Will Phillips last in the running? That’s not good enough. Concerns grow

Let's hope he doesn't end up like that other inside mid we took high who could never run that well called Ben Cunnington.

What a bust he was.

Yeh? Because all inside bulls finished at the top of running groups.. If you took “running” groups into consideration we’d have a team of absolute superstars. Where do you think all our prime ball movers over the years finished in running groups? Where was Cunners best running group finish? Have a spell you bell end.

You arent a footballers bung hole or you were the soft cheap outside winger, still not a footballers bunghole. Ship off
I’d argue Cunners was an amazing football despite his athletic limitations not because of them. If he had a bit more pace and endurance he would have been in multiple all Australian/ Brownlow conversations.

Phillips also isnt the contested beast that Cunners is (and may not ever be) so will need to develop an endurance base to get to contest to contest and not be gassed at the end of games - he’s hardly alone there though!

I'm not familiar with Taylor Swift or the song in question, it's probably safer around these parts to use musical references from one hit wonders circa 1978 - 1993. As for North, in the words of Yaz and the Plastic Population "the Only Way is Up Baby."
This is serious mum

There isn’t a great deal of difference between neale and phillips. If you watched neale in his first couple of years you would know that. You would also know that he isnt fast or an aerobic beast and yet is arguably the best inside mid in the comp.

Now, Cunners didnt need to be quick to be considered an AA. He was absolutely the best inside mid in the comp with his limitations. Cunners didn’t smash it in his first 4 or 5 seasons anyway. I wonder if we dug through the cunnington page, would we find the same arguments being proposed as they are Will? ****ing LOL. Abso ****ing lutely

Im definitely a Phillips believer. I’ve posted as much in his thread multiple times.

Reaching Cunnington heights is no mean feat though re contested play notwithstanding Cunnington amazing vision and ridiculous kicking skills off one step. I think Phillips will be an excellent player but not sure he’ll match Neale/Cunnington contested abilities. I think he has at least Cunnington covered for pace - he just needs to develop that endurance base which will come in time.

Im comparing inside midfielder fitness compared to the rest of the midfielders. Thats the only comparison I make, also that Neale is the end product of what Phillips can achieve.

Cunners was a Diesel Williams type player. Probably the last of their type.

All I am saying is you wont see Lachie Neale breaking records on the time trials or at the end of sessions. Thats all im sayin.

Super long bow there. Cunners strength was elite. Having said that, Philips can at least move ok between the arcs.

Do you remember Ben's first two or three years?

If it helps, he didnt seem to be hampered in anyway, him and Lmac would have clocked close to 8k plus in running so I dont think fitness will be an issue. Could just be load management.
Load management in during a specific week-long interstate trip?

Doubtful.

Longmire did fairly well at Full Back as a young bloke and then returned to the forward line and his career as a goal kicker took off.

Had to look it up for confirmation as it was ages ago (from Wikipedia):

His first official match for North Melbourne was in the 1988 season against Footscray with a four-goal performance, but he struggled after that and near the end of the season coach John Kennedy Sr. moved him to full-back. He did well in that role during the 1989 season, holding Tony Lockett to five kicks in Round 14, but North's lack of key position players in attack saw him moved back to the forward line in August.[5]

The 1990 season saw Longmire jump to the top of the tree: at only nineteen years of age, he kicked 98 goals and won the Coleman Medal as the league's leading goal kicker (and the youngest player to have done so
2 goals 9 I think it was in the last game of the year at VFL Park. I was there, and devastated not to run out on the ground t celebrate!!

He’s covering plenty of K’s whilst he’s not in the main group. There doesn’t seem to be a helluva lot wrong with him physically. And he’s reportedly cut a fair bit off his time trial results.

Just got back from training - Bloody hot but the boys were cracking in.
Few notes

Jai and Bull love to get the rigs out

Chom one of the first out. Just doing run throughs and some agility work on the ankle. Participated in the majority of the session.

Can confirm the TT was there but was purely doing walking laps with Curtis Taylor for about 45 minutes. CT mentioned a slight niggle in his back but should be back soon. Just on TT, didn't realise how big he actually is in person. Hope he can get over whatever is niggle is soon.

