During the 5 minute drive from work to dinner, Rowie said something about Laird looking like he's still struggling a bit with his calf. Anyone else hear or see anything about Laird carrying, it's the first I've heard of it.
Copped a knock , think it might have been 2nd quarter in a collision and got up limping

He’d be sore today I reckon

Paywalled, so I can't see the detail, but Jon Ralph has tweeted that there's been a tribunal "tweak" that says SPP could serve the first week of his suspension in the second trial game.

Discretionary on the AFL .. so if he is banned they "could" allow the practice match to be the first week of his ban, or they could make round 1 be the first week of his ban

You're gradually getting there re Thilly, slow process but. ;)
Want to see more of that attitude, before fully committing.

Still do think if he was 8cm shorter we would have a truly elite midfielder. That is where my Ruck thoughts come from. Competitive in Ruck, then an elite mid. Peak Brodie Grundy. His work in traffic and running capacity is freakish for a 200+CM guy.

Without the aggression a good, not great forward.

With what he showed Friday night, elite competition best key forward.

We all laugh at Dixon's anger, because that is all he has. His actual footy nous and skill is woeful.

Fog has the agro, but gets sucked in too easily, as Tex did in his mid 20s.

Thilthorpe has great natural skills, freakish athletic ability and very high IQ. Add the ability to use the body to win the contest, and smart enough not to get sucked into negative contests, his forward ceiling is massive.

We saw that Friday.

Here it is

Sam Powell-Pepper’s decision to bump Adelaide opponent Mark Keane instead of brace for inevitable contact is likely to see him handed at least a three-match suspension from the AFL.

But Powell-Pepper could be allowed to serve a game of any potential ban in next Friday’s community series clash against Fremantle.

Under new regulations, there is the “discretion for the AFL to apply a suspension differently in exceptional and compelling circumstances”.

It means even if Powell-Pepper is handed a three or four-week ban there is discretion for the league to force him to serve all of it starting from round 1 or serve one of those weeks’ suspension in the community series.

The AFL’s match review team will on Monday assess the weekend’s incidents.

Under AFL rules if Powell-Pepper had stopped his forward momentum as the players moved towards him and then simply braced for any contact as he protected himself he would have a clear case for his defence.

But footage shows Powell-Pepper instead leant into a bump, which breached his duty of care to opponent Keane, who was concussed.

The most likely course of action is that Powell-Pepper is handed a severe impact, high-contact, careless rough conduct report.

In recent history every AFL player suspended across the official pre-season competition has had to start that suspension from the first week of the season proper.

The league has just changed that rule, in part because of the quirks of the starting times state league seasons.

Given many state league seasons start later than the AFL season, players who still have VFL suspensions to serve from the previous season could be unfairly penalised.

This year the VFL season only starts in round 2 of the AFL season, so players waiting to serve VFL suspensions could also miss their AFL team’s first two games.

So while the rule has been brought in for state-league players, it does give the AFL leeway to decide how any suspension is served.

Richmond on Sunday confirmed midfielder Tyler Sonsie, suspended for three weeks in the VFL last year for an off-the-ball strike, could serve the remaining two weeks of that suspension in rounds zero and one of the AFL season.

The VFL appealed his three-week suspension and had hoped for a lengthier ban but was unsuccessful.

So while the VFL had argued for a four or five-week ban, he will only miss one week of VFL action – the final round last year – and return for round 1 of the VFL season on the weekend of March 22-24.

It is not known if the league’s new regulations played a part in the AFL allowing him back for the start of the VFL season instead of serving the remaining two weeks in the VFL.

Collingwood’s Jordan De Goey, Adelaide’s Shane McAdam and Richmond’s Rhyan Mansell all served three-week bans for high bumps last year, with Nathan Broad’s sling tackle the only incident handed a four-week ban.

So Powell-Pepper might hope to serve only a three-week ban if he is found guilty of rough conduct, even if he has to argue his case at the tribunal.

Under an AFL rule tweak the MRO can now offer players a three-week ban for a severe impact incident rather than sending them directly to the AFL tribunal.

Rioli is lucky SPP was there. As was Keane.

That sling tackle would have done more damage to Keane, and given Rioli 4 weeks.

Think SPP is u lucky. But he did take the opportunity to bump, instinctive reaction. In today's game 2 to 3 weeks is fair.

Seriously how many contested marks (AFL definition) do you expect him to take?

In 2023, the player with the most contested marks for the year was Charlie Curnow at 2.58.
Well, if Charlie Curnow topped the league last year with 2.58 contested marks per game, surely anything below 7 is below average (checks maths, scratches head)?

Do people just post dross like this in the hope no-one will fact check them and it becomes accepted? Double-ups against both grand finalists, top 4 Port and prelim finalists GWS. WC & GC the only poor sides.
Not to mention being sent to play in the wilderness every fourth week probably wasn't great for us.

Actually, reckon it was worse than that -

Round 6 - Launceston (vs Hawks)
Round 8 - Geelong (vs Cats)
Round 10 - Ballarat (vs Dogs)
Round 12 - Darwin (vs Suns)

And then Round 15 we play our first game in Melbourne for the season vs Collingwood @ G.

Whoever had this sort of fixture over 7 weeks?

If anyone with skills can post the vision of Thilthorpe taking contested marks it would be greatly appreciated to show one of the posters

I’m tipping 6 but maybe it was more like 4 with a couple of ‘nearlys’

In any case he was the clear most dangerous tall forward on the ground which is definite progression
Rather than do just contested marks, I've put together a short video of all his "involvements". Sorry about the quality, I had to zoom in so you could see him. Also I did it all in slo-mo.

Alir is going to be Thilthorpe's bitch for the next few years....

Playing him as a Ruckman takes away his #1 weapon, his contested marking.

Woeful. If Dixon played his career at Adelaide only Modra and Walker would have more goals. Dixon is also 20th in total contested marks in AFL history. Also an All Australian.

Fog has the agro, but gets sucked in too easily, as Tex did in his mid 20s.

As a forward - Thilthorpe is almost impossible to match up on. Those that have the height and weight to match up on him wont have the speed / aerobic capacity.

Its something a smart coach will look to exploit. Lets see how Nicks uses him.

Maybe. To me Jones looked like a child when he came into the league - even 3 years in he still looked out of place and got smashed in most contests. He looks physically up to it now and his performance has lifted accordingly

Not sure what Jones you were watching. He's always been a straight line player, his issues were (and still are a bit) spatial awareness and decision making. Never got smashed in contests though he's a tough nuggett

I'm glad you included the times he ran under the ball or avoided body contact in marking contests. Serious JJ vibes about his contested marking.

He will be a great running forward/ruck, but a strong marking pillar up forward he isn't.
