Probably the greatest one day matches there has ever been or will ever be.
Those matches and the second season of World Series Cricket in Sydney where they closed the gates are most memorable moments in one day cricket in my lifetime. You are a lucky sod if you went to those ones in England in that time.
The final was a non-event. Result great for Australia but wasn’t a great match.

It was once Pakistan was bowled out and Aussie off to a decent start, but that was just the icing on the cake. To even be able to get to the final was epic.
It was like unstoppable flow of energy by that stage. The two South Africans matches were incredible.
We should not have even made the semi-final but some amazing players refused to accept and one of them was certainly Warney. To be up late to see it was amazing time as a cricket fan.

Simply shocking news. I feel so bad for his kids. Far to young and had plenty of quality of life ahead

Yep.

But on a positive note, he looked like a Dad that did a lot for his kids, looked like he managed a lot of special trips with them especially once they had finished school.

Not many fathers get that chance and I’m sure his kids will appreciate it in time.

Honestly, I don't feel very shocked at all given Shane lived his life to the absolute fullest, but it doesn't lessen the loss at all. One of the greatest ever, renaming the Great Southern Stand, and it guaranteed it will retain the name no matter what rebuild happens, is the perfect tribute.

I still remember being at the match where John Safran drove the remote control seagull with the smoke in its beak up to Warnie in the field. Only Shane could be responsible for two clear memories like the ball of the century and something so utterly ridiculous as the smoking seagull.

A fitting tribute to the man that changed leg spin bowling forever. The best spinner world cricket ever and possibly Australia's great ever bowler.
VALE the "sheik of tweak".

He did. Always in the headlines. A true Aussie larrikan and cricket legend. I was shocked when I read the news this morning.

A tiny bit bigger than his stand in Hampshire.

Agreed. A fitting tribute.

World Cup win over South Africa in England for me, all hope was lost til Warney showed up with his superman cape on for a magical 10 overs. He put the team on his back and carried them to victory

GOAT ODI spell.

happened to be awake when the news started filtering through, thought it was one of those death hoaxes. not to be.

mostly shock. reading the tributes and how english cricket fans have become a blubbering mess, and the effect it's had on even folk over there who barely even follow cricket or prefer soccer, gets to me a bit. at work at the moment and reading up is interfering a bit.

Twelve hours later, and I’m still asking the same question. WTF?

Can’t remember who said it (probably on Twitter), but losing a childhood hero and then a contemporary hero in the space of 24 hours is a one-two punch that has hit many people, myself included.

The solace I’m taking though is that, off the back of a two year period which has shaken and divided society (and continues to do so), our common outpouring of grief is a bittersweet balm that seems to be reuniting us. Shane’s final gift to us.

I’m gonna hug the sh*t out of the next Eagles fan I see.
