Round 21 - August 1st. Tuesday training.

I wasn't totally sure what time they were starting. Got there at 9, but nothing was going on. cars were there, so they would be training but was just a matter of when.
Got word it was then at 10:30, so went over to the Brumble cafe at the G for some breakfast, then came back just as they were about to begin. It finished up around 12.

They came out going through a banner. On my side, it was the banner that was used for the VFLW Grand Final... but on the other side was dedicated to La Trobe Financial signing on for another 4 years. But they went through with some energy and spark, so maybe there is a bit to this exercise than just about the sponsor.

There was a real focus about improving the connection between our backs - mids- forwards. They did a drill I've never seen before; when they split up into line groups and worked on the ball movement from one end to another.
There was also focus on ball movement, clearing from stoppage.
There was some match play as well, which the squad was split up into blacks, whites and players in yellow vests. They rotated teams, one team would have to wait their turn, so they would do goal kicking or other different things while the other two teams were in play.

There was no signs of what changes may come, not in this session at least. That'll have to wait until Thur session to see who may be dropped, or who keeps their spot.

Fin Macrae was back out on the track after his surgery. No sling like he had on during the VFL game, but just taping around his finger. Did a bunch of running sessions with Charlie Dean.

The fact that they did a drill you've never seen before suggests that Fly still has a few tricks up his sleeve.

Always coming up with something new, our Fy. Always trying to improve things.

The more likely possibility is this is another doomsaying straw at which you clutch.

Not at all

Most of you just seem overly defensive more than anything

All I said was "it's possible"

Fly himself has said "Teams keep trying to take things away from us" and I'd argue that it's showing at the current moment with the way our matches have been playing out.

So yeah, it's possible that teams have in fact "figured us out" and we're winning mostly on pure talent and belief right now?

But it's also possible that we're still tinkering and experimenting and just waiting for finals to start before we go into overdrive. Again, something I've said recently which you've chosen to conveniently ignore in your quest to attack anyone who dare question our premiership credentials.

No, what you said was "very possible", i.e. the likely scenario.

Would have thought the "also" would have alluded to the idea that both things are equally possible

"Fly has tricks up his sleeve"
"Fly is desperately trying to find something new"

Both are equally possible, hence...."also"

Fly is desperately trying to find something new is pretty unlikely, if we play our best it doesn't matter if teams know what we are going to do, our record shows that our best is good enough, just need to do it in the finals

Then why didn't you say that? Nor make any comment about the possibility of Fly having tricks up his sleeve?

I feel like you're intentionally being obtuse as to the obvious meaning people will infer from your post.

Maybe because I don't want to repeat myself?

Maybe just try and take posts on face value rather than looking for something that's not there hmmm?

Ah, okay. You didn't really mean that he's 'desperately' trying to find something 'new'.

I get it now.

Not really 🤔
How about, 'it is highly possible he is looking for something new', given that I believe the top teams and even Carlton have worked out our system.

Whether the opposition can do it again is another question but given that the coach plans for scenarios he should be looking for something new/different.

The original post was about how he had tricks up his sleeve because there were new things being tried. This seems like a pretty -- too -- optimistic reading. So i gave an equal and opposite pessimistic out. To balance it out.

I don't mean it literally. It's ironic.

I just think 'good' coaches would always be evolving and probably bringing new things every week/session. Fly pretty much says this in every press conference. Win/lose or draw. And particularly a coach such as Fly, who is known as a highly regarded development coach. It would be in his DNA to continually try new things.

The most common reason for a coach to introduce a new drill is just trying to bring some variety to training.
