Sorry for delay.

I went down for a look today and was fairly impressed with what I saw. From what I saw the general skills were pretty good given the very average windy, slippery conditions.

I got there at 9 and there was no action until 9:45.

My observations from the session:

- 3 votes to Monkey, arrived in style on motorbike about 20 minutes after all the players. If only he would pass on some diet tips to Phoenix. Monkey would have to be close to 150kgs, Spicer close to 50kgs and maybe should be a jockey.

- Drury will play games in 2023, he is very mature bodied for a small fella. His skills are very good. He did sit out a bit of the session but it’s hard not to notice a ranga and when I was participating he looked like he belonged. Love the previous comparison on here with Patch, even without the red hair he has similarities. He is the perfect mix of footballer and athlete.

- I noticed Corr there today but didn’t see him training, I did see Warlord head to the second oval so maybe he joined him there?

- Lazarro is a worry for mine, he hardly looked like a bloke trying to impress and put his hand up for a spot. The strength and conditioning bloke running the earlier drills was yelling at him on several occasions to push through and yelled it the second time so everyone noticed.

- Chom looked great, he moves so well for a big guy. I feel he could be huge for us this year if he stays fit. He seemed to be clunking his marks today and the conditions were atrocious, damp and slippery.

- I agree with observation of Clarko and TT, plenty of love there. I also noticed Clarko yelling to bull on the way out “bull, shirt off”….. the rapport he has with the players is like none I’ve seen before.

- TT was so sharp, his balance and agility is next level. Hopefully the extra work getting put into him is for a role in the middle this year. He just glides and is so smooth with each touch.

- Our new ruckman looks way off, I hope there is a lot of improvement in him. I remember someone mentioning he looks out of place, seeing him today I agree.

- Young Arch has had a very big preseason, his bulked right up. His upper body growth should help him compete in the air and contest.

- Cooper is a decent size for a first year player, his body seems very well developed. Compared with Harry S he is huge.

- LDU and Cunners will be our best 2 mids barring injury, exciting to have them both fit in the same side.

- the vibe was really good, all staff and players were very upbeat…. Some drills just for fun were good to see, the soccer drill keeping the ball up was a good watch.

Fire questions at me, I will try my best to answer.
So TT was doing full drills, not just spending most of it doing laps?

What was the focus of the drills you saw?

The difference in he vs JHF really does fuel the good family (dare I say it) private school recruiting narrative.

On one hand you've got a kid who has embraced moving to Melbourne, studying & working in a part time capacity at one of the big four. On the other hand you've got JHF.
At least back in Adelaide can go back to stacking milk crates in a part time capacity.

The other I forgot to mention that stood out to me was Young. His skills were pretty sharp, pretty good user of the ball. He was one who looked to be giving his all, one who probably knows next year is huge for his football career and hopefully one to thrive under Clarko.

Yep he was involved in all the drills I saw, certainly not getting managed from an injury perspective. The management of him earlier most likely fitness related I’m guessing.

There seemed to be a strong emphasis on basic skills, short kicking and hit ups. As stated with other sessions there seemed to be a mixture of basic skills drills but completed at an intensity to address fitness.

Daniel Cross was handing out the gps monitor bibs which I guess they do at every session to track workrate and all the other metrics. The other high performance bloke was good at calling out anyone not switched on or taking it easy, he spoke with an accent.

Griffen and George W were running laps doing drills away from the main group on the other oval. I think Corr was over there as well as I saw him before training started but he didn’t join the main group.
Ah yep heard griff on the radio the other day saying he had a few niggles from the season so easing in and in full training after the Xmas break

Cheers mate.

Did you note anything about Howe, Shiels and Tucker?

I’m intrigued by what on field plans Clarko has in store for those three, assuming there are some.

Since when we’re you into young boys??

They were all there, one thing I noted about the ex hawks is they are team first guys. You can see the value they bring to the team and the benefit of having them around our younger side. Both getting around the younger guys, plenty of pats on the back and encouragement. Howe looked quick in a few of the drills, I’m interested to see where he is used. He has played many roles during his time at the Hawks. Shiels seems the kind who will make a decent coach, from what I’ve heard his a well respected intelligent bloke.

I saw tucker before training started and thought he would be bigger for some reason, didn’t notice him much on the track.
