Tom Gillies. We can get him via free agency. Is 22 and stands at 192cm 95kg. Would be a good 2nd or 3rd tall defender. Would come cheap as well. Plus he would be a good fit to replace Gilham who is 28 and injury prone.

He wouldn't be available through free agency. We would have to either trade for him or hope to get him through the preseason draft. I already can see Geelong not choosing to trade with us for any amount and letting him go to the draft so that we don't get him

Seriously #### Gillies. If Rivers is available he would be miles better. Or if you want a real KP sized defender as I said here go after another Geelong VFL defender named Bathie.

Geelong are not like that at the trade table. We are usually very reasonable. Essendon are the ones that are pricks to try and deal with.

Anyone like the look of Stringer in the draft? Big tall midfielder/forward sort of like Pav or Jack Darling. Can play forward and back, and he's pretty handy in the midfield from what I've heard. Versatile, quick and ready made. Only problem is he has had a leg fracture earlier this year.

I doubt he will slip up as far as our pick though. Any draft watchers have any idea who we might pick should we keep our first picks?

Rivers has basically already committed to Geelong, i doubt we could get him now. Personally i would prefer Gilles over Bathie. Only saw a handful of Geelong VFL games and although Gillies had a bit of a poor year i think he is good in a 1-on-1 marking contest plus he can provide a bit of run out of defence and usually uses the ball well on both sides of his body. Plus he is a few years younger.
Is Bathie on the Geelong senior or rookie list, i haven't checked?

Yea very, very doubtful Stringer will fall to our first pick. I honestly don't know who we will target, or more importantly what type of player we will target in the draft for our first pick. I personally haven't minded the look of Jack Leslie, he is a big fella and has played predominantly ruck for Gippsland Power but he is about 197cm from memory and likes to use his size. Once again though I'm not sure where he is in relation to the draft order but i couldn't see him being a first round pick

Ugh god I realllly hope not.

Gillies is an absolute LIABILITY one on one and is only 191cm. Gets badly out bodied and out positioned constantly. His disposal is reasonably safe/sound but you already have plenty of that in your defense. You just do not need him or anyone like him.

Not entirely sure. Probably on our rookie list. As I said he is 25. He is 198cm though, and built very well with a huge frame and long arms. He is very strong one on one and usually reads the ball and positions himself very well. Extremely well for someone who came to AFL so late even. You saw Pyke play a role today after coming from another code. Bathie can do the same.

Yea Rivers is a done deal, expect it to be announced on Monday.

I'll have to watch out for Bathie a bit more if he isn't picked up this year. I probably just didn't notice him because by the sounds of it he was doing his job well.

Why wouldn't you want Rivers btw? Just curious

Just think he's pretty ordinary and not the type of player we need. He got badly man handled by any decent forward this year one on one. He is 28 and not true key position size (not any more anyhow). I would much prefer we put the time in to Bathie and looked to free Taylor up.

Yea i basically agree with all of this, that's why i wouldn't particularly want him either. We really need the guy who wont be beaten in a 1-on-1 marking contest as often as our guys currently do. Just very hard to come across those types of players

I think when we played port they said carlisle/chaplin combination had conceded least goals on big fwd of likes of hawkins/cloke. What is the situation with richmond/chaplin? are we any chance? also, what about essendon's FB who had some injuries? many commentators said he is best defender, had some injuries. Could see both teams offering a midfieder as they have too many defenders and want class midfielders in the likes of savage/ellis... Wasn't chaplin close to best chb a few years back

Jordan Lisle is the perfect size to play on gorilla's and was the only decent key position depth we had before trading him. Personally thought he would have made a good full back!

If we want a key defender we need to look at the state leagues ala Tim Mohr at GWS we won't be able to trade for one I wouldnt have thought!

Question: If we were to land a gorilla defender this off season who exactly does he replace in our backline?

Birchall, suckling to the wing drop either one of Young or Smith.

Would love another big bodied midfielder to help out Sewell and Mitchell. Defencively I'd like to see some more strength put on Benny Stratton, and of course Schoey. Another pacey small forward to put Poppy under some pressure would be great too.

Wellingham type mid would also be great. Not sure what he would cost, but I'm tipping it's a fair bit so not sure what we would have to lose to get.

Hopefully they are looking into Brent Moloney. He's had a shocking season surrounded by bad team and poor team culture. In his interview he seemed keen to follow success and play finals.

Is he worth a look at?

I'd look at dropping Schoey or Stratton tbh. I thought Stratton was really poor yesterday (kicked it out on the full like 3 times) and has generally been pretty poor since coming back from his injury last year. Not sure i'm comfortable playing all of Schoey, Stratton, Gibson, Birchall and whoever we bring in. This is assuming the player coming in is better than Schoey/Stratton, otherwise it's just another Boumann move.

To the original poster, i don't think Lisle is any better than Schoey. Would get destroyed by Cloke/Hawkins/Tippett/etc. just as Schoey has.

Stratton stays in for sure. So underrated for the work he actually does. Why would you not be comfortable playing them all? Stratton and Birchall both play small so its not as if we are going in too tall. Suckling for me is our biggest liability down back and I have said it all year. His kicking can either be the most accurate in the comp or way off, not consistent enough for me and he really doesn't add enough defensively. I would much rather him pushed up to a wing/HFF so he is not a liability in defence.

Really think that next year we need to adopt a man on man approach to all games. I have enough confidence in our players that the majority of them would beat their opponent one on one. Letting Sydney drop the extra man back in defence cost us yesterday after we started to dominate from playing man on man.

I'd say dropping Schoey would be a big mistake(if we got a big defender) one of the problem will have if Schoey start to get dominated there no choice B the option of switching around 2 big defenders would be massive, also we've seen Schoey go froward and can pitch hit their we know he's got elite kicking when freed up, having the second big defender would allow Schoey to take advantage of he's running game, I still believe he be an awesome rebounding defender, that would also kill the opposition second froward.

Given Trade week is basically upon us... I would suggest that we could park this thread an open the main board to Trade talk.... it will at least distract us from the loss?

Dare I say it Quintin Lynch from WCE?

I dont reckon he is a complete ******* - could help structurally by being able to play the second ruck role meaning we can send Roughie back. Cant recall seeing him in defence before which would suggest he is too cumbersome there.

He's already wearing the black and white
