With most clubs calling back their first-to-fourth-year players to begin pre-season training on Monday, we’ve nominated a player from each team in that age bracket who looks set to have a huge 2023.

NORTH MELBOURNE

In what was another wretched season for the Kangaroos, bright spots were few and far between. But amid the gloom, one of those sparks of encouragement was Paul Curtis. The 19-year-old kicked 12 goals from 15 games, and averaged 10 touches (five contested) and three tackles, to provide some life in attack. The talented youngster knows where the big sticks are, as evidenced by his three-goal performance in North’s memorable win over Richmond, and with a bit more direction and leadership around him, he could regularly provide headaches for opposition teams.

Ronny Lerner's standard Captain Obvious article oozes condescension when he gets to our bloke. He can **** right off.

Daniel Cross? Has he been involved long or has he just started?

Tarryn is looking lean AF
Not sure that's something to celebrate. He was lean when he first arrived. Looks to be just as skinny. I know he's tough as nails and with his frame he'll always look lean but it'd be nice if he added size to his frame. Be an animal and hard to compete against if he did.

Strength and conditioning coaches with some more question marks.

FOUR TAKEAWAYS FROM NORTH MELBOURNE TRAINING

1. NEW FACES Alastair Clarkson launched into his first session on the track as North Melbourne coach as the club’s first to fourth-year players returned for the official start of pre-season training. Decked in shorts, long sleeves and a blue Kangaroos cap, the four-time Hawks’ premiership coach had the whistle around his neck and was expressive on the field, revving up the players with a few claps after some drills. Fremantle recruit Darcy Tucker joined the young players returned, but spent the session in the gym as he rehabs from knee surgery at the end of the home-and-away season. Fellow recruit and former Docker Griffin Logue is expected to be at the club later this week.

2. WHO WAS SHARP Son-of-a-gun Jackson Archer impressed to win the Kangaroos’ 2km time-trial at the start of the training session. Archer – the son of club legend Glenn – showed he was intent on making an impact in his second season in the AFL to take out the honours on day one of the pre-season, while Jack Mahony, Miller Bergman and Bailey Scott also finished strongly in the time-trial.

3. BACK EARLY Skipper Jack Ziebell led a group of senior players to make an early start to their pre-season campaign, which is not officially due to start until December 5. After recovering from shoulder surgery late in the season, Ziebell helped set the tone for the younger players by joining in most drills. Key backman Ben McKay, Jaidyn Stephenson, Tarryn Thomas, Tristan Xerri and Aiden Bonar also took the chance to make an early start to their pre-season campaigns.

4. EASING IN Star midfielder Luke Davies-Uniacke was another to make an early appearance at training, but he just ran laps of the Arden St ground for the session. But the Kangaroos said there was no injury concern and Davies-Uniacke was just easing into the start of pre-season. Will Phillips continues to make progress after battling bouts of glandular fever during the year, but remains on a modified program as he slowly builds up his training loads.
Thank you

Nah he was legitimately carrying weight last season. As in fat.

Good to see how he has come back. Looks real good.

Would be unreal if he forced his way into the middle.

Wonder if Clarko will move Stephenson back to the forward line like his days at Collingwood or persist with him going through the middle or hbf.

Streaming off a wing, HB, middle, hf. I don’t care where, I just want to see him fit, firing and happy.

He was carrying some but I'll have to give it the eye test. I'll head down to pre-season and have a look. If I see a strength and power drop off I'll be booing Kevin White and James Wiseman

Credit where credits due for Archer.

Will definitely not die wondering with his endeavour and professionalism in the off season.

To take out the 2km time trial after supposedly putting on 5kg muscle, in only his second preseason, is a phenomenal effort.

There were a few that wondered why he was taken as a primary selection and not rookie listed. Really hope he gets reward for effort and can nail down a starting 22 spot this year.

I wonder how much his time has improved since last preseason

Look how low TT's hand gets guiding the ball to his foot - beautiful.
That is such a great photo.

Perfect form.

Everything about that photo is right.

Love it that Arch won that. He'll surprise a few I reckon.

His first 20 minutes of AFL footy was quality.
