I'm not a huge F1 guy. But my impression is that although Hamilton has equalled Schumacher in titles, nobody rates him as highly.

I sense there's some sarcasm here but he's probably the best personality in Australian cricket for a while and him smacking the Indians around for fun is a highlight.

Has sanitising sports really been worth it? It isn't like sports were in trouble before when everything was a little rougher, a little less polished. Does anyone really think that any large sporting leagues wouldn't be as big with growth in the last decade or two if they didn't begin to sanitise themselves?

Yea I mean jokes aside he's huge in the cricket world at the moment, in our culture cricketers are like b list actors in other parts of the world they are gods.
I think it's a choice to ignore whoever is lighting up the world stage rather than 'there's no heroes anymore' if you have a disillusionment with the current state of sport it's not broadly everyone elses experience as well.

Best players in the NBA currently are European - Jokic, Doncic & Antetokounmpo. Probably affects the superstar marketability somewhat.

I think the concept of a household name still applies. You couldn't exist in the 90s without knowing Michael Jordan, no matter how counter culture you were. You couldn't ignore it. For the less Americanised, there was Shane Warne and Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara, etc. You couldn't ignore Wayne Carey or Tony Lockett or Gary Ablett.
Who's the current AFL household name in Aus? Now that Buddy and Dusty have retired? Even as a coach someone like Kevin Sheedy was common knowledge. Not sure I can think of any now, except, god help us all, Ken Hinkley has been great at getting his name around. Who's the current Tennis name? Maybe Djokovic still has a little bit left to squeeze? The great names of soccer are winding down. There's ****ing not a single rugby player anymore lol. The only boxer is a youtuber. The only MMA is now a drugged up rapist who hasn't fought in years.

There's gotta be a bit of, it isn't tall poppy, but we do probably undersell that our cricketers are actually international figures of sport, because cricket isn't big in America. It's huge for a billion Indians, big in the UK, big in some of Africa, and growing in other places like the middle east, lol.
Recently in Aus it's just become something to do in between the kick and catch sports, and has to fight now with international offerings who's seasons run in our summer months.

His last IPL season was a straight up ridiculous follow on to bashing up India in two ICC Finals.
If it wasn't for Mitchell Starc making a mess of him in the IPL Final he'd be clearly the biggest Australian cricketer in the world at the moment.

The older guys have lingered longer than in the past. LeBron, Curry, Messi, Ronaldo all still play and demand attention long after their predecessors would have retired. It sucks up the oxygen somewhat.
There is also the fact we had absolute generational players at the same time. LeBron is only behind MJ. Curry changed the league with his shooting.
I doubt anyone is scoring 90 goals in a season like Messi and Ronaldo managed. Both will go down as all time greats

This is true, but I think there is a genuine splitting up of sport globally that causes this effect.
Like growing up every Australian knew Kieran Perkins and Cathy Freeman. The whole country got around the idiot box to tune in.
Could I name a single athlete at the last 3 olympics outside of Raygunn and Bolt? Probably not. I dont watch the olympics any more because there is so much more choice in entertainment. You'd almost never now have a situation where 10 people from different age brackets and walks of life would be able to stand around and discuss the same sport/athlete. Maybe 2 of them know F1, 1 knows tennis, 3 know footy, etc. There is no modern equivalent to Kieran Perkins or Cathy Freeman.
I dont think Jordan can be beaten, he is the greatest sports person in any sport, above Tiger Schumacher Ali etc in his own rare echelon.

I would have Pele miles above Jordan honestly. Just my opinion.
Ehh soccer is a hard one to judge since the unevenness of it all skill between countries and mainly dollar value of teams. I can't put any soccer player in that echelon because of this reason alone.
Whilst I agree with this statement in general none of those guys I listed were stars in my "youth". My youth was last century. But I could recognise their greatness and star power. Just don't see anybody like that at the moment in any sport.
