Hugh Greenwood DOB 06/03/1992, HT.185 cm, WT.80 kg (Lauderdale, Tas)- This kid is a bit lanky and needs to bulk up, but he was still able to crash packs and take strong contested marks. In the third game of the tournament he tore NSW apart kicking 3 goals in the second quarter. Not only did he kick them from set shots, he was able to crumb the ball and take snaps over his shoulder.

I go to school with Hughie, he's a year below me.

Is with the AIS for Basketball as well as playing Tassie under 16 Football, and from what he has told me he is more likely to choose basketball than football.Tantalising prospect if he ends up choosing football though.

I've also had the pleasure of watching and umpiring Hugh a few times. Put him in the Ruck and he dominates the tap outs as well as doubling as a fourth rover (very much Dean Cox Esque)

If he plays forward he kicks at least seven and if he plays in the midfield 30 + touches everytime.

Plays 15's and 17's for Lauderdale when not focused on his basketball and is very much the teams superstar, and they miss him sorely as he is constantly unavailable.

Another to look out for is Nick Santi.

Not sure of his height, around 185-190 mark. Weight around 90 kgs. Big marking forward, very much in the Quinten Lynch or Jonathon Brown bracket. Very solid mark, great hands and a booming kick.

Nick plays 19's for Glenorchy and kicked 6 in one of the games at the champs.

Tommy Lucin- A athletic midfielder who played in the backline for the first time and exceeded all expectations was tommy lucin. Lead the way in the Grand final and was simply unstoppable with his run off the half backline. Didn't miss a target all game. Was very good at ground level and is decievingly strong.

Good attitude and is likely to be a AIS member. :thumbsu:

I got to see a bit of the South Australian team in the lead up to the carnival and their first game against Vic Country. Although their results were disappointing, there are a few good prospects amongst the team.

I was impressed with Alex Carey, Lewis Johnston, George Long, Darcy Armfield and Alex Wilson from the SA team.

However, the best prospect amongst this year's SA Under 16 team in my opinion is Matthew Panos, SA's full forward. Whilst obviously not a lot of goal scoring opportunities when the ball was probably down the other side of the ground for most of the games, I notice that he still kicked 5 goals against the two best teams and was amongst the best in the loss to WA. He is an unbelievable athlete and a very strong mark. He has the most 'up-side' of the players I saw. His reading of the game is very, very good.

Would be interested in other's views who got to see the SA games at the carnival.

I only saw game 2 vs SA, and have seen Vic metro vs Vic Country trials at Vic PK earlier on. Here are my thoughts on these two-
Blease. A bit like Tom Scully/Durarcell Man. Keeps going and going. During the second maybe third quarter. Blease backed into a pack of players going for a mark on the wing at Southport. I thought thats courageous. He got polaxed but continued on as if nothing had happened.I couldn't imagine a 16 year doing that. AFL players do it, but they are men.
The advice I was given pre-game by another Vic Metro parent on Blease's aerobic capacity was spot on.- The further the game went the more he got the ball . Others tired He kept getting better. I think he has a huge future. He runs very well.
Cachia. Definately a leader. Started slowly vs SA but got better and better. I saw him dive horizontaly to effect a brilliant smother. His skills are very good and he has hardness in his favour. His kicking was delightful. He has very clean hands- One touch player.

I am also surprised Blease was not named in the best throughout the carnival - super fast and super fit. This kid was great and in another thread I have named him in my top 3 VM for the championships.

IMO - top 3 are Scully, Tobin and Blease.

IMO Cachia was good 2nd game but was not a stand out in the 1st and 3rd. I was surprised to see him named in bests in 1st game but believe he will get AIS on reputation.

Care to elaborate on Liam Tobin?
Cheers

Tobin was another one of the runners through the half back line. Good pace, hard at it, good work ethic and good foot skills. Like the rest of the back line, these kids would normally play on ball in their tac clubs.
Rayner winger runs all day played back pocket. Grimes super gutsy tall, played full back, Witkowski (probably the only regular backman),other mid to tall, played in the other back pocket. Lucin back flank, normally rover, goal kicking foward flanker, super quick, hard & creative, Talia CHB, normally winger, ruck rover HF, had the big jobs on the CHF's and Tobin on the other back flank. Purcell also did a job in the last game in the back line. Remember probably only one player was a recognised backman.

Don't underestimate any of these guys performances as not one of their direct opponents kicked any bags of goals. Goals came from further up the ground, thru' the middle.

Its a testament to their attitude to sacrifice their games to do a job. IMO the main reason metro won the carnival and the coaching staff should be congratulated for identifing these qualities.
I would welcome anyone to argue that this wasn't the case.

they give out 30 scholarships and athletic ones are the first chosen then players with good decision making

Fair call.

Main qualities are, needs to be able to run all day, run under 3sec for 20m, good kicking, handball and gather and decision making. Selectors don't really worry about how many times you get the ball, they worry about what you do when you get it. Together with what you do when you haven't got it.

These games were played at frantic pace and the above skills are what will carry them further as they progress up the ranks and the games get quicker.

Approx a months time.

IMO VM's best three for championships were Scully (MVP and played great captains football), Tobin and Blease.

Steele Sidebottom was MVP for Vic Country and well deserved.

Were did you hear that from they come out in 4 days time, i spoke to Kane Lucas a scolarship hopefull.

Blease & Tobin are only opinions.

Scully was MVP for metro & for the comp.
Sidebottom was MVP for country.
These were announced on the final presentation day.

