I liked a lot of his older documentaries and he was one of the very first to expose the khmer rouge atrocities. He struck me as very left wing rather than simply 'opposing what passed for convention'. I would be very surprised at him supporting a real right winger like Trump!

He has a big asterick next to his name for mine. I wouldn't touch his older stuff with a ten foot pole. I might be quite a bit younger than you I'd imagine so different perspectives/outlooks I'd presume.

He wasn't talking from America's perspective. He was anti-US involvement in foreign affairs, so he was saying that it would be a good thing to have Trump in and the us withdraw from a lot of things they do.

I think a few years seniority along with a left leaning youth and young adulthood probably makes a big difference in Pilger appeal. You couldn't fault the line he took on Kampuchea.

When Trump is back in 2024 let's see if Pilger was wrong about that too, I've disagreed with JB1975 on a few things but when Trump gets back in, get the popcorn out, geo-politics with China is going to be one hell of a ride! Pilger predictably would become an even bigger Xi fanboi in that case if there was a time-traveling machine.

If Biden is the Democrat's candidate, I can see him losing. There is something seriously wrong with a country boasting a population of 340 million that can only produce a couple of geriatrics to contest the presidency, and of the two, Biden is undoubtedly in worse physical and mental shape. I thoroughly dislike Trump but secretly enjoyed his needling of China. Unlike with you, Biden's unqualified support for Israel since Oct 7 has irked me. I think I would have as much difficulty in finding a party I could vote for in the USA as I do here.

I'm not in the camp of cheering on Israel and I'm happy that Australia hasn't been in lockstep with the USA in regards of support for Israel. The cheerleading for Palestine all the while ignoring Hamas' atrocities and end goal is nauseating not to mention far louder. As much as a lot of people love bringing it up at every chance it's been a blight on this country that we have been a US lapdog over the years. The guy who was in power in Aus from 1996-2007 did a lot of damage to Australia's reputation over this time. "we are the deputy sherrif in the region, FFS. However, and yes there is a but coming here, we need the USA as an ally and unless you've (not you personally TGG) lived under a rock for the first few years of this decade you should be able to at least understand Australia's 'insurance policy'.

Biden and Trump as candidates is a diabolical proposition. I'm definitely in lockstep with you on that one. Out of 340 million people, it's one of life's mysteries.

The bloke spent a big chunk of his life in South East Asia reporting on the mess and human disaster that Western Imperialism and ignorant arrogant interference had caused.

I'm not saying he is right about Putin or Trump. I'm saying: so what? If you want to judge him by recent comments you're a fool. By then he was an 80 year old without his former connections. He was still trying to fight his enemy - Western Imperialism and geopolitical blundering. Good on him.

He was unhinged well before he went senile.
He had his faculties to make.a documentary on the coming war - it was cherry picked so badly it could be recognised as propaganda for China. He had.his faculties to leave out truths to push his narrative and make a documentar. This was happening at the same time as to his claim on putin and supporting of trump. He was unhinged.

He seemed to consider that the noble cause of fighting Western imperialism justified any statement.

I didn't see a lot of his work, but what I did see was so blatantly biased and dishonest, that even when the thing he was criticising deserved the criticism, his take was just awful.

The issues he cared about deserved a better journalist imop.

I think we're talking about different parts of his career. John Pilger was an amazing investigative journalist who faced incredible danger to tell earth shattering, world changing stories.

His more recent stuff is pretty irrelevant sensationalism and reek of an aging man trying to relive his former glory.

Not everyone is Trump or Biden.
If you ignore the politics inherent in the comparison one is a criminal which seems to make many, statistically almost anyone, a better option.
Both are Americans hence are irrelevant to normal humans.

the reference related to lack of appreciation that the world is complex...and as for trump being a criminal, it seems half of america doesnt care and they're probably not appreciating what he's going to do when he returns. I've read that gen W,X,Y and Z think democracy is outdated...
