great stopper, a good strong mark, and a good kick.

Unfortunately I doubt he will get much opportunity in 2013.

A great clubman, in the leadership group, many mates at the club.... unfortunately just not getting a run. Should he follow McGlynn and Kennedy as players to leave for greater opportunity?

Might as well. Not sure he's ever going to be in our best 22 again. Great depth player and you don't want to lose good clubmen, but not sure players want to hang around being 'good depth' players.

Like Browny, Kennedy, and McGlynn, if he did leave, it would be with my best wishes and certainly no hard feelings.

Got my wires crossed, thought you were talking about Rodan. Who was the Brisbane player?

Ah, sorry, Merrett. All the threads must have got moved into this one.

Merrett would command a lot of money to shift to a new club, especially under free agency. Hawthorn would be unlikely to either be able to trade for him or grab him as a free agent.

I think the time of the "big splash" acquisition like a Burgoyne is behind Hawthorn at present. Nobody will be prepared to trade a top-line star to a club that has played off for the premiership. Hawthorn's approach to trade week is to look to add a second-string player not being given an opportunity at his present club who could fill a need as a depth player, potentially.

In other words, I can see more Kyle Cheney-type acquisitions in Hawthorn's next few trade weeks, unless Hawthorn is prepared to give up a "big name" on its list.

He would be unrestricted though wouldn't he, so we would be able to pick him up for less than what Brisbane were offering if he decided to choose the less money for presumably more success.

Would be an impossible trade though if we were to go after him this year

My point is that if Merrett was an unrestricted free agent, he wouldn't just be fielding an offer from Hawthorn and an offer from Brisbane.

As a Collingwood-supporting workmate mentioned in the context of his club losing depth after 2011, if Murphy and others like Gilham leave Hawthorn at the end of the season, Hawthorn's depth in defence becomes exposed. Litherland, Boseley and Kelly are not ready for AFL football. Hawthorn should try very hard to convince Murphy, Gilham and Cheney to stay at the Hawks, else it will need to find depth from other sources.

Would love another big bodied midfielder to help out Sewell and Mitchell. Defencively I'd like to see some more strength put on Benny Stratton, and of course Schoey. Another pacey small forward to put Poppy under some pressure would be great too.

Wellingham type mid would also be great. Not sure what he would cost, but I'm tipping it's a fair bit so not sure what we would have to lose to get.

Oh yea i get you now. Yea i honestly couldn't see it happening. I think we just need to draft one young KPD who actually currently plays defence and who is good in a one-on-one marking contest. Develop him and by the time he is developed we will need him for our best 22. I know its not that easy but i really feel that's what our first draft pick should be used for
