Unpopular Port Adelaide opinion you may have

I actually think we are probably still fitter than most sides, but you don't look fitter when you're constantly turning the ball over because you've got nobody to kick to and having to chase opponents.

My concern is freshness, we look flat as a tack at the start of games and guys can't go when they need to in games, one speed and you can see them wanting to go faster but the body not going. They don't look like they are running on top of the ground, when we have guys who miss large chunks of pre-seasons they actually look faster and more agile than the ones doing it all..

Ask yourself how far the club would get if they had the attitude of "We're going to get smashed so why bother trying"...
This is pretty much how the players looked like in far too many games over the past 2 years.

We've been an utter disappointment for 2 years in a row, with a coach who has shown and stated repeatedly that his belief is that if he sticks with his plan long enough it will eventually work. I don't believe his plan will work for reasons that i've spent tens of thousands of words detailing on this board for the past 3-4 years. I've still been to every home game and more than a dozen or so away games over that time.

According to Janus, if I believe we'll lose to Sydney, Adelaide, Freo and GWS in the first 4 rounds, I don't have the right to get excited about our chances if we turn it around.

**** off. What a stupid thing to say.

PS Janus you made that 18 win, top 2 prediction on March 20th, more than 2 months after the bans were handed down and on the eve of the season. It was a bad prediction. Don't worry, you're still allowed to support the club even though you made a prediction and it didn't pan out.

At least we're getting to the heart of the matter. :)

Not believing we can win is fine if the reason is that you genuinely think those sides are better than us regardless. I think GWS and Sydney are better than us at this stage of our development so I'm expecting to lose those games...but I believe and hope we can win them.

As for Adelaide and Fremantle...pffft. If we can't beat those clowns I'll join you in the pessimistic parade because it's going to be a long season.

My unpopular opinion is that we'll probably do better than expected this year

Nah, I'm a glass half full guy so every new season gets me excited.

I am optimistic enough to think we can knock Sydney off in round 1, I am less pessimistic that we, or anyone, can beat the GWS.

Fire up all.

If we could actually ******* kick it to charlie Dixon lace out instead of bombing it non stop on top of his head, he'd probably have more influence up forward. His hands were certainty career worst last year though with us, not sure the reason why, lack of confidence maybe.

I think Dixon is the problem, not the delivery. We still laced it out to Schulz a few times last year and so far Eddy this year, amongst others. He doesn't get it. I put some of it down to him personally and the rest down to shithouse neglected forward coaching.

Is Burgess still expecting players to run a zillion kays during the week and then shrugging his shoulders when they're getting outlasted in games by a one-legged Patrick Cripps?

How's that regimen working out?

There's always the Intertoto Cup I guess.

shut your troll mouth * Byron's - TJ is our saviour ... you just don't know it yet.

* I am really not meaning to be rude
:D all good i've got my favourites too Krak Impey Amon Bonner Frampton Houston Eddy and LIENERT who I think/hope
will be something special. Except for Krak i've stuck with the newer boys coz the old guard have shown me what they've got
and it's exciting to see fresh blood. Hope springs eternal for tragics like me. Hope your right on TJ.

We are backing them in a bit but the pessimism that some have is the players own fault from their history the past 2 seasons of being absolutely inept, full team or not we have just been average. The draw we have is the reason I think Hinkley will be gone by round 8 because I think we will quickly set back into the malaise of "gotta work harder" and be treading water going nowhere again, he must have sworn the house down when the draw came out and he saw the first month.

The first round of the JLT I and others saw much of the same from the last 2 seasons, nothing that made us look like we have made any major changes to fix our huge deficiencies. Our fitness and our start to games seems to still make us flat as, something that I and several others have been on about for a couple of years, I think our players physically are burnt out and can't go when they want to and it has been like this for a couple of years, we start games running on the spot. When you see nothing out of the group to make you think differently why would you? The talk is the same talk we have heard from the same group for several seasons, it's lost any significant meaning to us fans until we see something rectified on field.

Do we want them to succeed? Yes of course we do, I'd love it to be wrong and everyone laugh at me.
Do we want Ken to succeed? Yes, we want him to and prove us all wrong
Is it OK to be happy if they come out and win lots of games? Yes of course, no one on here is going to be sad if the group comes good from round 1 and proves everyone wrong, we will all be ecstatic.

It's fair enough to have a pessimistic view with the way the last 2 years have gone but to write us off after 1 preseason game is crazy. We started slow as ****, sure. We came back and nearly won against a full strength saints side eager to sell hope and memberships. Yeah, they took Steven and Riewolt off in the 3rd but we were already dominating them on the field, and with out our best player and probably another 3 to 6 1st 22. Plus we rested Ryder and Aaron Young before Riewolt and Steven. Besides inaccuracy in front of goal and some sloppy disposal, we slaughtered them for the last 3 qtrs. How can anyone not be excited at our fwd structures from thursdsay night? How long since we took that many marks inside 50? And on the lead!! How many times did we have to rely on a 171cm fwd to contest in the air?

So many posts since thursday saying we haven't changed anything. I just think people saw the 1st quater and couldn't actually see anything for the rest of the game through their hot heads. I've re-watched the game 4 times now and I even think HH played well. He may not have had ball in hand as much as he want we d but the amount of contests in the back 1/2 he got to and affected with pressure was huge.

Everyone needs to take a deep breath. Give the team 1/2 a chance. If it's all over by rd 4 then go nuts, but at least see the positives from Thursday night instead of denying they were there.

Carn. Ken has said we have changed this year and it is because things were not working.

This I agree with but am hoping to see different this year. Fitness wasn't the problem Q1 JLT1, it was mental preperation

I don't care about the JLT result, it's how we played and setup that worries me and triggers the response from others. We again work so hard just to set up a scoring opportunity, there's no easy flow to it and our forward setups were still woeful. Then our kick outs are still nothing more than a bomb to the boundary on the defensive 50, that was just doing my head in.

But you said " with a coach who has shown and stated repeatedly that his belief is that if he sticks with his plan long enough it will eventually work".
Ken said nice sounding things in the last 2 preseasons about needing to change things up and not a lot changed. Again I'll believe it when I see it.

Please tell me what you would do differently to our fwd set-up?

I think the teal guernsey looks great, and is much better for brand recognition than the all white.

I personally hate the white Guernsey.. I've got close to 20 guernseys but never been tempted for white - teal looks heaps better and is original

I get the impression that Ken knows he is on notice, I'll back him in

Be prepared to lose one of Pittard or Trengove this off season. Not because we want to lose them, but because the offers for both will be of such a magnitude that we will only be able to afford to keep one of them. The amount of boards I've gone to where they've said that one or the other would be a 'perfect fit' for their club is very, very high.

Both will entail band one compensation.

There's always the Intertoto Cup I guess.

Player: "Burgo, i'm feeling pretty drained and sore."
Burgess: "It's all in your mind, my data and your blood results says you can train harder."

Then we go and get in that pain consultant who apparently trains people to play and train better through discomfort and fatigue. To be honest, the signs are a little obvious here.
  • Players not performing, look and feel fatigued.
  • Data says they can perform harder.
  • Get man in to train them to harden up
  • Burn them out even more.
Management purely by data is ******ed both in business and in sport. It's no wonder our mental side is so ****ed. We're always going with the "muh data" instead of actually resting someone when their body and more importantly, their mind needs it.

Not everything is ****ing space age. It pays to manage on look and feel sometimes.
