Yep. It was all driven by the local Labor government - hardworking public servants should get an extra day off because of the stresses of the Howard government work choices legislation(!). If that sounds far-fetched, here's a snippet from the original press release:A few years ago the ACT decided to have a public holiday on Melb Cup day - called it Community Day, or some such wank - but it caused a huge dip in revenue for caterers, venues, liquor stores, etc because there were hardly any office Cup functions. I think it got moved to a different date.
"FAMILY AND COMMUNITY DAY PUBLIC HOLIDAY
Workers in the ACT will get a day off to spend with their families, with the first ever ACT Family and Community Day to be held on the first Tuesday in November 2007.
Minister for Industrial Relations, Andrew Barr, made the announcement this weekend, saying Canberra’s workers were worse off under the Howard Government’s Work Choices legislation and needed time to spend with family and friends."
The formal holiday replaced "Union Picnic Day" which was an unofficial day off for similar reasons before then.
The idiots didn't factor in the amount of money that was spent on the day provided a significant income for a lot of lower paid workers and small businesses.
It lasted a couple of years until it was moved to the weekend before Labor Day, which then basically caused the economy to shut down for an entire week. It's now morphed into Reconciliation Day which is held in May.
And you wonder why ACT residents voted, more than once, to have nothing to do with self-government. We are allowed to grow cannabis though, and from next year we can legally possess small amounts of other drugs. Oh goody.
