WEST Coast recruit Bradd Dalziell is honing his defensive talents in a bid to win a permanent spot as an Eagles' midfielder. Dalziell has carved a reputation as a dashing winger, but the new Eagle plans to present a case for selection in next month's NAB Cup series as a run-with tagger.

Clearly has the endurance and there's a bit of a gap in that role now that Stenglein and R.Jones have retired. Are people happy with this or would you prefer to see him given more freedom?

The idea has merit because I'm not sure Razzle Dazzle has that much hurt factor when he has the ball in his hands.

He has the tank to run with anyone in the comp but being a tagger is a skill in itself, you need to be a fierce competitor with a desire to win every contest at any cost, haven't seen enough of Bradd to make a case either way.

With the young mids coming through I think ASelwood remains our no1 tagging option, and you know he will give you everything he has.

Spot on with everything you've said. Selwood when released last year actually played some damaging games too. I still like the idea of the tagger being able to hurt going the other way. Nothing worse for a player copping a heavy tag than to have his opponent kick a goal on him.

Agree with the posts above... worth a go for sure... if he can really grasp the tagger tactics of the body on body, blocking, niggling, then the 'run with' component wont be a problem. And as for queries about being able to hurt the other way, I dont see that as much of an issue. Some people here query his disposal quality is if its at the level of an 8 yr old auskicker... it might not be the best and he might not be the person you'd want delivering 60% of your I50s, but as a tagger than wouldnt be his main role ... but he is still skilled enough to hurt going the other way when the opportunity presents. He has a good chance of running his opponent ragged trying to get away from him, then when the turn over does happens, I can see him just running away along the wings and carrying / presenting on the rebound with his opponenent completely spent behind him... fingers crossed for him that he can make it work.

Its kind of like going out and saying dont worry guys, you have the 2 hot ones, ill take the rhino.

Its nobel of him but you got to ask the question, why the rhino? Does he think hes not good enough for a more attacking role? IMO if he wants to be a tagger he needs to get 100 times better at clearance work over the coming months. Runnings only half the part of tagging a player. You need to be able to get in the rough and tumble yourself.

Personally I like Adam Selwood in the role as he gets a bit of the pill himself. Dalziell is best of a HFF.

Razzle's best skill is the same as Rosa - getting open and available for receiving the ball. I don't know if he has the toughness and tenacity of the Selwoods or McGinnity or Cockie to become a tagger. I'd prefer all those mentioned above to have first go than Razzle, but it's preseason, and what better time to test things out?

dalziell gaining the huge tank that he has shows he has good discipline and an outstanding work rate. he also seems very focused.

i think he has the attibutes to be a great tagger. but not too sure where the eagles sit with this one.

mcginnity was our great white hope for a tagger a few months ago right?

i think as spots in our 22 become harder to earn. a tagger is going to be someone that can play defensive as well as offensive. which may be a mountain for dalziell to climb.

I think it's best we all give **** a chance to show his wares in the preseason before pigeonholing him as a certain type of player. How much have you all actually seen of the guy?

From the threads I've looked through on the Brisbane board, whilst he is more or less an outside midfielder, he appears to have no issues getting in and under himself. His tackling stats, while not outstanding, also improved in his 2nd year.

In that article he talks about parts of his game he'd like to improve and develop.. I'd suggest he's referring to things like hard-ball gets, tackling and clearances, which I reckon he might have more aptitude in than he's generally given credit for.

As many have said, definitely worth a go as a stopper. Might surprise a few I reckon.

Indeed.

What's the deal with having a guy who has the talent to find a heap of the ball playing a role that involves stopping others getting the ball?

It seems like we're not really utilising his strengths here...Unless, of course, what we thought were strengths weren't.

I remember I said at the time of the trade that it was a big fat nothing and I continue to get the impression. Dalziell gets a lot of media love but at the end of the day, if he was good, it would've taken more than Staker to get him.

Hagdorn is a grade A hack and i don't take anything he writes seriously. And i used to work with him. He just makes stuff up to get a headline. He has no sources at any of the clubs and as most of us on here know most of he writes turns out to be exaggerated or plainly not true.

Did anybody else notice that in all of the direct quotes in the article from Dalziell at no stage does he say anything about wanting to play as a tagger or in any kind of defensive role? No quotes from anybody at all confirming the thrust of his article nor any real information at all. I am not against Dalziell playing a defensive role if true but i think this article is going to turn out to be a steaming pile of made up BS from Hagdorn. He couldn't even find one quote from the player himself or any of the coaching staff to include in his article to confim this. That is suspicious.

So long as he hurts the opposition by getting numerous touches ala Kane Cornes I am happy for him to take this role. However if its going to affect his ball winning ability I don't think its for him.

Spot on 15YM, I thought the exact same thing.

All his quotes refer to playing midfield, but not tagging

Good point - didnt even realise... goddam cant believe I didnt question the accuracy of a Hagdorn piece *facepalms*... literally not one quote that even hints at a defensive run with role

He does it all the time. Like 15ym said, he has no sources so he'll grab generic quotes by someone from the club and twist them into a "news" story.

Clearly about the only source he's ever had is some old bloke in a Fitzroy jumper on the street who told him Dalziell had some toe.

So ever since Hackdorn's been calling him "quick", "nippy" or "blistering" when he's a one-paced gut-runner.

Could be a Kane Cornes clone.

Not overly damagaing by foot - but can run with his player all day and zone off occasionally to give an easy out to a defender looking for an easy kick out of defence.

Let's see if he has Kane's discipline though to stay on his man

McGinnity should get first crack at taking over the tagging role from Selwood, he's shown a bit of skill in the role and I like his tenacious attitude.

Looking forward to properly checking out Dalz in the NAB cup, looks like he's going to get plenty of chances to make it or break it there.

Just posted something very similar in the "Öutside mids" thread.

McGinnity should get a crack at the run with role and can also play as a small defender. Sumich said "You always know what you will get from Ginny, a honest hard crack at the contest" or something close to this.

McGinnity will release both Selwoods into attacking midfield roles which shouldn't be underestimated.

Dalziell would be a good run with player on types like Cousins:eek:, Delideo, Travis Johnston, Thomas or Montania.

McGinnity just needs a chance, he has lightning closing speed and is pretty strong so releasing Adam would be great because I don't think he is being fully utilized in the team.

Spot on re Selwood, we will be a much better side if he can be released permanently to midfield. He does the defensive things well, it's what makes him a good HBF and tagger but it's also exactly what we need around the clearances at the moment.

I reckon Dalz and Rosa should fight it out for a spot on the wing.
