Utterly Forgotten Eagles

Reading some of those names reminded me of David Sieracowski (spelling is probably way off), we got him in that Gehrig trade and he did his knee in one of his first games for us. Big unit and I think he was very liked or something.

I also had to smile at David Haynes. I remember him as an undersized FF for us.

Yeah came into the thread to mention him.

He kicked goal of the year one time, didn't he?

i wonder if the duckworths would be the only brothers who combined for 0 H&A games (that got on a list).....

I think they were cousins.

I'll throw another name in - Tony Begovich. Only played a handful of games, but along with Watters was enough for Sydney to give us a number 1 pick

Robbie West.

dont really remember much about him but im pretty sure he had a nice perm like priddas, then crossed over to the bulldogs after struggling to break into the team...

Travis Gaspar

Barely played a game for us due to injury (26 in four seasons) but bobbed up out of nowhere to play in the 05 Preliminary Final, his first game since Round 10 the previous year. He was suspended in that game, the suspension was overturned at the tribunal, and so he also managed to play in the Grand Final.

He never played again, and was delisted at the end of 2006.

Peter Davidson
Glen Bartlett
Glenn O'Loughlin
Sean King
Paul Mifka
Kevin Caton
Richard Geary
Brad Gwilliam

Peter Davidson was derailed by ankle injuries, IIRC. Was a handy on-baller for the Tigers and then the Sharks (I think) in the WAFL. Played for WA in the classic 1986 State of Origin game against the Vics (with Chris Mainwaring on waterboy duties).

Glen Bartlett is a revered figure at East Perth (well, at least he was by me). Almost single-handedly booted the Royals out of the doldrums of the late 80s. Won the Eagles best clubman award in 1987 if the memory serves.

Glen O'Loughlin debuted for Subi in 1984 but never played much of a role with the Eagles. Played in Subi's 1986 premiership.

Sean King played one game for the Eagles. It was Round 22, 1987. We thrashed the Saints and he kicked 2 goals. Never played for the club again and may have actually been delisted at the end of 87. Later transferred to East Perth.

Paul Mifka is probably the most well-known of that list. Played nearly 300 games for the Falcons and retired towards 2000 after a couple of premierships.

Kevin Caton was a Bernie Naylor Medal winning forward for Swannies who never transferred his talents to the big league. Ended up with a few games for Fitzroy as well.

Richard Geary, if I can recall, was a Victorian recruit who never did much for the Eagles. Had his best year in the WAFL in 1989 where he may have been South Fremantle's leading goalkicker (including at least one bag of 8). Kicked 1.2 in the Bulldog's losing 1989 GF effort.

Brad Gwilliam I remember from West Perth, but mostly sticks in my memory for the injury he suffered after being transferred to Richmond. Crashed into the goalpost at the MCG and did BOTH his knees at the same time.

Mark Williams:

Recruited from VFA club Sandhurst, Williams never ventured to the west for any longer than a one week familiarisation trip. Not surprisingly he was de-listed at the end of the 1991 season, but the talented midfielder played with success for Eaglehawk in the Bendigo league, winning his club’s fairest and best award in 1992.
I read somewhere (might have been Mainy's autobiography, or Jako's) that while on that one week familiarisation trip, the players were asked what were the best and worst things that had ever happened to them (standard team-building rubbish). When he was asked to describe the worst thing to ever happen to him, Williams response was - "Being drafted by the Eagles"

Tim Watson

We drafted him on a whim and he was never going to play for us. Watson did, however, come over to WA to take part in a training session... something which I always admired.

Doesn't seem like much, but even though he knew he'd never lace up the boots for us, he took the time to come over here.

Tony Evans (everyone just seems to have forgotten how good he was)
Michael O'Connell (HBF & brother to David)
David O'Connell (number one ruckman for short while)
Peter Higgins (carried our ruck for a short while when everyone else was out)
Peter Melesso (CHB for a short while)
Matt Clape (went to Carlton to get more game time)
Dean Laidley (went to North Melbourne for more game time)
Jason Spinks (went Geelong to get more game time)
Richard Tayor (Ken Judge recruit who had a dust up with Phillip Matera at training)
Robbie West (went to Bulldogs in an attempt to get more game time)

A few other names on the tip of my tongue that were 'memorable' for various reasons.

Trent Nicholls (recruited from Richmond to fill a hole - didn't last long)

Another name that escapes me at the moment is the guy who apparently told Mick Malthouse what was going wrong during 3/4 (?) time and was never seen again after that.

Paul Mifka is probably the most well-known of that list. Played nearly 300 games for the Falcons and retired towards 2000 after a couple of premierships.

He also smacked out Jason Heatley before the opening siren of the 1995 grand final!!

Needless to say I was going ape shit in celebration on the wing.

Laurie Belotti

Wasn't he the rookie of the year in 1999?

I associate him as the future of 'Ochre'.

Edit:

Jaxon Crabb

Taken at pick 12 in the '97 "Horror Draft", where Rowan Jones stood out like a beacon amongst the plethora of hacks the club selected that year.

I used to watch him in school footy (he was a few years ahead of me), and couldn't believe he was the 12th best kid in the country.

Toby McGrath , bloody hell played NAB cup game as a rookie ( I yr )

If only we had stuck with Toby great character , Sandover Medallist / State captain . Toby in hindsight should have been kept but in 2004 / 5 we had a pretty good team :footy:

For some reason - my memories of him are night games at the WACA

Surprised there aren't a few more "WACA specialists".

Mark Hepburn
Clinton Browning
Dean Irving
Phil Scott

The Lockett specialist - Andrew Lockyer

"Eagle for a day", the name we used to give a teacher at Leeming high school. Just can't remember his name. Was a good east freo player I think.

David Antonowitz.

I don't remember much about him but i think he might have played a couple of games early 2000s.

I think he was a poor mans andrew mcdougall (that's saying something)

Haha was eagles for a day shane ellis? Used to be my footy coach back in auskick. Nice guy, think he played a bit for the bombers as well.

sheesh i remember donnelly, i thought he could take a grab this bloke and was going to be our next mitchell white..

i remember brayden lyle and schofield too, thought we were nuts to offload them to port! wasnt a bad move in the end :)

Cory Young.

Played an OK first quarter (against Essendon at Windy Hill?) and kicked a goal. Then went on to tell Malthouse to get stuffed at the quarter time huddle so he was benched and didn't get back onto the ground.

Then at the clubrooms Monday morning found a note in his locker saying he was no longer needed and his WAFL club trains on Tuesday and Thursday nights starting at 5pm.

Paul Johnston who was a reasonably early draft pick

Remmember his debut where he looked promising but the club identified his limited talent at AFL level and wisely shipped of to Melbourne.

Not sure but i think we aquired Rosa from that deal