It doesn't nesesarily mean that they will get a scholarship.

I thought that the scholarships would be announced by the end of the month.

you gotta give it to cachia though, he mite have had a bit of a bad carnival (by his standards) but he dominated the vic metro carnival. the reputation he has is just. he has built it up himself by what he does on the park.

My take on Cachia's carnival.

Cachia was rotated in the middle thru' the bench. So ground time was limited.
His height 181cm, is what is considered to be a small at this level. In an earlier post i identified that he would require to obtain some additional tricks and drop this "plays tall tag" He did not have a poor carnival by any standards.
In his typical manner he was tough and gathered numerous tough, pressure centre clearances.
Similar to the way he would play in the back line, spoil from behind, tackle, gather and clear with his trademark big hoof.
When it is done down back its applauded, in the middle, you need at times a bit more polish, sidestep, find some space and deliver. That is what was lacking in his game. He was his usual self, but at this level a bit more polish is required.
He has numerous qualities in his game and should be considered for AIS.
The coaches relise that he is going to be up against similar sized (height wize) whippets that move like snakes and he needs to learn how to work thru' the middle.
He well and truly performed the job asked of him by the coaches (being the tough man in the middle) and assisted metro in claiming the trophy.
Cachia is used to running in straight lines and at times needed to perhaps slow down a little when running away from goals rather than trying to kick around corners.
He is a ball magnet, tough, fit, skillful and the more time he spends in the middle or on the ball will only benefit him in the long run.
Remember the average height of the metro team was 186cm. so he needs to learn how to be a small.

I thought the full back was very good very strong and p[lenty of dash no 25 i think . They were a bit stiff not to beat country but were disapointing the other games they seemed to throw in the towel a bit easy .

tom scully the most worthy winner i have seen at this level, outstanding 3 games and was rewarded with the medal, super effort..apparently a very likeable and level headed kid

Any1 thoughts on Koby Stevens from country?? particulary that saw the Country V Metro game.... thought he was close to best on for the country side. went to the carnival struggling with a virus aswell so was below par in first few games. But looks the type they like these days... any1 elses opinions?

Ithought Koby was dissaponting he looked ok in patches and has talent but he really needs to look at this and step it up he was to slow with options turned his back on play, did a lot of "kids" things that he needs to get out of his game . I dont know what level he plays at in his local footy but he looks like he has got a lot of bad habits from being a big fish in a little pond . I know the coaches got into him a bit as well he has a lot of upside to him but if he is going to be a key forward he has to learn to present more and work harder when the basll hits the deck no second efforts chasing accountability etc. There were a lot like him for country .

That sounds like a fair assessemnt Sportz1, as i believe Koby is only playing local u16s in a very minor league and running around doing as he pleases. Training with the Gippsland Power u18s though and apparently there keen to try him before seasons end.

yeah i thought it may be the case you see it a fair bit in the 15's 16's and i think the country team in paticular suffered a lot from such players . There were probably 6-10 players that wernt up to the standard of play on offer. By that i dont mean the kids dont have talent it is just that they are way behind in expierience at that level and tempo. Some of the things you see are just inexpierience and the better teams exploit it and unfortunatly Koby showed a lot of them .These kids really need to step up and play at the highest level they possibly can to ensure they are not left behind if a kid is playing u16 in a minor league then he is way off the mark compared to guys playing senior footy tac etc . If you look at the country side and blokes like Sidebottom , Ziebell , hooper even pianto compared to a Stevens thompson rounds etc you can tell the difference in levels ability to handle pressure discipline dicision making skills under pressure etc etc.
The metro guys are different again because the junior system in the metro areas is very strong and competitive compared with some of the country leagues so the quickness the pressure and in paticular the junior coaches and training are very good so these guys tend to be more ahead of the country systems.
For instance if you live in a small town play with the local footy club and play junior footy chances are they are they are scraping for numbers the teams are made up of 11- 12 13- 14 -15 and 16 year olds so the standard is usuallt pretty ordinary by the mere fact of playing with and against kids a lot younger sure it challenges the younger kids but at the other end it hamstrings the older ones.Good older players get bad habits from cruising in games and lack of disipline
In the city most teams are individual age levels so you'll have U14 U/15 u/16,and it is competitive to get a game in these teams . With so many teams and leagues when it comes to sorting out rep players you have a very wide range of good players.
so in all this it is not so much that the country kids arent as good a talent it is just that they are so much rawer than the metro counterparts at that age. That is why you see the U/16 and U/18 country teams fall so far behind.
The tough part is how do you get these kids more exposure to higher standards of football without losing the local clubs. Some kids may be very talented but are to slight to play in the senior teams reserve teams are usually a waste of time and the junior footy is no good . I really think the answer is more regional rep games for juniors u 14 and u16 so each league junior rep teams play 3-4 times a year this only has to ba aginst neigboring leagues but often enough for the talent to get expierience at a higher level than club level.
but this is only my opinion.!! sorry for the long winded post.

Great post above re country kids development.

It is a shame the u/16 country kids are not exposed to the level of football that the metro kids are. The metro u/16 kids are lucky to get experience of playing year 12 football (while in yr 10) as well as u/18 TAC if good enough. Playing against bigger and better footballers can only make you a better player. Unfortunately there is not the depth in the country.

All local districts have their u/14, u/15 & u/16 rep teams and usually play games over the Queens Birthday weekend. Why not have these rep teams play country teams over school holidays etc. I am sure the kids would love it.
