Pickett was one player I really wanted that year. At one time he was ranked in the 30s. I couldn't believe he was ranked so low.

I wanted him too but after two years languishing in our shitbox forward line and enduring multiple coaches, I reckon Port would have come knocking and I wouldn't have blamed him for going.

Which is why it was absolutely dumb list management to not go after some proven key defenders after McKay left.

I’m hopeful on Pink, but Biggie isn’t a key defender.

Having an injured Logue and injury prone Corr as our best defenders was complete list mis-management.
I think thats a wait and see.

If we have nailed our assessment of Pink and what Comben can do as a backman then it was a brilliant piece of list management.

Did he though? He didn’t play up the ground all that much last year. Across half back he was still able to link up up the ground and provide an impact.

I thought that he looked good in the few centre bounces that he attended. And he was great when he pushed forward late against WC and Sydney.

The two late goals against Sydney, the centreing kick to LDU against WC, followed by the brilliant goal that the ump incorrectly called a point... he was incredible.

I think that Sheezel is more than just a good, steady, accumulator and ball user. He is also a dynamic match winner. It's rare to be both.

I want him to be all over the ground, impacting the game in as many ways as possible.

This was the same shitbox forward line that kicked 22 goals to put Poorta out of finals at the end of that year. Crazy how it all fell apart five games later. Four years of hell we've had. The world hasn't done much better either.

Going to be an interesting watch with Sheez. A lot of similarities to Daicos first two years. A lot were suggesting to just leave him half back, but he went up another level as a mid and probably should have won the Brownlow.

I agree with the sentiment that we don’t have the proven quality in the back half to move him up the ground, yet. Equally, if a couple of Bergman, Goater, Fisher and Colby are able to take the step, it’d be worth exploring through the year.

I’m firmly in the “let’s see how we go” before considering moving him.

Although I’d clearly prefer to have Corr and Logue playing im less interested in who is playing behind the ball when compared with whatever defensive structure we employ.

If our midfield can take the necessary steps forward and we can actually apply some pressure at the source and in the front half the personal becomes less important when you are in a building phase which we clearly are.

Also gives a few potential fringe defenders a decent audition to see if they are going to feature in the long term.

Hell, Port won 15 odd games with Allir and a band of fringies behind the ball.

I’m more interested/concerned with getting our structures actually right so we are set up behind the ball better and we are applying enough pressure to make it dirty ball that we have to defend.

I find it hilarious that people suggest we should have gone after the best available key defenders this trade period just gone when it was patently obvious that there were no good key defenders available, and hence Essendon turning Ben McKay into a pick 3 compo.

Alir is probably the next tier behind May and Moore etc so he's still very good. Port also have a lot of decent HB players and general defenders.

I’m wondering with Colby doing a fair bit of time at Half back, are they hoping he can have an impact and take sheezels position across there early on to allow sheez to play further up the ground!

Well let’s see what’s under the hood with our boys:
LMac
Bergs into his 3rd year
Goater see above
Dawson
Pink
Biggie
Charlie
Fisher
Sheez
Jacko
Bailey Scott

I’m not pretending this is our premiership back 6 but it will give the coaching staff a great opportunity to see who can adapt to the structures under AFL pressure.

Aliir is terrible as a 1v1 defender.

Another very good and sensible post. We, like a few other clubs, no doubt had a good look to see who's available, at what cost , the age of the players in question and if we rate them. The plain fact is, we did good, at what we got, we did not rate some of those key defenders that people keep throwing out there and probably for good reason.

I understand we haven't got Chris Mew, Ross Glendinning or Darcy Moore down there, but maybe, just maybe we'll be okay down there. Get our structure right, confidence up, mids working hard, up and down the ground and everyone doing their bit, fitness at a new level and you'll start to see the development and advancement of our team going forward.

What I hope is not lost on people is the enthusiasm, eagerness and excitement this young group of top talent has brought to our group, from what I'm hearing, this early, out on the ground, its very real. That's not to say there's not a mountain of work to be done, but as you've seen with senior players posting not only best times on the track but smashing their pb, that its now a great and fun time to be a North Melbourne supporter!

One more thing too add, when Collingwood won the 2010 premiership and arguably should have won back to back, their coach at that time was Mick Malthouse, a great coach, who the players not only loved but such was their respect for the man, they would have walked on broken glass if he had wanted them to, he was much more than just a coach, a real father figure and its no surprise that when he got the bullet for the "golden child", Nathan Buckley, Collingwood would not taste success for another 13 years.

It took 2023s version of Mick Malthouse, Craig McRae to get them that cup, what's that got to do with it? Everything, he's such a good young coach, father figure, modern day connoisseur of players and talent and of how he's moulding them into a team who has got each others backs, Craig is also very good at analyzing opposition teams.

This is now what Alastair Clarkson is doing, this has what has been missing, young lads sometimes need that father figure as well as a coach to help them grow not only as a footballer but as a person. The boys look for a guide and with Alastair's record in the coaching ranks as one of the best of all time, he has that experience and knowledge as well as being that father figure. They will come to him with not only football matters but other matters outside of football, this is where the relationship between player and coach can go to that next level.

I can't stress how important this is, once this bond grows, you'll see it out on the ground regardless of wins/losses, coaches like Malthouse, McRae, Clarkson and the late Allan "yabby" Jeans are/were great coaches/father figures that players would do anything for them.

Why does everyone want to push Sheezel into the midfield? He just won a best and fairest in his first year playing as a half back.

We haven’t had a consistently damaging half back since Jess Sinclair. I’ll be more than happy if Sheez stays back.

Having a damaging half back is one of the key pillars to any successful AFL side.
I’m not sure how reliable the reports were or what the positional significance of McKercher running drills in the backline was, but I am bloody excited by the idea of Sheez, Kerch and Fisher running through there.

It has been a dead-zone for a decade.

We are allowed to have more than one competent half back at once.

I’m sure Clarko might be liking the thought of having two extremely damaging players on both sides of defence, so it doesn’t matter which exit we take next year…

McKercher will bring a different type of speed and intensity than even Sheez did last year

Lot of responsibility on Colby's shoulders, stepping into the shoes of the great Aaron Hall

No mention of Corr in the Herald Sun injury round up…
