The only time I really remember him getting beaten was that dog s**t front on contact free. Maybe one other when we get beaten badly on transition, overall he was great defensively IMO and his footskills are a massive asset. He’s a Howe prototype and he needs to stay in the seniors, he’ll only get better with time.
He lost contact on Weideman a couple of times in the first half. Looked unconfident in the first half, but his second half was very very good. He'll stay in.

I really feel like the times people blamed him for getting beaten in the first half were times we got absolutely smoked on transition; when the Bomber ball movement from back 50 and stoppage was just without anywhere near enough pressure from our midfield.
I dunno though, I was at the pub debating lopsided free kick counts with inbred Essendon supporters so maybe I missed a bit. Just felt like on the surface most things weren’t because of Ruscoe directly so much of what had proceeded the ball arriving at his opponent.
I don’t care what anybody says though, he’s AFL quality just as Murphy was before him 👍

He was also given the job to play on Weideman & Phillips/ Draper at times.

They were way bigger than him.
Yeah that’s the other thing, ideally Ruscoe is a rangey floating intercept rebound defender. Weideman, flaws aside, is a seasoned top 10 draft 197cm forward.

Ruscoe clearly isn’t our answer to playing talls without Howe and co, but he filled a role pretty admirably today I thought.
Get Murph back and have him play tall and defensive as he naturally does, free up Ruscoe to float, intercept, rebound and kick better than Murphy does 👍

His AFL role is going to be 3rd tall defender, which will often mean matching up on resting rucks. Had an excellent 2nd half.

For him to be even remotely considered a Howe replacement he needs to back himself and mark it.
Spoiled when he could’ve quite easily marked today.
I reckon he might go ok on a wing him if/when his stamina is ok.

He did well today, but he's not playing the role of Howe or Murphy just yet. As mentioned above, was reluctant to go for any marks in defence, usually opting to spoil. That's fair enough, as he's not going to have the confidence at the level yet, but until he gets there he's not really a great option as a medium/tall defender, just a good replacement.

Ruscoe took 2 contested marks today. Murphy's career high is 3, which he's done once. Murphy is a better spoiler - he's beginning to kill contests, but you're overrating his marking.

From memory, those were chest marks and may have been further up the ground. Noticed a few occasions where he had two hands overhead inside 50 and chose to spoil rather than mark. Will have to see more of him at the level to see if he can back himself to go for those marks.

He took the same sort as Murphy takes - worked his opponent under the ball. Coming at the man, neither try to mark it like Moore or Howe - it's a fist. He played really well in the second half.

Out marked by Draper? inside F50, and by Langford on a lead. From memory, Draper missed his shot on goal, Langford nailed his.

There was 1 in the last where he bodied Wiedeman under the footy which was a good effort. Not really his 1 wood though I don’t think.

Draper has 13cms on him. If Ruscoe was ever directly matched Draper, that’s a structural issue, not a Ruscoe issue.

The Langford on the lead thing I already touched on re Bombers ease of transition at varying stages during the first three quarters

Nah, it’s a personnel issue, Howe, Frampton, and Murphy we’re all missing from our defensive options. Had a run and jump to come over the top, just mistimed his jump and got nowhere near it.

Langford one, was right on his heals, went the spoil with his right arm from Langford’s LH side. Fist was never going to get to the footy. Lanfgford took an easy chest mark. Poor spoiling technique in that instance. Should have been a lunge with the left.

Kelly surprised me in the last Q.
A couple of beautiful kicks. 55m +
He would be handy if he gets his s**t together.
I was in shock tbh, really did not think he had it in him. I thought Trey had to play the game of his life, and in the 2nd half, he really did. I couldn't wait to get home to watch the replay, because I couldn't believe what I'd just seen. I thought were goners at 3qtr time. I never carry on about the umpiring, but they were atrocious today. I couldn't see how we could come back when they clearly had an extra 4 men of the field. It was so deflating...but they were all supermen in that last qtr.

Come on FJ, I think you’re a bit drunk on the euphoria of the win.

Kelly played his role adequately for a bloke who has been on the list for 5-6 seasons but nothing more than that.

He kicks (very) high floaters that hang in the air for an eternity, are nearly impossible to mark overhead and easy to spoil.

Congrats to Kelly on playing his part in a great Anzac Day win but I still think he’ll be delisted at year’s end.
