I think people were harsh on Hartlett this week.

Seems like the expectation was that he would get 30 disposals and a goal from the HBF as though he was in the midfield. In reality he is just a defender now and if he reaches the heights of Broadbent he will be doing very well.

We just have to give up on the notion of him playing as a midfielder anymore.

NO

all we expect is that he commit 100% and apply genuine defensive pressure and when he get that ball use his kicking… its his weapon and he butchers to many kicks for a player of half his ability.

Thats why he was moved their, for when he wins the ball to use his elite kicking to hit midfielders that most players can't and drive us into attack. Not crap like that pathetic nothing half ased kick across the ground to know one against the saints.

Actually it was the right idea he just ****ed up the kick. There was a player running forward on the switch.

Thats my point, I'm not criticising his decision - my problem is him butchered the kick because of another F***ING lazy half assed attempt…. he's one of the best kicks in the AFL when he actually is trying not just coasting around taking his spot in the side for granted. If he actually tried he could be an absolute super star.

I think we should have relocated one of our home games to China instead of paying another club $600K and allowing them to market the game as their home game and wear their home strip.

We really want to come out red hot in the first quarter considering the gold coast are wearing the national colours of china, at represent australias #1 Tourist destination.

I don't think this is true, and have as such lowered my expectations of Hamish for this season.

As I said if he reaches form somewhere close to Broadbent's best I'll consider it a win. Would have preferred a first round pick, but I would also have preferred a first round pick for Lobbe. It didn't happen and I think it's best for everyone to move on and focus on 2017.

Of course everyone takes a different amount of time to move on and that's fine.

No disrespect to Broadbent, but Hartletts ceiling is so so much higher then Broadbents, if thats all he achieves this year its a massive failure from Hamish and he has let the side down. Can and should do so much better then that.

Hartlett, I think tries to come off as too cool for school, with his stupid mo, tattoos and hipster clothing. Everything about him screams arrogance, but I reckon deep down, he's actually quite insecure and gets very down on himself. Just a couple of things I've heard him say lead me to these conclusions. I reckon the best thing for him is for Kenny to back him in. He has the natural talent, he needs to get his head and his body right and just maybe he might become the player we all hoped he could be.

That a round 1 trial game is not worth getting worked up over.

It's incredible. And besides the obviously very poor 1st qtr, I thought we played quite well. Poor kicking at goal and some missed targets but I liked the structure and we got a look at some kids against a full strength St Kilda. Our disposal efficiency wasn't that far off the mark, just the clangers looked very bad

The insidious, parasitic, emotionally draining negativity on this board, starting with the game against Melbourne in 2014 and continuing until now, is a direct reflection of the entitlement of certain Port Adelaide 'supporters' in general to expect a great team when they show nothing to suggest that they deserve it. As Paul Keating said to John Hewson, a vocal minority of the supporter base of this club is a "deceitful, disgusting fraud" that only sings when we are winning...or crawls back into the woodwork like the mangy maggots that they truly are.

How exactly does a person earn the right to support a great team? Is it entitled to expect changes when our team has had dishonourable loss after dishonourable loss over the past 2 seasons?

I have very high expectations for this football club and when we start to lower those expectations is when the Port Adelaide Football Club starts to die.

I don't expect an annual flag. I do expect our team to work as hard as their opponents and to execute skills, and I do expect our coaches to implement strategies from recruitment to fitness to gameday that will see us win us football games. Everyone in the football department should currently be on notice, from the doorman to the head trainer to the captain.

The easiest thing to do in life is to focus on the failings of those we expect better from. To look, not at the things they do right, but everything that they do wrong. So that the weight of expectation from an entitled fan base actually cripples and stifles the very instinctive and creative freedom that everyone wishes the side could recapture from 2014.

We are meant to be a support, the shoulders on which our players can stand upon to reach the heights that everyone wants us to achieve. Instead, there are people who have become a millstone, intent on chaining those same players to burden of the mistakes they make trying to become better. It's not about excusing or condoning mistakes, or not pointing them out. It's about tempering that with praise of all the good things that our players do.

Westhoff gets 18 possessions and kicks a goal - nah, let's ride him into the ground for dropping a couple of easy marks.

Hartlett lays six tackles and helps our defence concede the least points to inside 50s in the JLT so far - nah, let's crucify him for shanking a kick.

Boak and Wines bust their gut in the midfield in the first hitout for the season - nah, let's say they don't care.

It's not about lowering expectations. It's about raising our belief in the players to meet them, to accept that no one at Port Adelaide deliberately sets out to fail. Criticism is fine as long as it's constructive. And really, the over the top garbage that spewed forth in the game day thread of our first preseason game is the sort of stuff I would expect to find on the Adelaide board about our team. Did we play great? Nope. But we didn't play poorly either.

The no-hopers that Fos Williams talked about weren't the players that made mistakes, but those who refused to do the work to correct it. Our club is built on the values of strength, courage, loyalty, honour and a strong sense of unity. Family. Ask yourself how many of those qualities you are bringing to the table when you take the path of least resistance and constantly behave like the ugly parent who stands on the sidelines hurling abuse at their kids whenever they make a mistake.

By all means roast the club if in R1 they capitulate against Sydney - but until that time, try to show some perspective as to what preseason is about and focus on the improvement that happened over the last three quarters of the game against St Kilda instead of the mistakes that happened in the first. I guarantee if you do that, you'll get the great team you deserve. If you don't...you'll get the fearful team you deserve.

I don't have a problem with posters who hold the team to high standards and may be relatively harsh critics, providing they also give praise where it's deserved. There are some on the board though who just go missing completely when we are travelling well, but appear from nowhere as soon as we play like rubbish for a week or two (or more :(), they are the ones they p**s me off.

I remember a Port player being asked the difference between Jack and Russell as coaches after we won the flag in 88. He replied that when you made a mistake and the runner came out under Russell you knew you would get a bake no matter what. Under Jack if you made the mistake trying to do the right thing you would be encouraged for the latter and just told to do it better next time. Too many these days think relentless criticism is some sort of cure when it is in fact the cancer.

They were chosen BECAUSE of this, not despite it.
A far easier sell to the Chinese than St. Kilda.

I think you spot on. His confidence is shot at the moment. If he turns that around he will fire and prove his critics wrong. But no easy task and will take lots of hard work