Rehab group consisted of LDU, Arch, Lmac, Fish, Geroge and Griff. All of those boys did some separate drills, mainly just light kicking with LDU and Lmac doing constant laps with increased and decreased intensity. George, Fish and Arch were doing them later one. Probably going for a good hour it seemed.
Griff was just doing constant runs with agility work.

Everything Sheez does is all class, kicking off both feet, one touch player, evasiveness. Highly doubt we will see any second year blues from him.

After warm ups the broke into groups of around 10 and did some 5 v5 drills in confined spaces. Aim seemed to be to draw a player before giving off and then breaking clear for a shot on goal. Bull was really vocal in the group I was watching. Sheez couldnt be touched. Warlord is a killer.

2 on 1 kick to kick from 50 into the goal square. Chom was marking everything against Biggie and Goater while in the opposite group, Sheez was getting the better of Colby and Hards.

They did some wrestling drills after this, one person having to protect the ball and the other trying to get it off them. Jai goes very hard here and you can tell his fitness is at another level, was up against Powell and after a break, Powell was bent over catching his breath, Jai was ready to go again. Really does lead from the front in everything he does. Warlord was another who impressed me here. Just does everything with intensity.

Next up was some match sim. Short 5 minute burst. No real centre square work as it was just kick one way or another to start it off, or it would be from a boundary throw in. Jai was great around stoppages, stood out the most imo.
Ford cracks me up, really nice user and composed, him and Paul Curtis collided head on in a 50 / 50, both were fine, Ford must not have liked something as ran a good 15 meters just to go give Curtis a big him and shoulder.

Scott just doesnt not stop running, absolute freak in that regard, especially in the heat. Ball use was generally good.

Dylan Stephens was really nice in match sim, finished off a could of nice link up plays with goals on the run from about 45. Something I feel the team has lacked in for quite a while. Didnt realise who he was until he kicked the second.

Chom played about 10 minutes of match sim, can confirm played down back and looked fantastic. One on Ones, tick. Reading the play, leaving his man for a big intercept that lead to a goal to Paul Curtis.
Pink also defended really well and his ball use wasnt any worse than one Ben Mckay. Short kicks all found there mark.

Corr - Can confirm what looked like a really bad ankle, happened right in front of me. Couldnt put any weight and was telling the trainers is was really bad. Lets see what comes out from that. Hopefully not as bad as first impressions but didn't look good.

Colby - Boy of boy does he look classy. Played down back and used the ball perfectly. Great give and goes, always looking to link up. Might be one sided but damn if that side isnt exquisite.

Dursma - Didnt see a huge amount but will be a big boy in a couple of years, what he did do was classy though, very one touch, especially when marking.

Last notes. Team seem very vocal, really tell each other where to go. Also not afraid to give each other advice or constructive criticism on the spot. To me that's a sign of a good team. Hopefully it all clicks.

Would have love to have provided more insight but some players I just didnt recognize, play happening on the other side of the field or players in different numbers.

Promising signs.

Feel free to ask any questions.
I was at training too, and cant add much more than what was written here. I did speak with Corr after training, and he said he would get a scan!! Didnt seem to happy about the injury.
Of note for me, I met some of the players at a members function on Wednesday evening, and all of those whom I met made an effort to come and say gday again, especially Sheezel and Duursma. They are impressive young guys.
I reckon we had about 60-100 supporters out watching today, which I thought was very good.

*in ey, he’s a pup inside midfielder. Who is making excuses? His first season was in 2021. LOL you lot jerk off jy simpkin. Says it all really
I most certainly do not.

So he's had 3 years. Soon he'll have had 4... how many years did Dec Watson, Josh Williams, Jack mahony, Charlie ham, Jacob Edwards, Flynn perez, kyron Hayden, will walker etc etc get?

What a bust he was.
That's not a relevant comparison.

It was evident early that Cunners had strength (to not get pushed off the ball and fend off), could mark overhead, and could kick goals.
We haven't seen any of that from Will.

I hope he makes it because of the rich draft capital we expended to acquire him, but the signs so far don't look good.

If you think any one of those guys is any where near the same class as Phillips then you really need to take a break from pretending you know something about football.
