Jenn, girls and boys playing the same sports is great, until puberty hits, then you can’t.

I’m all for people doing what makes them happy, and I’m completely for equal rights and opportunities, but physiological differences will always distort things.

I presume we are waiting for puberty to hit 400kay.

I meant the men’s only sport and the women’s only sport. That is a social construct, and built around the physical differences and “need” to protect the “fragile female”. I get that (though not necessarily agree with it), but what if girls had been allowed to play the same sports as boys from the same age?

Like tennis and golf?

It has been generations that boys and girls have had the same opportunities/coaching as they are growing up.

If we had combined competitions there wouldn't be a female in the top 500 in either sport. This would be disastrous as females would drop off in droves as they wouldn't be competitive at the elite level = no money/career.

It has nothing to do with "protecting the fragile female" in non contact sports, maybe 50 years ago this was the reason but not these days with professional sports.

Everyone has the right to change their gender but for sports where strength and endurance are important (which are most sports) the science, the optics and the pub test for transgender athletes who have not had gender reassignment surgery is wrong. I feel sorry for them but the bottom line is that it's not a level playing field.
The case for those who have had orchidectomy is more debatable as some of the natural advantages have diminished.

The sporting world needs to be careful. Political Correctness acceptance should never extend to blatant physiological differences that provide an unfair advantage. By removing gender reassignment as a compulsory rule to be a transgender sports person it is going to be taken advantage of by men who simply can't make the grade at the sport as a male and want the money and fame. Hannah is an interesting example, she is likely to become this poster child for transgender women in the AFLW and she is likely to earn more money then any other player. In the rush to allow her to play, has anyone stopped to think..what if she decides to be a man again as soon as her career is over? If women could turn themselves into men and dominate male sport as easily I'd say fair game.

What I never see in the arguments for is people justifying within any satisfaction why biological women should be placed at a physical disadvantage. TBH I am of the opinion a physiological born man needs to stay in mens sport at any level. There simply is too much of an advantage for it to be fair. Biological women should not be penalised or placed at a physical disadvantage because the sporting world is too afraid to stand up to PC Penny and her band of doo gooders attempting to rid the world of anything that may be seen as unfair. The harsh reality is these people are generally outsiders, not the participants within a sport but they simply expect sport to reflect the political correctness stance of equality. But at the same time this is not equality, its placing biological born women against men who are statistically more likely to be biologically superior in the attributes required for the sport.

Think Cricket. The fastest womens bowler bowls under 130km. This means that 99% of all women cricketers are likely to have only ever faced bowling well under that throughout their development. Now picture a transgender 6'3 fast bowler who can throw it down in the mid to high 130s low 140s with ease. It would be the equivalent of facing Glen McGrath one over to Brett Lee the next with having never ever faced anyone of that pace ever. Or vice versa, a transgender batter whose played a decent level of cricket against men and all of a sudden faces 120km/h at best trundlers. They will never get out not to mention the far heavier bat they can use.

Bottom line it's a huge disadvantage and there are loop holes being created in the name of PC equality. For those that argue I am wrong, well we are only at the beginning of seeing transgender sports people in womens sport. It could be a very slippery slope if world sports bodies keep relaxing regulations because they are scared.

Found it interesting so far, still in two minds about the gender reassignment surgery question.

Can totally understand her saying it is not relevant and she doesn't have to "prove" anything.

But on the other hand I feel that having a penis doesn't make you a man but if you do have a penis you can't be a woman. That probably is an old fashioned view and I probably haven't explained it to well.

Mike (as does most in here) find the AFL stance inconsistent, no AFLW but VFLW is OK.

Hannah is planning to nominate for the AFLW draft this year, hope someone picks her up and gives her a go.

Do the AFL run the VFL?

Like I said, it’s a social construct. Can’t have women playing with men, lord no. I remember when my son was playing against girls in the u12 and u14. He asked me how should he play against them.. and I told him, just as you would any other player on the ground. They are choosing to play footy, they know what’s involved, and they sure as hell weren’t scared of tackling the boys!

If the best spinner in Australia is a women, she should be playing in the highest competition, the Australian Cricket team where our best 11 (theoretically) are selected. I've never thought it a men's only team and am pretty sure it's only been called one relatively recently to differentiate it from the Australian Women's team. But this makes me sexist because I see what we call the men's team as superior and the women's team as only the best of a certain gender. No different to the u18 team, the best 11, but within an age requirement. Getting selected in these teams is obviously a huge accomplishment, but it's not an open ranking, it's conditional on meeting a requirement. I dont think there should be for our peak team or league. So Erin should be able to nominate and be selected in an AFL draft if she's good enough. But I don't think your son should be able to nominate for the AFLW draft because it's not the peak league, it's not open, it's limited to women. Which, again, pretty sure makes me a misogynist at some level.

On transgender, it's such a complicated issue that it surprises me that there's so many who can talk in absolutes. There really doesn't seem to be many at present, especially with the Mouncey situation.

I disagree, its the best male cricketers. Plus you put a women in she will get hurt by the bowling or do you expect the opposition to bowl trundlers outside off stump? Remember a pacy womens bowler is under 125km. Lets put her in against a 140km bowler who hits that speed every ball not just an effort ball, plus have it aimed at the body. Its not a sexist view to simply suggest male sports stay male and female sports stay female. If we want to mix sex's up in sports create mixed gender teams and leagues.

A women would never play male football at any level. One reason and one reason alone will prevent it from happening. Sexual assault laws. You can't tell me that if a guy tackled a female footballer and hands happened to grab her breast or the tackle fell around her waist and the arse and crutch were grabbed at and it was captured on tv the poor guy would be absolutely pillard, torn apart in the media, by feminist groups and no doubt accused of doing it deliberately and pressuring the female footballer to lay charges. Just like a male will never be allowed to play AFLW or any female sport. This is another reason I am against transgender males playing in womens football. There is no law that suggests they have to like men. In a lot of circumstances, trangender females still like females. Women are every bit as cunning and sharp on the tongue as men and if their is an advantage to crying assault statistically some will. I just think in a rush to be PC not everything is being thought of.

Bumping this thread.
Curious to know if there has been any change of opinions or further insight in the last 6 months?

Also, a quick reminder AFLW is just around the corner. Go Phillips and Randall!

My god you’re simple. If a female is selected she’s better than the next male so by definition she won’t need trundles bowled to her outside of off stump. She would have proven that prior to selection.

Sorry Kristof?
Correcting to say "he" about a transgendered person who clearly identifies as a woman is a dick move.

What the f*** do you care if they identify as a woman? With everything that they're dealing with, they don't need you acting like a dickhead.

Kristof, he may identify as a female but that does not change biological facts. This is why i care. People who let them choose what gender they are do not help them. It is a mental illness that needs appropriate treatment. I work with kids in an education setting who have trans parents. It is not healthy at all for these children

I believe you are stereotyping and making generalisations. Trans parents aren’t reported to be more abusive of their children (as far as I know). There might be more teasing/bullying involved with children of trans parents, but this is more a problem of society as a whole.

Regarding your claim about mental illness, it no longer becomes an illness as such if society (not you or me, but general population) deems it a normality.

Sorry John Who, I didn’t mean that the parents were abusive, just that they are generally speaking not mentally fit to give the proper emotional care a child needs. Having a parent transition is a an enormous thing for children to process.

I don’t think the majority of society thinks this is normal, but you can’t say it out loud for fear of being transphobic.
