from what i just seen on a channel nine ad for their news program at six. tredders is gonna be discussing giving up the captaincy and five or so possible candiates he wants to be the next captain.

could be a interesting to watch. thought id remind or tell port fans who dont know about it.

thats friday 6pm on nine.

I'll give a quick rundown.

* I haven't had a great year, but I don't think the captaincy has had an impact on my form.
* I have faith in Choco and the leadership group to make the correct decision, and if thats for me to step down as captain, I'll wear it.
* The exciting thing about our club is I reckon we've got a lot of young blokes that could step up and be captain; guys like Kane Cornes, Shaun Burgoyne, Troy Chaplin, Dom Cassisi and Steven Salopek.

I would've thought Motlop would be the most likely candidate. He's currently enjoying his least-injured streak of football in his career.

Yeah, maybe it would be good to pick Chad next, since he's already broken. Maybe that's the only way to reverse our Captain's Curse.

(Please, nobody suggest a group of co-captains!)

So who will be the next champion to be ruined in their prime, do we think?

I hope Kane's health cover is fully paid up.

I'd also be checking junior burger's health cover, just in case...

A fellow Port supporter suggested that Shaun be made captain as a way of snapping him out of his apparent "couldn't give a dang" mindset. Personally I don't think it is a good idea. I know it is a gross generalisation but indigenous players don't seem to be outgoing enough to cope with being the club captain.

Gross, yes. For pity's sake, JB isn't "indigenous players", he's Shaun Burgoyne.

Did you see him on "On the Couch" a few weeks back? "If I was given the job (the captaincy), I'd take it with both hands."

In principle i agree with you, but i think shaun is an exception. From what i've seen he's very well spoken. It'll be a tough decision between him and kane.

this is interesting.... 1870's post reminded me of "that" belief that indigenous players can go missing - ie they're just not reliable.... like, week in, week out reliable.... & with a touch of that in the back of my mind along with shaun's output we've seen this season (from earlier being comparible to judd to now having zero impact), i dont think shaun, well spoken or not, is a leader of men, or boys.

to give you an example, michael wilson would have been a superb port adelaide captain.

i think brogan could be captain for the next 2 years as currently i dont see a ready made long term replacement for tredders - brogan has presence on & off the field... (LOL) & he could be a good interim leader, although i'm not sure what his media skills are like. kane "could" be captain too, but his on field role is not one of leadership & "presence" & he doesnt lead the way, he is a nullifier.

tredrea completely dropped the ball this year i reckon & perhaps the results we've seen are a reflection of that.

Actually, when you think about it, that's not a bad idea...

no, tredrea doesnt offer true leadership any more & is too busy concentrating on his own form.

brogan, the agitator, the guy the opposition fans love to hate, the guy who starts it all - skillfully & physically - from the centre square & then drops back to put his body on the line, is my choice for interim captain :D

If we are looking at going for an old fashioned captain that puts the fear of God into his troops then we should look no further than Brogan.
If we are going to go for our best player, or the player most in form at the moment (as we have done every time in the AFL) then it has to be either Chad or Kane.

IMO Brogan is the one we should try out if we are going to change.
By having our best players as captains we are also putting a lot of pressure on them since they would know that is the main reason they got the job in the first place. They would feel the need to keep reproducing that form and probably become more self centric than they would/should be.
