Carlton defender Tom Williamson has taken an indefinite leave of absence from the club.

The Blues said they have been supporting Williamson “over several months” with “a number of personal issues”.

The 23-year-old has not played at AFL level this year, though he was the unused medical sub in Round 1.

“It has been agreed by all parties that it would be best that Williamson takes extended time away from the football club, to focus on his wellbeing and ultimately address his personal issues,” the club said in a statement.

“The wellbeing and the health and safety of all remains the club’s priority and due to the sensitive nature of this matter, the club is not in a position to provide any further comment at this stage.”

Williamson played 26 games over the last two seasons, with his career total sitting at 44.

On a personal side note, I think he was a very good/promising player. Hopefully he can feel comfortable at VFL level and rediscover his passion.

Thanks mate. A bit of googling suggests he's a handy player type - long-kicking running HB? Never watched him though.

Quick and did well on AFL draft agility testing. From memory, accumulation was an issue and being a tweener height makes it difficult. Played a bit of wing and defence, mostly the latter. A neater version of Goater that isn't quite as quick (still quick) or as versatile pre-draft as our boy, but still plenty there to work with. As I said, I like him as a tall winger if we play him there.

His VFL stats are pretty good for a youngster.

The backline looks solid.
Interesting that Turner is playing.
Still no TT.
Edwards getting a chance to develop as the first ruck.
Goater hopefully plays as lined up on the wing.
Williamson a nice addition to the team with his run & AFL experience.
Maybe a trial to pick him up as a delisted free agent at the end of the year.

Not quite sure how this happens from a logistical perspective as he’d still be a listed Carlton player.

Presume there’s the ability to cross over on a permit with agreement of all parties.

When he has had an extended crack at it he looks pretty good. Courageous, half back/wing with a really nice left peg. Over the last few years his body has continually let him down there.

Retired I think.

Watching the clips I was expecting a dashing type but he reminded me more of a less contested Luke McDonald more than an Adam Saad.
