It sounds like an interesting documentary and ironically a lot of people who are 'outraged' at the Republican movement would simply like to see Uncle Sam be brought to its knees once and for all and wouldn't bat an eyelid for its people who would suffer. I remember in a tutorial back in the day during the GFC a left winger said, she 'just didn't care' about people losing their homes and this was greeted with nods of approval.
We all should be outraged at the Republican movement if by that you mean the current day Republican Party. This organisation is IMO a terrorist organisation. They started a war in Iraq based on their own lie that lead to the deaths of over 300,000 innocent civilians.

They support the NRA, another group that should be called a 'terrorist' organisation, endorsed by the fact that over 40,000 of their own citizens meet their end at the wrong end of a gun on a yearly basis.

They refuse a national healthcare system despite the fact 57% of bankruptcies in the US are caused by medical expenses. That figure rose to 67% under Trump when he threw 20 million people off Obamacare.

They support an absolute nut case in Trump and will gladly end democracy if elections don't go their(his) way in future. They couldn't even manage to vote to impeach Trump over his campaign to steal the election. The party is full of far right wing nut jobs such as Taylor, Jordan, Santos, DeSantis.

Under the disaster that was set in motion by Reagan's economic policies in the 1980s the US is no longer a capitalist country. Under the Republican party, the wealthy rule. They control who gets elected by political donations and they own the media to give everyone a good taste of propaganda. Hello Fox News.

Under Trump the top 1% of wealthy Americans increased their wealth by 50% in 4 years, the greatest increase ever recorded, while the rest of the country stagnated or went backwards.

I am all for capitalism, but it needs to be regulated in order to work for all citizens not the uber wealthy.

So when you talk of bringing Republicanism to its knees in the guise of Uncle Sam, the only sufferers I see are the wealthy who rather than being worth $10 billion might only be worth $8 billion, the poor souls.

Meanwhile those that are truly suffering include those on the wrong side of the health system, gun violence, invaded foreign countries, minimum wage earners, the scientific community migrants ect ect just about=the rest of the country.

So count me in for the cheer squad if the Republican Party bites the dust. There was once upon a time decent Republicans such as John Mcain but they bit the dust when the nutters took over.

I cant disagree with much of that. The only good thing about the modern day Republicans I can think of is that they are isolationist in ideology.

Having said that be careful what you wish for cliff. Uncle Sam has been idealistic and can take criticism, that's not the case for the rising ride of dictatorships around the world. The marshal plan was good post world War II, the world was most peaceful then it had ever been for the past eighty years or so. There's been amazing advancements in the world especially through medicine among other things and for much of that we thank America for. It's a dying empire for better or worse depending on your outlook.

I personally don't think the world will be a more peaceful place in the next 80 years with the way it's going but we may just have to agree to disagree with that.

Will be appealed and then overturned by Supreme Court.

Just more ammo for fundraising by the Grifter in Chief.
Do these idiots not understand that Trumps first order of business on a return to the White House will to be overturn the two term rule.
And then do a Xi and appoint himself President for life.
The man is evil personified.

So he’s going to get a Constitutional Amendment over the line and then he is going to tear it up? Why not just do step 2?

Calm down Chicken Little.

Very much doubt that it will overcome the following hurdles.

An amendment may be proposed and sent to the states for ratification by either:
To become part of the Constitution, an amendment must be ratified by three-fourths of the states (38 since 1959) by either (as determined by Congress):
  • The legislatures of three-fourths of the states; or
  • State ratifying conventions in three-fourths of the states.[3] The only amendment to be ratified through the state convention method thus far is the Twenty-first Amendment in 1933. That amendment is also the only one that explicitly repeals an earlier one, the Eighteenth Amendment (ratified in 1919), establishing the prohibition of alcohol.[4]
There have been over 11,000 proposals to change the Constitution and only 27 have been ratified to date.

I do however agree on your last sentence.

Does the constitution say a 2 term presidents henchman and puppet cannot become President?

What does the constitution say about powerful people that appointed the people enforcing those things in the constitution, who just ignore the constitution?

I mean, there are some despots and one party states with truly fantastic constitutions, better than ours.

He'll probably be the next President unfortunately. America is in a state of absolute chaos. It's baffling the bloke who incited a riot that resulted in deaths will be the nomination.

American democracy is terminally ill. Not Don's fault, the patient has been spluttering for quite a while, but I think we can rely on him to switch off the life support.

And to shoot the patient for good measure.

Then throw them out of the hospital window.

Then blow up the hospital, because he likes it when things go KABOOM!

I don't know if it'll be one of those rare instances of a sequel which betters the original, but Trump 2: The Unflushable Turd won't be boring.

Just on the haemorrhaging of US democracy, came across a decent article the other day:

They like us have killed a really important balance in the system - the unions. So with real wages going down even with GDP rises, many don't view the economic system as working for them - because it's not. Then throw in America's disdain for welfare... What is the point of democracy when the economic system has such a power imbalance.

Poignant after Tay’s selection of Joe Rogan as a dinner guest and certain people responding with “at least he’s someone who thinks for himself, etc. etc.”.

I thought it was Tom Mitchell who thought Trump would be a good dinner guest?

For them, someone who 'thinks for themselves' means a person who says ludicrous things and doesn't feel embarrassed about their own stupidity.

Trump fits the bill. Biden will never have enough senior moments to to achieve the peak imbecile of Don.

Still, it would be nice if the US could find some contenders who aren't two decades past retirement age.

There's a study linked in the article I posted. It did an interesting job of trying to calculate the percentage of 'popular will' in American politics and policy.

The conclusion is that the US isn't really a democracy at all. The people carry out the ritual of voting and, whatever the outcome, the elites of politics and capital keep the system pumping to their advantage.

Not a new story, but an increasingly apparent state of affairs which makes an even bigger joke of the 'American Dream'.

First you killed off the Roman Empire…

A Swans poster jumped on the board and remarked that Tay had said it, in the context of (humorously) having buyer’s remorse about the trade for him. No-one refuted him at the time.

I'd like to say that no way way would my Tay Tay want Trump as a dinner guest, but maybe he did say some such thing and I never heard it.

I just recall a podcast with Tom Mitchell and Jack Ginnivan talking very intellectually about how awesome it'd be to have the great man at dinner, because he's such an original thinker.

Maybe it's a footballer thing, like how they all used to list The Shawshank Redemption as their favourite movie.

Fear factor and Newsradio did have their moments...

Come on man, that’s an awesome movie.

A really good movie, but the kind of good movie you enjoy watching the first time. Doesn't really reward a repeated viewing.

Anyway...I was just pointing out the somewhat amusing way in which almost every footballer (maybe 10 years ago) cited it as their favourite.

I think Bucks said it was his fave, at least before he started taking an interest in things like kintsugi.

Disagree, I never get sick of watching it. I think it has immense revisitation value.
