Trengove - 2 Week Suspension

AFL will probably fine the players who are on twitter getting stuck into them

First thing I thought when reading their posts. First you can't tackle, your not allowed to have an opinion & don't bring the game into disrepute when not playing.

Starting to remind me of Satlins Russia.

In Russia football kick you.

Hmmm need some clarity, duty of care? So If a tackle is laid in future & the unfortunate incident is to occur that a player does a knee or shoulder as a result of that tackle, does that mean I get 3 weeks? #makesnosense does this mean the tackle is dead? Please explain..
that was nathan jones on twitter, good point raised.

This is the biggest joke I have ever seen. Sure the Dangerfield got hurt but it was a fair tackle. Just when things were looking up first we have this and now Jamar is apparently injured.

BTW Rivers is 50/50 for the Norf game. Which is some good news.

the (only) positive to come out of this is that it shows that the boys actually do care about one another, kind of blows the 'no-one gets along' theory out of the water.
The reaction on Twitter is a fantastic insight to the team which you wouldn't have gotten in the past.

PS shit decision

Seriously, you know the game has gone to hell when one player elbows some one intentionally in the head miles away from the ball and gets 2 weeks, yet a different player makes a tackle during a contest for the ball and accidentally injures the player he is tackling gets 3 weeks.

This is a repost of what I said in the main thread. I'm going to post it and then leave these threads because it is becoming too frustrating talking about these horrible decisions, and I reckon the quicker we move on the better. Saturday can't come fast enough.

I've gone away and had a nice dessert with the misses, combined with some classical music, and am a bit calmer now.

The majority of us here will admit that the decision is ridiculous. Trengove is being punished purely based on the effect, not the cause, as the same tackle is applied dozens of times every game. I also find it ludicrous that Andrew Tinney SC, who has likely never played the game before, can make suggestions that Trengove could have acted differently.

But, what can we do? Nothing. We can sit on the internet and bitch with each other until our fingers are sore, but it won't change a thing. After one of our best wins in recent years, things have turned very sour for Melbourne supporters by losing Trengove for 3 and, more importantly, losing Grimes for the season. Despite this, if the Melbourne that showed up on Sunday shows up again in the next three weeks then it shouldn't matter. Grimes played no part in the win against Adelaide and whilst Trengove was very good, we can hopefully replace him with McKenzie who is an even better tackler. As a good a kid as Jack is, we're not losing Jamar, Moloney, Sylvia, Jurrah, Davey, Frawley or Garland, each of whom I consider to be more important at the moment.

We are sitting 7th on the ladder with a percentage of 119. Sure, our wins have been against bottom 8 sides and a draw against the 8th ranked side but we can't be picky after the last few years. We have a ridiculously young list and on Sunday showed glimpses of a gameplan that combines the defensive pressure of Collingwood with the slick ball movement of Geelong. Sure, it's early days, but the signs are very promising. In three weeks time we will have forgotten all about this decision. If it is true that this is how we have been taught to tackle, then things will have to change. There is a ridiculous amount of ambiguity in the rules at present but we laid over 80 tackles on the weekend that were apparently legit. It is possible to be a strong team and within these rules, no matter how soft they are.

I know I'm going to try to get over it now and suggest that other Melbourne supporters do the same.

Instead of building up the frustration, instead think of which promising young midfielder we will bring in this week to replace Trengove. Do we bring back the tackling machine McKenzie, or the speedy Bennell? What about the classy Jetta or perhaps an upgrade of a rookie like Evans or Nicholson, one or both of whom may get a great chance given the long term injuries to Grimes and Spencer. Turn a negative into a positive folks! Losing Trengove for 3 weeks opens up a spot for another kid and who knows, it could be a blessing in disguise!

Sorry to break it to you mm, but not only has Trengove been robbed and Grimes injured for the season, but now Jamar is out for a month.

Someone upstairs has bent us over and ****ed us hard without any form of lubrication.

The Jamar injury is yet to be confirmed and it could present a great chance for Gawn to step up, albeit much earlier than expected.

Just trying to be positive

Tinney also argued that Trengove used a level of force above what was required to achieve his aim of dispossessing Dangerfield or stopping him from disposing of the ball.
So Trengove used excessive force did he?

Does this mean that in future when a player lays a bump they have to be careful not to use excessive force?.. oh wait the whole "aim" of the bump is to actually crunch some poor **** legally so I guess using excessive force is ok.

'Craig Goile' Where have you heard of this?

I can't see why they wouldn't, unanimous support for the decision to be overturned, and the AFL might want some way to get rid of this negative press. Love the passion shown by the boys though!

IMO, the only realy reason he is in trouble is because he had a hold of his arm/hand then did a second motion to get him to ground. I'm an Adelaide fan and I didn't see anything really wrong with it.

Melbourne fans can think their being scr***d by the football gods, but try having 18 players injured in the prvious year, to having 2 near season ending shouler injuires (Porplyzia and Davis), another shoulder which takes out one of your best outside wingman/midfielder (McKay) and have one of your tough nuts cop 2 injuries in the same game and is then out for a month (Sloane) who was pretty good on the weekend, plus the worst of all a player who is pretty important structurally in Stevens, isn't looking like playing after struggling with a head knock 4 weeks ago, bit of trouble for him I think.... Adelaide is bloody cursed I tell you.

What an absolute joke!!!

I didn't even know what the incident was and I watched the game...it was a bloody tackle and he hardly rammed him into the ground. It was a well executed tackle and I cannot see how he could have made a different decision in the heat of battle.

I would be wary of challenging this though, what are the consequences if it fails again?

I know it's an appalling decision but sometimes with the way these half wits (that's putting it nicely) operate it's better just to cop it and move on.

Wish the appeal all the best and hope he is playing against the Blues in a few weeks.
