this is better journalism than anything Christiane Amanpour ever reported. :)

oh, and Godzke, re. owing clubs money ... this whole myth Arsenal got Cesc for free and the precious Barcelona had a player stolen? yeah, we had to cancel the remaining money they still hadn't paid us for Overmars and Petit (because they couldn't afford it and spend beyond their means ala Leeds) just to shut their whining up. true story.

Cesc Fabregas is keen to conclude his move to Barcelona as quickly as possible, according to his father.

The Arsenal captain, who is currently training with Spain’s World Cup squad, told Arsene Wenger of his desire to return to his boyhood side during face-to-face talks last week. Barcelona are thought to be preparing an initial bid of £30 million for a player they lost for nothing when he left their academy seven years ago, however it is thought Arsenal could hold out for as much as £40 million.

Cesc’s father, Francesc Fabregas, has reiterated his son’s desire to leave London and says he hopes the clubs can come to an arrangement quickly. “The negotiations between Arsenal and Barcelona are going to be very long,” he said. “Both parties are going to have to sit down several times because the matter is complicated. Cesc is now focused on the Spanish national team, but he wants the signing to be closed as soon as possible.”

Fabregas wants to stay on good terms with Arsenal, who have nurtured his development since he left Barcelona as a 16-year-old, and is particularly keen not to damage his relationship with Wenger. However, he is prepared to submit a written transfer request if necessary. The main sticking point of any deal is likely to be the transfer fee with Arsenal unwilling to allow their captain to leave without a struggle. “I don’t know how this is going to end up, but I think that we need to respect the decision and the will of the player,” Fabregas Sr said.

“Cesc has always responded to Arsene Wenger with his work and we are also grateful to Arsenal because they have made our son a man. We only want this to end soon.

“At the moment he has a contract with Arsenal. I get the feeling the English club don’t want to sell him but in end will allow Cesc to leave.”

The 23-year-old has known of Barcelona’s interest for several months and his reasons for wanting to leave London are primarily footballing ones, having rejected the opportunity to discuss more lucrative moves to Real Madrid and Manchester City. While the prospect of being closer to his family and friends by returning home is appealing, his main concern is success on the pitch and winning the biggest honours. He views this as a doubtful proposition at Arsenal, who have not won a trophy for five years. A 2005 FA Cup winner’s medal is the only club honour in his collection.

If he does leave, I know us Arsenal fans are like "Should be at least 50m+" in which we are probably right considering the prices going around today, but if he does get sold....I seriously think it will be like 35m max and maybe plus a player. Yucky.

<Insert Rnub>but but but but where does Cesc say it? but but but but he hasn't and therefore doesn't want to leave Arsenal</Insert Rnub>

Bidding, as I understand it, has started at 30m GBP. Arsenal want, naturally (i'd be the same in their situation) want 50m+. I think 40-45 is the range where a negotiation will be made.

Arsenal will probably demand Yaya (Wenger has always been a fan but apparently Yaya won't want to be a pawn in any deal, and facours Chelsea) or Assulin (been chasing him hardcore but then again he's out of contract so they can sign him on a free anyway). Henry? Unlikely, but who knows.

I wonder if they'd be interested in Jeffren. I'd say he's worth 5m GBP (possibly more). 22 yo and fairly explosive. Has shown more than Giovanni Dos Santos imo.

40m + Jeffren would be a fair deal imo. I'd thrown in Jonathan Dos Santos on a 2-year loan but with the midfield talent they've got coming through I doubt they'd be interested.

If it were up to me, I'd tell Cesc stiff shit for signing an 8-year contract and look for a cheaper signing. I wanted a LF and we got one. As far as I'm concerned, any other signings are either reinforcements, not needed and/or too expensive. But the Catalans stick up for their own I guess.

If I were weighing up a job offer in Oz I'd expect my ma and da to come down heavily in favour of it as well. But I've other factors to consider.

Actually there's a thought. Is Fabregas married?
I've told you and TIG already, he goes out with Bojan. :p

This really annoys me about footballers today. If he wants to leave, grow a pair and put in a transfer request. None of this I don't want to but I will if I have to bollocks.

Sure you can't play the "I never wanted to leave but the club forced me into it" card when you do eventually make the move, and sure you might have to give up that loyalty bonus (ha ha) but at least show a bit of honesty about it all.

You couldn't be further from the truth if you tried.

Footballers are too readily wanting to swap clubs for money and ignore loyaltly completely. What Fabregas is trying to do is respectfully leave the club. Indeed, he has signed an upgrade on his contract which he shouldn't have done should he wanted to leave a month or so ago when Arsenal pushed the paper under his nose. However, the way he's gone about this suggest he wants to leave Emirates with his head held high and with the respect of the Arsenal fans.

I don't know, getting family, friends and agents to leak stories while you keep your nose clean trying to be the golden boy doesn't seem a very respectful way of manufacturing your way out of a club to me.

If it was a City player, I'd much prefer he be honest, come out and say that he thinks his future is better served elsewhere and put in the transfer request if he genuinely wants to go.

I don't. I'd have more respect for him if he just said he wants to go. We all know he wants to go. I'm not sure it's best for his career but it would be better for Arsenal if we have players who want to play for the club. We have had a rubbish mentality for years now and players wanting to play for bigger clubs is a big part of that.

if he wants to go then go, whatever. as long as we get a big fee. we don't jack with him and we won't jack without him so *shrug* just continuing our fine descent into midtable Spursocrity. :thumbsu:

although it'll probably be like one of those facebook groups ... "hi I'm from Barcelona and I'm going to tap up one of your players LOL jk I'll never pay you."

lame.

We all know this moves about one thing. Im sick of being kicked, Wah wah. Cesc is just taking the cowards way out. Im not really sure Arsenal need to sign a direct replacement. Its time for Nasri to step up to the plate. If i was Wenger id grab the 40 mill and get in Angel Di Maria. Im not sure I can think of a more downright entertaining player in the world today (ie. his goal yesterday). Hes cocky, ridiculous and good to boot. A midfield of

Arshavin Nasri Song Di Maria
Chamakh Van Persie

Looks good to me. Fair bit of depth in CM overall with Denilson/Ramsey putting pressure on Nasri for his spot. Another DCM couldnt hurt though. Diame maybe

Seriously couldnt think of a player less suited to tough physical EPL style football than Jeffren. Loan him out to another La Liga club.
He's not that fragile, but it would be interesting to see how he copes in a more physical league.

Needs game time so I guess loaning him out to another liga team would be the best option.

I propose an embargo on signing players I haven't heard of.

I see your point there and he should eventually come clean and just say it. But he is trying to be as diplomatic as possible with the club, which I respect.

Pretty easy to say when you support the club benefiting from said "diplomacy".

If the shoe was on the other foot, Barca fans would be screaming murder.

I don't believe Cesc is going about this the right way. As the Arsenal fans have said, Cesc should just come out and say it. It's the same with Fernando Torres. If he wants to leave, tell the club and the fans and something will be worked out to benefit both parties.

But for god sake has the testicular fortitude to actually do that.

agree with above post
will be absolutely gutted when (seems inevitable) cesc leaves. have watched him become one of the best players in the epl.
but like every arsenal fan i want fair compensation.
45 mil sounds nice although wenger will do nothing with it no doubt
should be aiming to get lloris from lyon because im sick of watching our keepers fail on a consistent basis.
